But then, I have met people who either tried the ketogenic diet or wanted to but could not go through with it because of the different time constraints they find themselves in, this therefore is the reason why I decided to write a book about a simple yet effective, time saving method of enjoying fat burning ketogenic recipes without slaving away your time in the kitchen.
In this cookbook, I have combined the medically recommended ketogenic diet with the ease of using the crock pot at creating tasty and tender meals. Now you do not have to worry about spending too much time in the kitchen preparing your favorite ketogenic recipes.

A Brief History
I would love us to start with a little brief history about the ketogenic diet, so that we can get an overview of the events that lead to the discovery of this diet. The ketogenic diet was initially introduced as an alternative to fasting in the treatment and control of epilepsy seizures in children in the early 1920s, this was of course before the further discovery of the other numerous benefits such as weight loss, appetite control, regularization of blood sugar level and many others.
Hugh Conklin a student of Bernarr Macfadden, an American, introduced fasting to his patients as a treatment method for controlling epilepsy. Conklin put forward the theory that epileptic seizures were as a result of a toxin produced in the intestine. He suggested that fasting for 15 to 25 days could make this toxin to fritter away. This according to endocrinologist Rollin Woodyatt is because when you fast, three different water-soluble compounds (acetone, ß-hydroxybutyrate and acetoacetate) are produced by the liver which help in fighting this toxin that is responsible for the epileptic seizures.
Rollin Woodyatt also noted that this water-soluble compounds, which are collectively known as the ketone bodies can be produced when an individual follows a diet that is high in fat, low in carbohydrates with a moderate amount of protein. Hence the ketogenic diet was discovered as an alternative to fasting.
However, due to the establishment of new anticonvulsant therapies, the ketogenic diet was eventually abandoned. Although the anticonvulsant therapies proved effective in the control of epilepsies, it still failed to achieve full control in about 30% of epileptic patients. For this group of people and majorly children, the ketogenic diet was reintroduced as a means of managing epileptic seizures.
CHAPTER 1: The Ketogenic Diet Primer
What is the ketogneic diet?
A ketogenic diet is a diet that is low in carbohydrate, high in fat with a moderate quantity of proteinous foods, usually round 5% of carbohydrate 75% of fats and 20% of proteins.
This diet helps to turning the body into a fat burning machine, using fat as a source of energy instead of the conventional method of using glucose produced from carbohydrates as a form of energy.
What is ketosis?
On a regular instance, an individual consumes more of carbohydrate out of the macronutrients (the daily intake of fat, protein and carbohydrate) then these carbohydrates are then converted into glucose which is then transported around the body with the aid of insulin as the primary source of energy. Insulin which is responsible for the transportation of glucose (which is a form of energy derived from the breakdown of carbohydrates) blocks the transfer of fats to the liver, therefore leading to a high level of fats storage in the body system.
But once the body becomes short on the supply of carbohydrate and an increase in the intake of fat occurs, the body enters a self-survival mode where it changes its primary source of energy from the carbohydrate which it has being used to, to the nearest available option of fats. The reason this works is because when there is shortage of carbohydrate, there will be no production of glucose hence the level of insulin reduces which in turn allows the transportation of the consumed fats to get to the liver and be processed as a form of energy.
Once these fats get into the liver, they are being converted into three different water-soluble compounds (acetone, ß-hydroxybutyrate and acetoacetate) which are collectively known as the ketone bodies, this ketone bodies are then transported around the body as the new source of energy.
This process in which the body replaces glucose with ketones as its primary source of energy is what is known as ketosis or state of ketosis.
Benefits of ketogenic diet
Epilepsy Control: The ketogenic diet has been used since the early 1990s in the control of epilepsy in children and some adults. Hugh Conklin proposed that epilepsy seizures are mostly caused by a toxin produced in the intestine and research has shown that the ketone bodies (acetone, ß-hydroxybutyrate and acetoacetate) produced in the liver, are capable of fighting this toxin which can only be achieved by following a ketogenic diet or fasting, thereby reducing the rate of epilepsy
