    INTRODUCTION

Meat Loaf, the larger-than-life rock icon, starred in the biggest cult film of all-time, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, before releasing one of the best-selling albums of all-time, Bat Out Of Hell, and some of the most celebrated and successful singles in music history, such as I'd Do Anything For Love (But I Won't Do That), Two Out Of Three Ain't Bad and Paradise By The Dashboard Light.

The Grammy Award-winning singer has released an impressive eleven UK Top 10 studio albums, including the #1 releases Dead Ringer and Bat Out of Hell II: Back into Hell and his latest offering, 2016's Braver Than We Are.

Meat Loaf's epic collaborations with songwriter Jim Steinman are legendary, as are his striking album covers, wide-ranging operatic voice, female duet partners, signature red handkerchief and theatrical live performances. In 2016, he was presented with the Q Hero Award; to many that have had a hand in helping him sell near 100-million records, he is exactly that – a musical hero.

    From Marvin To Eddie

Marvin Lee Aday was born on September 27, 1947, in Dallas, Texas, as the only child of school teacher Wilma Artie and police officer Orvis Wesley Aday.

Aday's child hood was not an easy one – much of it was plagued by his father's alcoholism, and a struggle with weight: When I was a kid I was so big – I was really big – that I literally could not wear blue jeans. My mother would take me to Sears, and they didn't make blue jeans that would fit me.

By coincidence, Levi's jeans ran a radio commercial stating poor fat marvin can't wear levi's!, causing humiliation to grade-schooler Marvin, who would weigh 240-pounds by seventh grade. Aday had already acquired the nickname Meat at this point. Some of the playful singer's accounts include that the name came from his football coach or from his father. Meat Loaf later recalled, that after the Levi's commercial, nobody called him Marvin anymore – just Meat.

By 1965, Meat had already displayed his acting flair in school productions such Where's Charley? and The Music Man, before graduating from high school.

Wilma, Meat's mother passed away, leaving him with an inheritance that he used to rent an apartment in Dallas. He isolated himself there for three and a half months, before a friend discovered his whereabouts. But before long, Meat departed Dallas for Los Angeles...

In L.A., Meat formed his first band, Meat Loaf Soul. During the recording session for the band's first song, he hit a note so high that he managed to blow a fuse on the recording monitor. He was immediately offered a trio of recording contracts. However, he turned them all down.

Meat Loaf Soul secured their first gig opening for Van Morrison's band, Them. During a cover of the Howlin' Wolf's Smokestack Lightning, Meat Loaf Soul's smoke machine produced too much smoke, and the venue had to be cleared out. Still, the band went on to be the opening act for Janis Joplin, before a number of lead guitarist changes, whilst modifying the band's name each time, including Floating Circus and Popcorn Blizzard. Under the former band name, they opened for the Who and Grateful Dead, among others; under the latter name, they released the unsuccessful single Once Upon a Time.

Meat joined the Los Angeles production of Hair. With that came an invitation to record with Motown Records, whom suggested that he duet with his Hair co-star Shaun Stoney Murphy.

Released on Motown's subsidiary label Rare Earth Records, the Stoney & Meatloaf single What You See Is What You Get entered the Billboard US Hot 100 in May 1971, climbing to its peak of #71 the following month. Furthermore, it reached #36 on the same publication's Best Selling Soul Singles chart. However, June's follow-up single It Takes All Kinds of People failed to chart.

The record label's production team executed an album, including its tracklist, while Meat Loaf and Stoney were only required for its vocals. Entitled Stoney & Meatloaf, it arrived in September 1971. In support of it, Meat and Stoney toured with Jake Wade and the Soul Searchers, opening for The Who, Bob Seger and Alice Cooper, among others. Unfortunately, the album failed to follow its lead single into the charts. Meat left Motown and returned to Hair – this time on New York's Broadway.

Still in New York, Meat auditioned for The Public Theater's production of More Than You Deserve – an upcoming musical by writers Jim Steinman and Michael Weller. After performing the opening track from his Stoney & Meatloaf album, (I'd Love to Be) As Heavy as Jesus, Steinman quipped, Well, I think you're heavy as two Jesus' to be a matter of fact! The audition secured Meat with the role of Rabbit –  a maniac that blows up his fellow soldiers so they can go home. The production began in November 1973. Meanwhile, Meat Loaf's rendition of the musical's title track was recorded as a single for RSO Records, with a cover of Blind Faith's 1969 Presence Of The Lord on its B-side. However, the label refused to release it. More Than You Deserve closed in January 1974.

Meat was asked to be in American premier production of The Rocky Horror Show. The show
