"Carefully determine what pleases the Lord.

Take no part in the worthless deeds of evil and darkness; instead, expose them.

It is shameful even to talk about the things that ungodly people do in secret.

But their evil intentions will be exposed when the light shines on them, for the light makes everything visible. This is why it is said, ‘Awake, O sleeper, rise up from the dead, and Christ will give you light.’"

    The Author

    Adriaan Jordaan

After schooling in the Western Cape Province of South Africa, Adriaan qualified as a teacher and then joined the South African Defence Force, being deployed in the intelligence milieu for approximately 18 years. During this period, he was involved with counter-intelligence operations and investigations.

Moving to a national airline brought the responsibility of national and international security risk management and the subsequent management of technical security systems.

A transition into the wholesale and retail environment allowed for experience in fast-moving consumer goods security and shrinkage controls. This transition was further enriched with the responsibility of designing of training material and subsequent training of security employees deployed within the retail and wholesale environment, as well as training of loss prevention employees.

Apart from many years of security and investigation experience, including corporate and retail environments, the author also carries various post-graduate qualifications in security, as well as the discipline of forensic investigations.

    Foreword

If you have any doubt about the personal security of your loved ones or you wonder about the eternal security of those people close to you, then this book is for you.

The purpose of this work is to give guidance to readers on how to approach crime and crime prevention in different areas of their lives to create a relatively safe environment to live in, to protect the all-important family unit.

The most important message of this book is probably the concept of ultimate security, or can we call it eternal security? Can that be reached in a world of anarchy? Where is God in these circumstances and will God help us reach ultimate security? Does God really put a premium on a person’s life? Does God really get involved in our security and can God keep us safe?

South Africa and the world is marred by violence, unlawfulness and self-gratification. This causes people to overstep normal societal boundaries and discard societal norms and values in a quest to satisfy their hunger for power, sex and money. Inevitably, this leads to criminal behaviour that impacts in various ways on law-abiding citizens.

In order to create a culture of crime prevention and awareness, this book addresses measures that can be taken to increase the safety of our families, whether at home, whilst driving, in shopping malls and even when going on holiday.

Internet and social media security is considered in order to allow teenagers and parents to get a glimpse into the online world. This will highlight the dangers associated with social media use, such as ‘grooming’ and human trafficking.

These measures will not totally eradicate crime against our families, but it will provide measures to live security as a discipline. In the end, security is a discipline, a way of doing things, and not an add-on to our safe existence when it suits us.

The question that the book poses in the end is the question of eternal security versus physical security. Does the reader consider the cost of physical security and the value of eternal security for the family?

What is security? There is much talk amongst people of being safe and many security companies use the expression of feeling safe to advertise their business. One can then speculate on what this feeling of being safe actually means. Does that mean that we are safe from crime or safe from harm, or what is actually implied by this feeling? Where does the concept of eternal security come into play, or is all that matters my personal security in the short term?

Many people, even in business, are content with a principle called ‘security theatre’. The latter condition causes a false sense of security and not a real state of security. ‘Security theatre’ is best explained as a level of ‘perceived security’, thus not real factual security based on sound risk principles. It is a matter of feeling safe versus really being safe.

As family, we must take responsibility to not ‘feel’ safe, but ensure we are safe. Families need to discard ‘security theatre’ and ensure that we implement basic security disciplines and measures to ensure the safety of our families. Nobody else will do that for you. It is a discipline that is lived collectively by family members. If we do not live a secure discipline, we increase the risk of harm to ourselves due to the fact that we then create a window of opportunity for criminals to enter our lives and cause possible harm.

How much will security cost? Cost is relative. It is not always measured in monetary value. Sometimes cost is measured in lives! The cost of safe living or not has consequences and costs attached. Sometimes it is the change of an attitude or determining the real threat to our safety or even just changing a routine.

This book is by no means a foolproof solution and is not the proverbial ‘silver bullet’ to solve matters, but the reader will be stimulated to understand the complexity of security and apply security principles in practice in creating a relatively safe environment for themselves and their families.

Within the current background to South Africa, as well as numerous countries in a fallen world, in terms of certain crimes, such as corruption, fraud, murder, rape, human trafficking, fraud and self-enrichment, the author is trying to highlight certain conditions and possible preventative measures that can be taken to minimise the risk to which families are exposed.

The following pictures depict the current perception and possibly the state of mind that is present within a country where crime has escalated to a level of anarchy where there is no respect for the rule of law, where the once-mighty security forces protecting the citizens has failed and where a condition of immediate self-gratification exists.

The plundering of these assets has unfortunately filtered from top government right down to ordinary citizens who took matters into their own hands to enrich themselves, as top government officials are doing openly.

    Source: MyBroadband, available at https://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php/659679-(Shut-down)-School-carried-away-brick-by-brick-in-just-two-months

With these types of criminal conditions playing out, we need to ask ourselves where we stand. Can a country, or the world, see a radical reform in terms of safety and security? Is it humanly possible? Is it divinely possible? Can God make the difference?

We need to take cognizance of our circumstances and stand up with determination to safeguard our families. When I refer to ‘our’ families, I refer to all ‘normal’ law-abiding citizens. We do not have to let circumstances lead us to a situation of utter despair, but we can lift our heads and proudly work towards a better future.

From a Christian perspective, God created the family, but the Devil is trying to destroy this unit. Once the unit is destroyed, the family is defeated. We need to start making the right choices to protect our loved ones!

Being secure is dependent on our attitudes through applying sound security principles.

Do not rely on someone else….

    * The Star, 11 October 2017

Ultimately, you are responsible for the security of your family unit. Start being proactive. Regret is always too late.

Once the family unit is destroyed, you are defeated! Start taking action….

    Chapter 1

    Understanding the Crime Phenomenon

    A Few Thoughts…

Crime is caused by various factors, which may include personal factors, environmental factors and socio-economic factors, to mention a few. These factors cause stresses in the individual’s life that may find expression in crime.

So what are the causes of crime?

There is no simplistic answer to this question. Various factors play a role in crime.

If the approach is that people steal because they do not want to work and pay for something, or that people steal because they are poor, then we oversimplify the issue. If we then apply the aforementioned perspective, we need to determine what people steal.

Do poor people steal? If poor people steal, do they steal something that they are in need of, such as food or clothing to satisfy their most important needs for personal consumption? No. Not all poor people steal. Some very poor people live an honest life!

Various motives for stealing exist, such as need or greed, environmental pressures, having to buy drugs or alcohol and many more. These motives satisfy individual needs and the individual steals. This now impacts on the security industry.

The Perception of the Private Security Industry in South Africa

When people look at the security industry, they perceive people working as security guards, in uniform, controlling access at certain premises or a security guard doing a security patrol. Some may be from a security reaction unit or transport cash.

The main cause for the state of security in South Africa is very simple. We do not have to make a complicated analysis for the reasons that security has such a negative connotation in South Africa. We can simply state that security has a ‘bad name’.

Why does the private security industry in South Africa have a bad name?

First of all, we need to consider that security is taking up the role of the South African Police Force (SAPS) due to the fact that the SAPS do not fulfil their constitutional duty of protecting citizens.
