1 Treatment strategy
The therapy of diverticulitis begins with a fasting period. To alleviate the complaints, fibre-rich diet has proved successful.
Especially fibre from cereals is recommended. It is for example contained in whole-grain bread, bran and blending’s of muesli. As to most of the premade blending’s of muesli sugar is added, it is recommended to prepare the muesli oneself.
Also nuts and almonds fit well in the diet.
----- Especially healthy for you are potatoes, fruits, salad and vegetables, especially legumes (peas, beans), as they contain a lot of fibre. If you have been eating little whole-grain products so far, your intestines must get used to the change of nutrition.
During the transition period - it takes about a week - a slight abdominal pain and bloating may occur.
Furthermore you should drink as much as possible, at least 2 litres a day! This additionally supports your digestion.
------- Milk- and fruit acid (contained in yogurt or apples) promote intestinal activity.
Also physical exercise is recommended to stimulate the digestion.
A problem concerning the diet could be indigestible grains and pips as linseed, raspberry seeds etc., because they can be hardly chewed and then they can become entangled in the diverticula and so can trigger infections.
2 Avoid
Avoid white flour products, sugar and a bigger amount of meat, sausage, cheese and fish. These foods are not appropriate for you, because they contain only little fibre.
Avoid grains.
Do you easily tend to constipation? Then additionally you should avoid all kinds of food, which have a constipating effect. These are for example string black tea, red wine, cacao as well as cacao containing foods.
