About this ebook

The first rule of an undercover cop: Never fall in love with the suspect!

National Readers Choice Award Finalist

Kurt MacKinnon is determined to catch his partner's killer. He doesn't count on his incredible chemistry with one of the suspects...or the feelings she ignites that are dangerously real.

Jockeys and Jewels is a sparkling jewel of a romance--clever, entertaining, and touching." --Julianne MacLean, USA Today Bestselling Author"

Hardened cop Kurt has no intention of returning to undercover work. But when his former partner is murdered, he rushes to the backwater track where his friend was last seen alive. He intends to make someone pay, even if the killer turns out to be a talented rider with a smoking hot body and a disarming smile.

Down-on-her luck jockey Julie is chasing a big win, struggling to climb the rider ranks. She jumps at the chance to work for Kurt, never suspecting she's already a person of interest--and it's not because of her riding skills.

Kurt never expected his spirited colt to flourish under Julie's deft touch or for his own cynical heart to soften. But when his investigation tightens around the truth, will he be able to protect the woman he's falling for?

This was a very good romantic suspense novel that kept you reading. I look forward to reading other books by this author.

Racehorse trainer Kurt MacKinnon resents being yanked back into undercover police work. But when his ex-partner is brutally murdered, he moves his third-string horses to a dirt road track, determined to hunt down the killer.

Struggling apprentice jockey Julie West pins her dreams of a vital win on the charismatic trainer, never suspecting she's a person of interest-and not because of her riding ability.
Kurt didn't expect his temperamental colt to blossom under Julie's deft touch nor for his own rusty heart to soften. However, his deception draws them both into the cross-hairs of a killer...and now much more than their love is in danger.

This novel was absolutely amazing! It had the perfect blend of mystery and romance, but, most importantly, the characters felt real. I found it engaging from the start and I couldn't help but sympathize with both Kurt and Julie. I'm not familiar with the complexities of horse racing, but I wasn't bored by all the details pertaining to training and jockeying. Plus, it's always nice to read such a great book from a Canadian author! Definitely a must read!

In the genre of Dick Francis, Bev Pettersen's Jockeys and Jewels will take you for a ride around the backside of horse racing. The characters are full of both warts and beauty marks, much like human nature. The personality blend is an interesting mix, neither typecast good nor bad, and brings life to the story. In addition to the mystery/romance field of interest, this may be a good mid level read if you are a new fan to racing or have a casual relationship with it. The book is not overly weighted with information on the horse racing world. For those more interested in depth of the racing world, the focus may be a bit less than expected. It would make a fine summer read and enjoyable experience for the horse lover.

I was kept in the story. Good see the races and horses.Kurt is a horse trainer and his horse is about to race when he gets a call. He looks at who's calling and finds his old boss Archer from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. He quit 11 months ago to be a full time horse trainer. He was tired of going undercover all the time.Archer said,"They needed him on this case as a horse trainer and not to take his good horses. His old partner Connor had been murdered. He had stopped to help a horse trailer and after followed him to the track. He talked to a jockey named Julie West. The trailer belonged to Otto Laing."So Kurt left his good horses and took a new horse to teach the gate too. and a Horse that looked good but had lost all of his races so far. Also took Cisco his work horse. He is across the barn with his horses to Otto's horse but he cant see that horse because its blocked off so no one can bother it. Otto horse hates him.Kurt offers Julie to ride his horse in the mornings and see how well she does at her first race before deciding who will be jockey for the race.Kurt fits in because he is a real trainer and no one knows he is a cop.It shows the world of racing. How hard undercover can be with all the lying.I enjoyed reading Jockeys and Jewels and look forward to reading more books from Bev. I was given this ebook in exchange for honest review.

Unfortunately the title of the book gives away any of the mystery behind the plot itself, leaving "how does it happen" as the only question to be answered regarding the crime that is being done, but surprisingly, that big give away didn't detract from the enjoyment of reading.I highly recommend this book for lovers of racing and for casual fans. I also expect that newcomers who are curious about the track might enjoy the insight as to what happens behind the scenes. Reading this book renewed my respect for those who do what they do before and after the races, even though I already had a large respect for them and their responsibilities. The main character, an undercover cop, was the only one who seemed to throw me now and again. Understanding that he's covering for what his job really is doesn't really excuse his clumsiness with his female jockey. At times I thought maybe he had split his personality because for a while he refused to spend time with her outside of work, then suddenly he was messing around and not very good at it either. Beyond the clumsy nature of the relationship, which was almost refreshing because not all relationships are actually perfect, the book was a wonderful summer read, a perfect combination of romance and racing.Note: Though this book was a free gift from the author, the content of my review was in no way influenced by the gifting. The book speaks for itself and my review would have been worded just this way even if I'd gone out and bought it. I also give bonus points for Text To Speech enabling on Kindle format.... but that also wasn't a factor in the above review.

I was very entertained by this one. It isn't too romancy nor is too "thriller like." It's a perfect balance of both. The mystery: I had a basic idea of what was going on, but I didn't have the finer details figured out from the get go so that's a plus. The heroine: Awesome chick. She's a young woman trying to be a jockey. She isn't portrayed as super perfect or super tough though. She has weaknesses as well as strengths. She rides a race even after suffering great injuries, but she also drinks too much in a moment of weakness. She's "real."The hero: He's the only reason this book gets a four instead of a five. I didn't always like him much. He's undercover and I realize that, but I didn't think he treated Julie all that great sometimes. (His thing with Tiffany really ticked me off.) He also seems really indecisive about what he wants. He tells Julie he wants a temporary thing, but then he gets upset over her possibly seeing other guys. Really though, this is typical male behavior so Ms. Pettersen did a great job. The horse stuff: SUPERB.

Drugs, romance, and monetary stakes all lead to murder in this racetrack mystery. Kurt could not handle the undercover work anymore and tried to resign but settled for an extended leave of absence. Now Kurt’s friend and partner has been murder and Kurt is the only one with the skills and background needed to catch a killer. The real beauties in the story are the horses, but Kurt finds Julie, a female jockey, can be as dangerous as a mare protecting her colt.

I received this e-book in the Library Thing member giveaway in exchange for review.

From the back of the book: Racehorse trainer, Kurt MacKinnon, resents being yanked into undercover police work. But when his ex-partner is murdered, Kurt is determined to find the killer and moves his third-string Thoroughbreds to the backwater track where his partner was last seen alive.

Julie West, struggling apprentice jockey, pins her dreams of an elusive win on the new trainer in town, never suspecting she’s a person of interest—and not because of her riding ability.

Kurt didn’t expect his contrary colt to flourish under Julie’s feminine touch nor for his own rusty heart to soften. However, his deceit sucks them both into the cross-hairs of a killer, and suddenly much more than their love is in danger.

Loved this book, I am a horse nut so this was a great read for me. Kept me entertained all the way thru! I laughed thru parts of it and cried some too. Kurt was very real and made me really think about what it meant to work undercover and have to maintain a certain personality. Only thing is the title gives away the mystery, which was quite a spoiler.

Jockeys and Jewels is an entertaining, genre-blending mystery/romance. Bev Pettersen slowly unravels clues to a murder linked to criminal activity, while developing a believable romance between the two main characters. The story is set on the backside of a small-time horse racing track. Kurt McKinnon is a race trainer who has reluctantly returned to police detective undercover work because of the murder of his former partner. Julie West is an aspiring jockey, trying to earn her way into the horse racing world by exercising horses stabled at the track. Like the Dick Francis mysteries, which are set in England’s horse racing tradition, the hero/detective is a very likable character. Also, like the Dick Francis mysteries, we are introduced to a unique aspect of horse racing that makes crime possible. Ms. Petterson shares an inside look at the working side of grass-roots horse racing. She provides an atmosphere of camaraderie among people who share hard work, little pay, passionate dreams, and a love for horses and racing. Hopefully this is just the first of many enjoyable stories.
