Prologue
The sun pierced through the window to reach Nora as she laid in bed early Saturday morning. She rolled onto her side and squinted with one eye to see her husband, James, still asleep. The couple's plush purple blanket was pulled down to his waist and revealed his white tank top stretching across his deep brown skin and muscular physique.
Nora smiled in adoration at her husband. Then she slowly sat up, slipped into her fluffy pink slippers and reached for her white silk robe draped across a chair. Her copper brown skin glistened from the cocoa and shea butter massage James gave her the night before.
She walked across the white carpet floor to the bedroom window and tied her robe. Then she peeked through the white curtains into the backyard to see Wuff, the family's pet Corgi, staring at her from inside his quaint dog house. The bowls of water and dog food next to him appeared full.
Nora closed the curtain and turned around for the bedroom door. Saturday's like these were Nora's favorites because they allowed her to be with her family instead of at the hospital in Columbia, Maryland where she worked as a physician in the pulmonary department. Although she undoubtedly cared for her patients, she knew her family needed her, and she needed them, too. Since she received only one Saturday at home each month, she planned to make the best of it.
She stealthily opened the door, crept into the hallway and gently closed the door behind her. Then she tiptoed down the hallway to check on Joe, she and James' 10-year-old son.
When Nora opened the door to Joe's room, she saw he was still asleep. Posters of football players decorated his wall, while science books filled his shelves.
Next, she checked on Martha and Joy, the couple's 7-year-old twins. They shared a room with nearly double of everything: two matching beds, desks, and matching sets of the same clothes. On this morning, each girl appeared sound asleep, as well.
Well, then,
Nora whispered to herself as she closed the door and turned to walk toward the kitchen. Let's get this breakfast started.
She entered the kitchen and put on her floral apron. Then she pulled ingredients from the cabinets and refrigerator and placed them on the countertop. She decided she had everything she needed.
❖
Nora and James had been together as a couple since they were 16 and 18, respectively. Before then, Nora's older brother, Mike, and James had been childhood best friends. James came over to the house on several occasions throughout the years, usually to watch sports or play video games.
Most of the time, when James visited, Nora was huddled away in her room reading science books or magazines, so she had little interaction with James.
That changed one snowy evening when James came over to the house to watch a football playoff game. Nora's parents were away at a dinner party. They left Mike in charge because he was very responsible.
That night, while Mike and James began to watch the game in the living room, Nora walked to the kitchen to get
