Alexander the Great: Legacy of Alexander the Great From Beginning To End
()
About this ebook
Everything we know about Alexander comes from ancient sources, which agree unanimously that he was extraordinary and greater than everyday mortals.
Long before historians added "the Great" to his name, Alexander stated, "I would rather live a short life of glory than a long one of obscurity." He certainly lived up to this ambition, conquering most of the known world in just 13 years before his death at age 33.
A soldier whose genius for strategy and tactics is still studied in the modern world. A ruler who understood how to win the hearts and minds of his subjects. This is the story of a Titan of the ancient world, a man who rose but, though he died, never truly fell.

The Classical World
Alexander was born Macedonia, 356 (all dates are BC unless otherwise stated). For us to understand his life we need to understand what the world was like at the time of his birth, specifically looking at three cultures, the Greeks, the Persians and the Macedonians.
Cultures
For hundreds of years Greece had been split up into many different version of the dominant political system of the day, the city state, the polis. There were around 1,400 poleis around the Greek world, so naturally there was great variety among them. There was the famous Athens, a cultural centre in the 5th Century, Sparta with its professional army the great port town of Corinth among many others. During the 7th and 6th centuries Greece had escaped her Dark Age and was struggling to deal with the new influx of wealth, this led to great political instability. Tyrants sprung up only to fall in the next generation. Tyranny was generally hated and was something to be avoided or removed at all costs and the individual cities came up with differing ways of dealing with the same problems. Some were able to keep their traditional system of government, Oligarchy – rule
