Oakland’S Citywide Poetry Anthology: Voices of the Future

About this ebook
Art is the universal language of the soul. In its truest form it lifts the spirit and consciousness of not only those that create it, but every being that experiences it. For it is this attribute we believe above all others that unites us as one-human family. In our darkest moments it is this light that shines through the artist into the hearts and minds of the world.
Th is anthology is the perfect opportunity for us not to only listen to, but to see life through the eyes of theses amazing young poets. And in doing so, we look beyond the challenges of today to the hopes, dreams and answers of tomorrow. We are not defi ned by the things we possess or the clothes that we wear, but by our imagination of things others cannot see.
It pleases us to support Project SOAR, a Federal funded project that encourages students to open their minds and hearts. To imagine and to reach beyond what they know so far, into the world of their hearts where a wonderful future lies. And this project is inspirational as well as practical because it gives students tools to make their dreams come true. For it is this that makes us truly architects of a new dawn.

It is essential to see creative education taught in our public schools. This poetry anthology gives students the wonderful opportunity to share their deepest feelings and their highest dreams. When we share our insights with others, we build community, which works towards joining, and not separating us as a human race.

These writings are from the kids that inherited the world we made for them. What a rich collection from the voices of the future.

Special thanks to Barbara Tavres of Barnes & Noble in Emeryville and Dr. Arthurlene G. Towner, SOAR Project Director/Principal Investigator, for the opportunity to publish a follow-up anthology to the first book of poems published in 2008. This project has been special to capture the writing of our cohort students when they were in 8th grade and now a second time as they prepare to graduate high school and look toward their futures.
We chose the theme I Am the Future
so that students had an opportunity to create the intention for their future as early as 11th grade. Intentions are interesting phenomenons that often brings thoughts into reality.
Thank you to the Oakland Unified School District’s Principals, teachers, and staff that assisted in the poetry writing and collection process. Special thanks to District officials that agreed to allow for poems to be prepared in classrooms and published in this book.
We would like to recognize KDOL television, Clear Channel Radio-San Francisco, Dr. Catherine Athans, and all of the partners that helped in increasing community awareness and support for this project.
Without the hard work and dedication of the entire Project SOAR staff, this book would not be possible! Thank you all for pulling together and making sure that SOAR students took advantage of this opportunity. In some cases, it is solely because of your encouragement that these students became published authors. Special thanks to Christana Gray and the Poetry Anthology Committee members whose visions added to the process: James Gray, Jr, Jacob Wasserman, Martha Hernandez, June Gray, Carolina Arroyo-Solveson—each of your contributions were unique and helpful in different ways.
And finally, to the Class of 2011, whose words are so powerful, whatever you have shared in your writings may somehow tie into your future. Be cautious, but be brave; be firm, but be kind; and in everything you do, respect yourself. Best of luck in your future!
