    Whitepeak - Gabriella Regina

    Whitepeak

Jimmy was a sweetheart. That’s what Roslin had always thought.

If Jimmy were a food, he’d be a marshmallow.

If Jimmy were a drink, he’d be hot cocoa or sweet tea.

If Jimmy were a season, he’d be spring.

But in Whitepeak such things didn't exist. Roslin only learned of them after she’d traveled beyond that icy-gray bitter island. Spring, especially, was something unknown to the people of Whitepeak. The only flowers that survived there were plastic ones. This didn’t surprised Roslin, she’d learned early on in her life that love for living things wasn’t something that you should expect from your neighbors.

Even so, Roslin couldn’t hide the surprise – and even a little gratitude – when she realized that in middle of all the bitterness the island nurtured, Jimmy was one of the good things that existed there. It warmed her heart to see Jimmy’s red hair shining among Whitepeak’s shades of gray. And that, not matter how foggy the day was, all he had to do was smile her way for the day to brighten like a rare summer’s day.

But, every once in a while, Jimmy also had his own fair share of bitterness. In Whitepeak, nothing easily escaped the gray mass. Jimmy came from a hard family: his dad, being a widower and ex-military, liked to solve things like a real man, he’d say. And that, for Jimmy, meant fighting until someone was unconscious. Being the youngest, smallest, and least favored, it meant that Jimmy was usually the loser.

Fighting was popular on the island. It wasn't rare to see two men trading punches and kicks in the middle of the streets and instead of the authorities – or any other person who was sane enough to realized that was wrong – breaking up the fight, everyone would gather close around it, cheering and placing bets. As soon as one of the fighters had his lights knocked out, everyone went back to their lives like nothing had happened. In the few, but not rare, times when someone died, the gamblers gave all the money to the family, as a way to make up for the tragic accident, and the opposing fighter was never found guilty. It's just a game, the residents would say. It was an accident.

Roslin hated fighting. She hated even more the fact that, usually, Jimmy was stuck in one with his big brother, against his will. And Jimmy always lost, and every time after a fight, he'd run to the Den, a cave at North beach's borders.

That's where she found him that day.
