Author

Virginia Nelson

Virginia Nelson likes knights in rusted and dinged up armor, heroes that snarl instead of croon, and heroines who can't remember to say the right thing even with an author writing their dialogue. Her books are full of snark, sex, and random acts of ineptitude--not always in that order.

Fiona recognized the voice carrying over the mists. The sound was elusive as cricket song, yet eerie and unnatural as it called her name. He’d called her for a thousand years, or at least so it seemed. But just because he called, didn’t mean she planned to answer. Her feet pounded the earth, each step a jagged stab of pain for she’d worn her heels bloody the day before as she’d climbed a mountain to escape him. She couldn’t give into the pain, or the temptation of his call, because if she did, everything would be lost.

Something hit her side and she tumbled and rolled, arms flailing to try to stop her momentum, even as she knew it would be futile. He’d capture her, he always did, and the light of her people…

Wait—that was it. She could call the light of her people, something she hadn’t been able to do before. In this time, in this place, she wasn’t helpless to his voice—she was a queen.

Even as their rolling came to a stop, even as he rose above her, sure of his rights and triumph, she called down the lines that connected her to her people and demanded the power of the triads to join her in this battle. When his fingers closed around her neck as she’d known they would, her hands came up to capture his wrists.

The darkness won’t win this time, damn you. Gathering all the energy she could summon into her palms, she shoved it into him and reveled in the way the beast’s form twisted as he bellowed out his rage. I call upon the power of three times three and damn you to a thousand hells before I give over the light and throne of the Seers.

Inky black gushed out of the creature’s horrible mouth, flowing over her hands and turning to razorblades of ice that cut her. Her blood mixed with his, spilling to the ground around her, and she knew she’d likely die in her attempt to thwart his usurping of her throne.

Gritting her teeth past the pain and tightening her hands, she dug her nails into his wrists even as he choked her, even as her heart’s blood spilled to the earth, even as she knew she wouldn’t survive their battle. It didn’t matter. If she managed to take him with her, it would be worth the sacrifice of one queen to protect all of her people from the likes of him.

She blinked past tears of pain and fear and saw his face still twisting and changing above her. The sunset haloed his profile, bringing it into stark focus as the monster transformed into something even more familiar. The image blurred as more tears flooded her eyes. Not that face. Out of all the masks the beast chose to wear, she hated him most for choosing that face.

It doesn’t have to end like this, Fiona. Stop dreaming in fear and consider the possibilities. In the magical way of dreams, the scene
