    CHAPTER 1

Lisa turned around in her bed, happy to be back at home in the small house she shared with her three younger brothers. The house was located just a stone’s throw from Nashville. There was a small sign near the front door: Home of the Stacks.

She loved coming home to Tennessee and being back in the land of country music. Whenever she drove her big freightliner, she brought her favorite CDs, and played the familiar songs that reminded her of the Tennessee hills and their kinfolk. She knew every song, and sang along at the top of her lungs as she drove.

It was morning, and sunlight drifted through the pale blue curtains. She loved the color blue. It reminded her of the sky and the promise of peace, away from the grit and troubles of the road. The life of a trucker wasn’t exactly a piece of cake, and being a lady trucker made it even harder in the male-dominated trucking world.

Her bedroom was small but cozy. It was a real treat to be waking up in her own bed instead of in some dumpy hotel room or in the cab of her truck, where the lingering stench of diesel remained in her nostrils. Above her bed was a sexy picture of herself. A fellow trucker with a knack for photography had asked her to pose for it. Bill also worked for the Kelly Trucking Company. Lisa was pretty sure he had the hots for her at the time, but she just couldn’t get herself to think of him that way. So they just stayed friends, and Lisa let him take a few sultry but tasteful photos. Get all dolled up; don’t wear jeans, Bill had commanded her. Put a flower in your hair, wear some jewelry and let your hair hang loose.

Bill gave her a copy of the best picture. See, I made you look like a movie star. You look just like Sophia Loren. It was beautiful, if she did say so herself.

The aroma of frying bacon coming from the kitchen brought Lisa back to the present. She took a deep breath. Wow, that smells good!

Soon, the aroma of freshly brewed coffee teased her nostrils. Her brother Brad was the last of her three brothers to get up. Chester and Richie had left the house earlier.

That Brad is a damn good cook, thought Lisa. The gal who gets him will have herself some fine catch.

In spite of the enticing aromas, Lisa was still tired and fell fast asleep again. The phone rang, awakening her from a deep sleep.

Who the hell could be calling me at such an ungodly hour? Lisa thought, barely conscious. She had gone to bed very late after having completed a run to San Antonio. She looked at the clock radio on the nightstand next to her bed.

God, it’s 10 a.m.! I thought it was midnight. She picked up the receiver, almost dropping it.

May I speak to John? A deep male voice screamed through the receiver. Lisa was furious.

First of all, there’s no John here. You must have the wrong number, and on top of that you woke me up with your howling voice. You sound like a wolf in heat…go to hell!

She slammed the receiver down, surprised by her tone of voice and choice of language.

Is that what people mean when they say you talk like a truck driver? Who cares! I really don’t give mind to those things. I’m Lisa Stack, and I’ll talk how I damn well please, or you can kiss my grits! I’m not one of those prim ladies sipping mint julep. I wasn’t born with a silver spoon in my mouth. My Momma and Daddy tried their damndest to get food into our mouths and keep a roof over our heads. It wasn’t easy with five young ones, makin’ a livin’ tilling the soil as migrant farmers…but somehow we grew up. We didn’t become criminals, but honest working folk. I’m proud to be working for the Kellys.

Lisa could be sweet as sugar cane, but could just as easily explode with a white-hot temper, blowing off steam with the vengeance of a locomotive.

She heard words dancing in her head, Am I becoming a mean-spirited bitch on top of a freightliner? She’d have to watch herself. After all, she was a lady and she did want respect.

Once again, the phone rang. She picked up the receiver slowly, almost dropping it.

    Hello!

    Hi, Lisa!

She recognized the deep yet sweet male voice, heavily laced with a Texas drawl. It was an unmistakable sound…her boss, Kynan Kelly.

You ready for another run, honey?

Lisa didn’t like to be called honey when it meant nothing. It almost felt as if Kynan was demeaning her like some kind of floozy. But she decided not to reprimand him. She needed this job badly, and did not want to do or say anything to rock the boat. The Kelly’s were a good company. Daddy Kelly and Kynan’s younger brother, Kellan, ran a decent operation out of the Texas Panhandle. They were honest truckers, not ready to screw you, like some of the other so-called trucking firms. Yes, she liked working for the Kelly’s. All in all, they respected her, and always paid her on time. She just had to put up with Kynan’s joking personality, even when she’d just woken up.

Well, give a gal a break for a few days! I’m really very tired. That haul to San Antonio was tough—bad roads and rotten people to deal with, yelling and screaming at me for being an hour late. Those crates of boxes were a heap of trouble.

Kynan sounded sympathetic. Alright, Lisa…take off ‘til Tuesday, then go for it. I guess this shipment can wait. They don’t seem to be in much of a hurry for the delivery. I’d like you to move some mattresses to Chicago. Then, pick up another load there from Kenwood Electronics Company and take it to New York City.

Had she heard Kynan correctly? New York City?

You must be kidding…you want me to go to New York? I’ve been dreamin’ for years to go there! Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve wanted to see the Statue of Liberty and all those tall buildings. This must be the best thing that ever happened to me, and you’re even gonna pay me to go there!

Kynan answered in a soft, teasing voice. No, darlin’, I’m not kidding. You’re the best person for the job. I need somebody very reliable, and honey, you’re the one. Don’t forget to take your lacy black nightie with ya…ya never know about those big, bad New York boys.

Lisa’s excitement over the trip settled down for the moment. Stop it right there, Kynan. Don’t make me feel like one of those strippers. I’m a home-grown gal and none of that craziness enters my mind. Besides, you know my brothers are still watching over me since our parents died. In their eyes, I’m still their little sister. She almost forgot to give Kynan an answer about the run.

Of course I’ll go. I’ll keep you posted on my whereabouts, as always, and if you’re extra good, I’ll bring you back a souvenir.

Lisa went on, fueled by excitement. "They call New York the Big Apple, and I’m eager to get a taste of it. I’ll be like Eve in the Garden of Eden, ready to be enticed by the snake. Hell, I’ll take a chance with the snake. I’ve been face to face with many a rattler before. What would be so different this time?"

Kynan chuckled, happy with her answer and her eagerness. Just be well and safe. Good luck, honey…have a great run!

Lisa hung up the receiver, happy and smiling. I’ll have to tell the boys. They’ll be so jealous. This is going to be a great day!

    She got out of
