In the Episcopal Order of Worship, the priest sometimes introduces the Lord's Prayer with the words, Now, as our Savior Christ hath taught us, we are bold to say,... The word bold is worth thinking about. We do well not to pray the prayer lightly. It takes guts to pray it at all. We can pray it in the unthinking and perfunctory way we usually do only by disregarding what we are saying.

Thy will be done is what we are saying. That is the climax of the first half of the prayer. We are asking God to be God. We are asking God to do not what we want but what God wants. We are asking God to make manifest the holiness that is now mostly hidden, to set free in all its terrible splendor the devastating power that is now mostly under restraint. Thy kingdom come . . . on earth is what we are saying. And if that were suddenly to happen, what then? What would stand and what would fall? Who would be welcomed in and who would be thrown the Hell out? Which if any of our most precious visions of what God is and of what human beings are would prove to be more or less on the mark and which would turn out to be phony as three-dollar bills ? Boldness indeed. To speak those words is to invite the tiger out of the cage, to unleash a power that makes atomic power look like a warm breeze.

You need to be bold in another way to speak the second half. Give us. Forgive us. Don't test us. Deliver us. If it takes guts to face the omnipotence that is God's, it takes perhaps no less to face the impotence that is ours. We can do nothing without God. Without God we are nothing.

It is only the words Our Father that make the prayer bearable. If God is indeed something like a father, then as something like children maybe we can risk approaching him anyway.

Teach us to pray!

Jesus' disciples asked him, Show us the Father, or Save me! or Lord, where are you going? On one occasion, they asked, Who among us will be the greatest? Jesus did not always answer, probably because their questions were misstated. It is a great achievement to ask the right questions. So it is important that Jesus did teach them how to pray. The disciples had finally asked the right question.

This is a book for people who are becoming Christian, who are trying to learn to ask the right questions. Because of the nature of the Christian faith, all of us, no matter how long we have been around Jesus, are always learning anew how to ask the right questions. No one of us ever becomes so faithful, so bold in our discipleship, that we become experts in being Christian.

Think of Christianity, not primarily as a set of doctrines, a volunteer organization, or a list of appropriate behaviors. Think of Christianity as naming a journey of a people. As you read the Gospels, you will note that Jesus and his disciples are always on the way somewhere else, breathlessly on the move:

Then he went about among the villages teaching. He called the twelve and began to send them out two by two, and gave them authority . . . . He ordered them to take nothing for their journey except a staff; no bread, no bag, no money.(Mark 6:6b-8)

The journey is an adventure in great part because it is a trip with Jesus, a trip toward trust in him rather than trust in those securities and crutches in which the world has taught us to trust (i.e., bread, bags, and money).

By praying the Lord's Prayer we are being made into a people whose journey is a sign to the world that God has not abandoned the world to its own devices but is present as a people on the move, a people moving out from their old ways and means, ordinary people who have been given the extraordinary authority to be part of the divine assault upon the realm of evil as those who cast out many demons, and anointed with oil many who were sick and cured them (Mark 6:13).

The journey is dangerous. Martin Luther said that, whenever the work of Christ occurs, demons move into action. So, in the passage from Mark that speaks of Jesus commissioning his disciples to go out with him on a journey to cast out demons and to heal the sick, Mark immediately says, King Herod heard of it (Mark 6:14). By his mention of a politician's name, King Herod, Mark reminds us that the journey with Jesus is also a journey toward the cross. The principalities and powers do not take kindly to a group of ordinary people breaking loose, letting go of the world's securities, and moving out with Jesus.

Because the journey called Christianity is potentially dangerous, this is also a book about prayer, Christian prayer, how to be a Christian by learning how to pray as a Christian. There are many books that attempt to explain Christianity, as if Christianity is a set of interesting ideas or a set of beliefs. By affirming a minimal selection of these beliefs, Christianity is supposed to give your life meaning and purpose, or fulfill some set of expectations you had in mind before you met Christianity.

We have nothing against your life being more meaningful, but that is not primarily what the Christian faith is about. Rather, to be a Christian is to have been drafted to be part of an adventure, a journey called God's kingdom. Being part of this adventure frees us from the terrors that would enslave our lives if we were not part of the journey.

Jesus was not a philosopher laying out a new system of disembodied belief. Jesus was a teacher whose life taught what he preached. We love and follow Jesus not simply because of what he said, but because of the way he lived, died, and was resurrected. Jesus did not ask us to agree with him but to follow him. He takes us on a journey, not just toward Jerusalem, but toward truth, toward a Kingdom we would not have entered without his saying, Follow me (Mark 1:17).

So Lord, Teach Us presents the Christian faith not as a set of beliefs but rather as a prayer that you must learn to pray. Along the way, we will discuss doctrines, but Christian doctrines are like prayer, a set of practices. The doctrines are meant to help us to pray, Our Father... . This book is shaped by the Lord's Prayer because the prayer is a mark of the journey called Christian.
