Self-Discipline - Ryan James
Part 1:
A Closer Look at Self-Discipline
Contrary to popular belief, self-discipline is not about limiting yourself. It’s about having the capability to act according to what you know you should (which is in line with your goals in life) instead of letting your feelings dictate your actions. It is about self-mastery.
When the average person thinks of self-discipline, he usually conjures up images of a scary drill sergeant giving you hell for not polishing your boots enough or not standing straight enough. That’s not self-discipline.
The One Thing You Need To Know Before Getting Started
But self-discipline is not just about complying with rules
. It is a lifetime commitment to staying in line with what you want in life. It entails fighting that desire for instant gratification. It entails maintaining your motivation. It’s about being in there for the long haul.
The key word here is commitment.
You need to know that it’s not something you suddenly get and then you’re set for life.
But don’t worry though because self-discipline can be learned.
Self-discipline is not innate. Think about it: a toddler does not have self-control. When he wants to do or get something, he is motivated to do it or go after it. A small child initially has no regard for the consequences of his actions. But as he grows older and is trained by his parents, influenced by his environment, starts to desire the positive reactions from the people around him, he will learn about cause and effect, restrictions, rules, and authority. Hopefully, he will learn to apply self-discipline to his choices and
