Acknowledgments

Were you on that list of acknowledgments in the first Coffee with Jesus book? Then consider yourself thanked again. But special shout-outs to the following:

Joy, for her late-night slogging and help in laying out many of these strips; Al at IVP, for taking over where Dave (Clark Kent) Zimmerman left off; Laura at IVP, for helping to smooth the process with her super-organized, super-sized, much-improved-on-the-original templates; Katie, for not settling when the comics didn’t make her laugh or think, sending me back to the drawing board.

And I suppose I owe not a small bit of thanks to the intrusive, time-wasting, worldwide distraction that is Facebook. Most of you holding this book would not be doing so were it not for the help of Mark Zuckerberg and his army of evil geniuses bent on world domination.

Introduction

If there’s one thing I’ve learned from reading the online comments on Coffee with Jesus comic strips (other than it’s not a good idea to read online comments), it’s that there are a lot of interpretations of who Jesus is. We tend to create him in our own image. To some, he’s just sunshine and peace and rainbows and puppies, and he would never say the things he says in these strips. To some, he’s a great philosopher who deserves respect. To others, he’s an insecure and angry deity who will surely make me pay in some horrible manner for the way in which I’ve depicted him here. To many, he’s just a made-up story created by power-mad people to keep you in line. I hope it’s clear in these comics who he is to me. Imitators have spawned online, creating what I consider rude and inaccurate portrayals of Jesus. If you’ve come across any of those, I hope it was easy to discern that they did not come from me.

The theology in these strips is fairly orthodox, though I might put a twist on what many consider orthodoxy.

Jesus is practical, down-to-earth and real, but he’s also the miracle-working Son of God. He’s a whisper away, but he doesn’t always whisper. He’s got an opinion and he’s not afraid to
