About this ebook

What is the true meaning of friendship? Follow along as a boy meets up with his friend—a dog who faithfully waits for him every day so they can ride out to the beach together to surf. The boy doesn't own the dog and he doesn't know who does, but their daily routine has created a special bond. Award-winning author Eric Walters navigates the waters of a unique friendship alongside the vibrant illustrations of Eugenie Fernandes, who brings the bumpy roads, rugged beach paths and rolling waves of the tropics to life.

Sometimes the most poignant relationships in a child's life are the ones between friends.

This is a beautifully illustrated and written story about the friendship and love between a boy and a dog. This is not just any dog, but one who loves to surf. Everyday, the dog waits for the boy to come home from school. Once he is changed, off they go on the scooter over bumpy roads and trails until they get to the beach. They go out together several times, the boy holding the dog on when necessary, then he goes by himself. They are just "boy" to each other, because they do not own one another, they are just friends. Once mother decides to feed the dog, the boy, Sammy, tells him his name and gives the dog a name. The illustrations are vibrant and lush. I almost felt like I was in the jungle with them. At now time are we told where the story takes place, but the dedication is to his daughter who brought him to Costa Rica, so that is my guess for the setting. This is a cute story about friendship. If you love dogs, then this is the book for you. This would also be a nice read aloud in a primary/early junior classroom. The publisher generously provided a copy of this book via Netgalley.

Rather odd and old-fashioned looking story of a boy and a dog (who don't own each other, as the author points out) who share a love of surfing. Nicely illustrated. Not a lot of complex lessons to be learned here--friendship is good and surfing is good.
