Who am I and why should you listen to me?

My name is Iskra Evtimova and I am from those people who adore traveling, meeting new people and meeting new challenges. I have over 6 years experience in website development and have worked for the US and Australia and I used to manage a team of 25 people, specializing in programming, web design, marketing and SEO (you will find a more descriptive definition of what exactly SEO means in the following chapters). Even though I loved my work and my team, a moment came when I didn’t feel satisfied and pleased with what I was doing. I wanted to do something more meaningful and to be helpful to more people. This is how I decided to quit my job and write this book with practical tips, which I have collected over the years, so I to be able to help motivated and decisive people like you to show the world what they are capable of.

A research done by shows that there were over 3 billion people connected and using the Internet as of 2016 and in 2020 this number will be over 5 billion. Imagine the things you can achieve if you can get through to a little portion of these people the right way. Imagine the products or services you’re supplying to be reachable by millions of potential customers.

Chapter 1

How to do an initial research

FIRSTLY, LET ME CONGRATULATE you on making the decision to create your own website and to show what you can do to more people. It takes a lot of courage, ambition and consistency, so BRAVO!


LET’S START WITH THE first step - research. I would like to point out that this step is really important because everything you do later in the process will be determined by it. The company I worked for was a cleaning services supplier. We had to create a website for a cleaning service required after you decide to leave the apartment you rented, for Brisbane, Australia. We had already done such websites for the same service in Sydney and Melbourne, but in these cities people used the phrase End of Lease Cleaning when searching for this type of service in Google. We were pretty sure it will be the same for Brisbane, however, it turned out that people used Bond cleaning for the absolutely same service.

If we hadn’t done our research then and found out the difference, we would have bought the wrong domain (name of the website) and we would’ve optimized the website with the wrong keyword, which would have led us to way less visits, therefore - way less profit.

Of course, these things could be corrected later on, but I believe you wouldn’t want to waste time and money fixing mistakes. You better invest in a good research in the beginning. There are different ways to understand what people are looking for on the Internet and how to create your website the way you can be visible for a bigger audience and I will show you how exactly you can do it.

There are two types of search people can do - local and global. Searches for cleaning services, shoe cobbler, plumber and everything that can be arranged locally, goes to the local type. I highly doubt that a person living in South Dakota would look for a plumber in Texas. Usually, when searching for a local service or product, users put their location at the end of the phrase: cleaning services New York, shoe cobbler Boston, plumber in London".

The second type is the global search. It includes searches such as healthy diet, weight loss exercises, Canon camera review, digital marketing, etc. These are keyword searches which are not defined by location. In this case, search engines are showing as results websites from all over the world, ranking them using over 200 criteria.

You will see the word SEO quite often in this book so let me explain what it means. SEO = Search Engine Optimization or optimization of the website the way it will be shown in first positions in searches done in Google, Yandex, Bing, Baidu and more. I will show you how this magic works later on - be patient :)

A 2015 research shows 70% of the people are using Google so we will be focusing on it. Take a look at this Matt Cutts video which explains how Google works.

Let’s check the anatomy of a Google search. The user types in a search query (keyword) and results are generated below. The results are different types and not always all of the possible ones are shown. There could be paid advertising, organic results, local results with a map, videos, news, knowledge graphs, etc.

Organic results are the ones which in time are naturally getting higher positions in the search results. Of course, we can affect the results and later on I will show you how. The entire page with the results is called SERP - Search Engine Results Page. Take a look at the picture below and see how a SERP looks like.

YOU CAN RECOGNIZE THE paid ads by the green sign Ad in the beginning of the result. Have in mind Google often performs tests on how exactly the sign will look like, so it is possible to stumble upon different ad signs.

TO START THE RESEARCH, grab a pen and paper and write around 10 different keywords and phrases, which you think best describe your market niche and your website. Probably these won’t be the final 10 you end up with, but it is the start. Be prepared to change them. If you can’t think of 10, write down whatever you have. Little by little we’ll compose a list of the best words that fit your purpose together.

Now that we have several keywords (You wrote them down, right?) we can start with the research. First, we will take a look at the Google AdWords’ Keyword Planner.

What is Google AdWords? This is a Google’s platform for paid advertising, which I showed you earlier. We are not going with paid ads straight away, but we’ll use the tool to try and find out what people are looking for and how they look for it. To use the Keyword Planner you need to register in here To do so click the Sign In button. After you enter your email address and password a new Welcome to Google AdWords page will load. You will see a link saying "skip the guided setup" right under the title. Click on it otherwise Google will lead you straight to create a paid ads campaign and will ask for your card details for payment and we are not giving them yet. After that you need to enter your details on the new page and you should be here:

After you’ve registered successfully, choose from the menu Tools and click on the Keyword planner from the dropdown menu. You should be seeing this:

THE TWO OPTIONS WE will be using here are: Search for new keywords using a phrase, website or category and Get Search volume data and trends.

Let’s start with the second - Get Search volume data and trends.
