About this ebook
A world within a world - a world within our world.
Raven is a beautiful witch – heir of the Tenebris magic and holder of the Shadow Stone. She lives in Hollow Grove among other powerful witches. She has the kind of power that could eventually turn her into a High Priestess. For now, though, Raven is a reckless and naïve witch. Being new to having real magic is exciting for her, and that is why she wants to try to create her own stone. She wants to make a legacy, like her ancestors before her.
Raven tries her magic to create an Idle Stone. Although it did not turn out to be idle – it actually did not turn out to be anything Raven was expecting at all. Rather, her stone is so powerful that it has gone out of her control. Thus, she plans to get rid of it by taking it to the Colony before it can create more trouble than good. Will Raven be successful in getting rid of the Idle Stone? Or will it cause bigger problems than she can handle?

Chapter 1 - Raven
Having my power back made me feel like a real witch again. It had been so long that I’d only been toeing the water, that my magic had been a side effect rather than the real deal. Now I was submerged in magic. The Shadow Stone had reinstated the Tenebris magic and with it safely in my possession I was one of the strongest witches in the coven now.
Of course, never as strong as Chandra was. The High Priestess always had extra magic. You had to be strong as hell to be on in the first place but with the title came a healthy dose of special magic that regular witches could only dream about. Of course, I was sure I had what it took to be able to be a High Priestess now that I had my Shadow Stone and it wasn’t a curse to be a Tenebris anymore. That wouldn’t happen for a while still, though. Chandra was powerful and good as our leader, even though her morals were non-existent.
She wasn’t even at the coven now. She often traveled for business, meeting with witches from other counties or taking care of those that wanted to eradicate us, but this time it wasn’t business. She was trying to save her own skin. The whole county was pissed at her. Chandra had gotten the help of a witch from another county, Avalon, to help her get rid of Balfour. I didn’t like werewolves – they were supposed to be our nemesis – but since he’d stepped into office the world had been a better place for the magic wielders.
I had nothing against the guy and Chandra’s assassination attempt had been an act of jealousy, anyway. Sure, I hated werewolves. They’d killed my parents. But I liked Balfour and the Rebels – I was one of them – had struck up a kind of truce.
She was a bitch. I’d never liked her. A lot of the witches in the Grove felt that way about her. Of course, we would never say it out loud and we would serve her for as long as she was our leader. It was the way we did it. We weren’t traitors and no one wanted to face her wrath.
I did prefer her being away, though.
It had been months. She really was hiding until the anger from the rest of the preternatural community died down.
While she was gone, life carried on. She had minions high enough in power to keep us in check but they left us alone. I’d started practicing my magic. I knew I was capable of much more than I’d managed to unlock so far and I wanted to explore. My great, great Grandfather had created the Shadow Stone. He’d had the magic. I had it now, too. The Tenebris Curse he’d put on the stone that took all my power away when the stone had been lost was lifted now that I had it back and I wanted to create a stone, too.
I was sure I could do it. I wanted to leave something behind as my own legacy. Right now, I had nothing and no one to leave it to. I had no children and judging by the way things were going for me, that wasn’t going to change any time soon. Still, I wanted something to be able to pass on. Something I could call a success of my own.
Miath and I were seeing each other on and off. I liked the guy. He was Fae, which was against the witch grain a little because we didn’t mix with other magic as a rule, but he was in control of his magic in a way that made me shiver. He was so strong it was almost a sin for a species as placid as the Fae to have something like that in their possession.
I didn’t know if I wanted to commit to him, though. My magic and his magic together made a concoction that scared me. And it was hard for me to be emotionally attached to someone when the only people I’d really cared about had died a long time ago, and everyone else had shunned me most of my life. It wasn’t something I was exactly used to.
Either way, Miath wasn’t pressing for more, even though I knew he wanted it. We’d gotten off to a rocky start – lying to him about who I was didn’t create a great foundation for a relationship when we’d just met – and he seemed to be content for now with what we had. I knew he wanted more, but for whatever reason he was willing to not go as serious or as fast as it could have been between us.
I walked to my bookshelf and ran my hands over the spines of the books that had been passed down through the generations of my family. Leather bound books whispered their contents to me when they were full of magic. Novels of times long gone held my heart with precious sentiment. My fingers landed on a book that was so quiet compared to the other books of magic it struck me every time.
It was like this book had so much to say there just wasn’t space for it all.
This book was hundreds of years old. It was written by the first Tenebris and everyone in my bloodline had added to it as more magic had appeared. The technologies that were invented in the last decades brought a whole new dimension to magic. Every time something new was discovered or invented, new magic came with it. My family had been noting down magic and spells whenever that happened.
I was the only one that hadn’t been keeping up with the tradition. I hadn’t been able to handle my magic the way my ancestors had without the stone and I hadn’t found any new spells. Until I’d found the stone again I was a bad excuse for a witch. Now that I had it, I’d started filling in the blank pages at the back of the book. There were always new pages to be had; the book never filled all the way. Every time I used one, a new blank page appeared at the back of the book for the next spell to take its place.
Today, I wasn’t going to the book to add information. I paged through the first chapter of the book, explaining the concept of magic. It was here, at the very end of the first chapter, that my future lay. It explained how to create stones. I wanted in. I wanted to create a stone of my own, and this book was going to tell me how.
Witch magic was nothing like they show in some movies. We don’t have big pots with boiling water where we add rats’ eyes and lizard guts and spit and dust. It was disgusting and a mockery of what magic really was. Instead, witches created spells and places magic in and on objects by giving their own magic. It was like charging something. We shoved our own magic into something, let whatever object we were enchanting drink of our own essence. We had to access the right magic within ourselves to be able to do it, but that kind of magic was so much more powerful than any other kind. It held up under the worst circumstances.
The book explained
