About this ebook

A unique story of survival through unimaginable proportions.

The novel focus on dominance and control as well as greed and deception. It revealed a major concern about self-centeredness and how inaction and devotion could be mistaken for stupidity. The young couple's (main characters) diverging perspectives on life, stemming from their di?erent childhood experiences makes it a compelling read and thought provoking. A journey of courage , self-discovery and freedom.

Through the novel, the author found ways to reach out to the young and inspire those who seek to break free and focus on a new dawn.

What others are saying about the book! The crazy spiral spun by Bea Quainooh is almost more than one can bear. The truth is indeed stranger than ?ction but Quainoohs generously and courageously steps forward to testify to one of the truths of womens experiences in the goings and comings of marriage, livelihood and solidarity in migration. Reading this book sucks you into an emotional roller coaster.

    ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

I am indebted to a lot of people who support me in writing my first novel. Writing this book in itself was simply a miracle and a privilege. Many people helped me on this difficult journey. Their understanding and encouragement provided the push needed to write this story. I must first and foremost thank Doris, my best friend and Attorney; she is God sent and a true friend to treasure forever. Thank you for your constant support and sincerity. Yours has always been an inspiration from the onset and with truthful testimony of our friendship. You are the attorney I would want by my side at all times. Your friendship means so much and has evolved over the years to sisterly love. You are deeply appreciated.

Mathias, brother and best friend, for your courage and understanding and for being there always, you are my inspiration. You provided support and guidance, and above all, a shoulder to lean on. You accommodated all different emotions without passing judgment; you provided the stability in good faith, with utmost understanding. Never underestimate my love for you.

Thanks to Julie, my beloved sister. You have grown into an adorable woman. You broke down the physical distance between us and you’re always there to cheer me on, giving me the inspiration I deeply needed. Whenever I felt I have let you down, you lifted me up. There is a way about you which always finds the silver lining in all situations. Thanks for being my sister. I would choose you all over again if I have to choose.

To my big sister, sister Pat, your spirituality and faith kept me going with such hope and feeling of victory over life’s trials at all times. Your belief and faith led me to uphold and trust God with all my heart. This is victory for me and I dedicate my victories to those who fight a good fight. Thank you sis, you are my treasure.

Thanks to all my great friends for being you. Gifty, I admire your support when it mattered most. To Divine, a friend and mentor for just being there and listening as you did, thank you for keeping me going even at my lowest points.

Edem, you know you’re held in high regard. Ours has been a friendship across decades in which we honor our friendship with such joy and laughter, always. There are no two people who can be this happy together. You bring out such joy in others. Your advice and support is much appreciated.

To my publisher, I thank you for having such faith in my work.

To Tse, I admire your courage and your truthfulness. Your belief and faith is grounded in your humility and steadfast in your truthfulness. God reward you abundantly.

Richard thanks for always believing in me and hanging in there in thick or thin. You’re precious.

Juliet, daughter and friend, you came through at the right time. Always focus on what is most important.

Most of all, I thank almighty God, the constant presence in my life, who gave me the strength, courage, endurance and perseverance, to withstand life’s challenges, treatments and humiliation with a positive attitude. My goal is for the younger generation to learn from this novel, one person at a time as they stir away from unhealthy behaviors in the storyline.

    FOREWORD

    HIGH HOPES

The sparkle to build a dream on

It was in the early nineteen seventies. In Greenshore, the cool breezes of West Africa blew with the richness of the environment whilst children play in the sand with no care in the world’s crisis that loomed in the air. The bloody coup d’état of Chilean president by Augusto Pinochet felt too distant to the young Republic of Ghanubia youth as the journalist repeated the bloody events on the radio. Life was exuberant and joyful as the youth gathered at the city center to compare their High Schools and quote from their literature books while a tape recorder nearby blasted Elton John’s Goodbye Yellow Brick Road in the background. Life was rich with enthusiasm and purpose. Ask any teenager about love and it would simply be explained away in the feeling of excitement that would endure forever: The sparkle of light to build a dream on. Annabel was one of those teenagers. She was poised with her black long virgin hair. She wore her confidence like pleasant scented body mist that attracted others to her youthful vigor.

She was young full of life spiced by her caring. Even as she stood at just 5 feet 3, she exploded with the joy of life at 17 years. She blossomed with love and affection but yet took her education seriously. She was in a family of educators. What else would you rather focus on? Her aunt Berthina asked; as they discussed her progress in school.

I love education. She replied with a rather broad smile. Her perfectly arranged teeth exposed the perfection in her life-as white as snow. I’m not surprised. All your siblings are college graduates and you’re a much focused young adult. I’m proud of you. She said proudly. I love you auntie Berthina. She said holding her hand. How’s Vintage High. She asked. I love the school and I’m doing well. But holidays are like being discharged from prison She said smiling. Annabel attended Vintage City High, one of the top high schools in the area. It was 5 miles from Greenshore where she was born but Vintage was a much larger city with its metropolitan advantages. She was in a boarding house and loves the friendship she had developed. But as many teenagers, she loved the freedom vacation brought along. The school building was not particularly fancy. It was built with iron sheets which made it mercilessly humid during the height of the punishing tropical sun and the school Principal ruled with iron fist.

No wonder you love the freedom of the school break.Auntie Berthina said. She nodded and smiled. Yes, you cannot wear any dress above the knees on the campus. She said as she recollected some strict campus rules.

Annabel was walking 50 yards from her grandmother’s house when she met her Auntie Berthina on the side walk. She had always admired her. She was a nurse and a true professional. Her white uniform was starched and neatly ironed. She looked beautiful. No wonder she was her role model. As a young adult growing up in Greenshore, she knew education was her ticket to fly.

The Republic of Ghanubia is a West African country. The name was derived from its independence and election of officials stemming from its stable government that sets it apart from its neighbors. With its numerous coastal towns and splendid tropical weather, stemming from it’s proximity to the Atlantic Ocean, to the south, it was nicknamed paradise by the residents. The friendships and family cohesiveness was often obvious in the joy of its people which often radiates to the visitors and foreigners who called Republic of Ghanubia their home.

So in Greenshore, it was hot throughout the year. Located in the Southeastern corner of the Republic of Ghanubia and a typical tropical town, the tropical weather that persisted throughout the year was as welcoming as its people. Greenshore was a small town that earned its name from the tropical climate with its green shrubs and groves that lasted throughout the year. It boasted intriguing history, and a lively culture set against the background of rivers, streams but some polluted by the very envied ways of living as well as the tropical sunrise and sunsets that few in other parts of the world rarely experience. On sunny windy days, palms trees and cocoa trees rocked back and forth nodding and smiling to the beautiful surrounding vegetation.

The culture of its people stemmed from celebrations of each other’s achievement and friendships. Annabel was not surprised therefore that her Auntie took much interest in her education just like her parents. But no one doubted she was grounded and the 6th of 7th siblings, she had much experience from her elder siblings most of whom had graduated from college. She had three handsome big brothers and an older sister to look up to. Her big brothers protected her and tried to shield her from the world yet remained very caring toward her. Her older brother Frank was a disciplinarian but loving in his own way. Her closeness to him was through her nephew Frank’s only son Frank junior. Annabel adored him and literally took over his care whenever she was home from school.

As they stood by the walkway Auntie Berthina pulled her toward herself. She took Annabel’s hand.

You’re growing into a beautiful young woman. She said.

Thanks Auntie. She smiled. I have always admired how you carry yourself and hope you’ll continue to the highest level of education. She said. Thanks Auntie, I admire you a lot. She said courageously. Annabel was a bit shy but felt it was an opportunity to let her know how she felt. You look very much like your late brother as you grow older. Auntie Berthina said with sadness in her voice. Yes, everyone says that. Annabel’s older brother Nathaniel died before she was born. He was in college and did very well. He was the first born and was reported to be very handsome.

I’ve never seen his pictures. She lamented. Well, he was a young, fine man but God knows best. Besides, it was a way to avoid the acute pain the memory of his loss generated. I’m here for you anytime you need advice on anything. She said.

Thanks Auntie. She said. Focus on your education and make the sky your limit. She said as they parted. As she walked home, she imagined the connection to a brother she never got to know and how life could have been different had he lived. But she quickly refocused as she run into her friends and peers on her way home.

Two weeks after her conversation with her auntie Berthina, her life was about to spin away from her comfort zone-education. It was at a chance meeting while hanging out during the long summer break with friends that she met a young rather smooth guy. She had no idea the chance meeting of this young guy was about to affect her entire adult life. Not even the happiness of her childhood and lessons of influence from such an environment of wonderful tropical breeze and its people prepared her enough for her life’s journey.

    Prologue

    THE BEGINNING

    What does Love really mean?

Luke looked sophisticated and was a great communicator. He did not look anything like the Biblical Luke. She thought smiling. She loved his boldness and smart intelligence. You light up the room with your beauty. He said. Who’ll blame him? Jana asked smiling. Jana was Annabel’s best friend. Of the same age, they literally grew up together and attended the same school. They found out later they were even related though not within the immediate family unit. They were very close and did everything together. Jana quickly continued where they left off. Your hair’s thick and by your shoulders always neatly done. No wonder he’s attracted. She teased. I love your bright eyes, they’re very noticeable and you’re beautiful inside and out. Luke continued, smiling. Annabel smiled but said nothing. Look at your eyes glowing. Jana teased whispering in her ears. From that chance meeting, with Luke they hanged out often.

Several months later, their friendship was progressing into a great friendship. I kind of like the guy. She said. He’s fun to be around. Jana confessed. They were young, full of life and romantic love was overtaking them. It did not matter at that point and time their understanding of love.

On one of those days as they sat with their age groups of girls and boys joking and singing lyrics from the top 10 music chart, Annabel’s elder brother nicknamed Pop approached them. Anytime Pop approached them it was usually something that was amiss. So they prepared for the inevitable. Shhhh… Jana said with her index finger on her lips. Pop is coming be quiet. She said amid laughter.

Suddenly, He scolded her. Always know that a girl should marry an older man, not a guy of the same age. He said. Annabel was amazed but not surprised. Pop is very protective. She said as she and the boys laughed out loud at him. Pop is being Pop. Jana said laughing. His nickname was meant to show the father figure that he represented. Pop was strict, firm but loving. He demonstrated and showed he was the elder of the siblings. Who’s talking about marriage?" Annabel asked amid laughter. Pop retreated and said nothing further as the laughter drowned his words like they were never spoken.

Meanwhile, Luke, Annabel and friends continued to hang out and have fun. It was at the backdrop of the early seventies. The best music was the Bee Gees, Rock and Roll. Willie Nelson’s song "Always on my mind blasted on the radio. Then music was the food of life. There was music in the air. It felt like everyone sang. Annabel said. I love the Bee Gees. Jana said humming the lyrics of how deep is your love." So the songs drowned Pop’s words like they were never spoken.

Luke attended St. Vincent Secondary School. It’s the most prestigious High school in the town of Greenshore where she grew up. That’s how they met. It’s the best location. She said. The name revealed the location with its natural treasure of an environment full of rivers, streams and green land. So Annabel, her friends like other teenagers and young adults, swam in the rivers and streams locally.

We dive in the water and competed on who would make the most ripple effect on the hot summer days. Jana said. So, that chance meeting with Luke happened in the town center. She continued. It was a muggy summer evening. The students from St. Vincent’s Secondary School were in town. I was really excited about this. She stated, smiling. We felt pretty excited. Jana interrupted. It was a real big event. This is an opportunity to meet friends from other High School and compare notes, laugh, chat and just have fun and hang around. Jana said. What else would teenagers do in a rural town? Annabel giggled.

Luke was in the group of students who arrived in town that day. He was tall and stood out in the crowd. You reminded me of a boy I’d seen in town the other day. Jana said breaking the ice. It was probably me. He joked. He was with a group of friends, all students from St. Vincent Secondary School. They compared lyrics of the latest songs and discussed the concert in town that they planned to attend. It was like a dancing competition. Annabel recalled. It appeared every young person in town attended and danced. Jana replied.

One of the boys named Joshua was in the group and made a pass at Annabel. He had met Annabel at a different setting and established a friendship with her. Joshua was short but corky. Not even his guarantee shoes disguised his real height. He was one of those boys who thought he was better than others. His speech often gave him away. Everyone in the group knew he was interested in Annabel and so he made it so obvious as if to say do not go near her or sort of. His cockiness was sort of attractive in a way. Annabel confessed to Jana. I can’t believe you said that. Jana said. I’m surprised you found cockiness attractive. She continued. Well, he’s kind of cute. Annabel smiled. He reminded me of the deliveryman from a movie I watched. Jana joked as they both giggled and whispered back and forth.

Hey! How’re you doing? Luke broke the ice and struck off a conversation with Annabel. I am great, and you? She smiled. I’m doing well. He said smiling. They talked at length about life at their various schools. You find him interesting? Jana whispered.

But Luke did not let that distract his own intentions and attraction towards Annabel. He was all over Annabel so Joshua retreated to oblivion. He could not stand the heat. Jana said. Annabel smirked. They laughed. Luke interrupted. Annabel, what are you doing this evening? He asked. The giant Luke who stood at over 5’ 10 inches tall was not going to let the short boy, Joshua stand in his way. There was no fight as Joshua just retreated. Poor Joshua! Jana lamented. I kind of like him without his cockiness. May be he was just misunderstood. Jana continued. Well, you should read psychology. You seem to know people better than I. Annabel said laughing. From then, Luke constantly visited Annabel’s home mostly in the company of his friends just to hang out.

Even as he repeatedly pursued Annabel and established a friendship, it took some time to really fall for the idea of Luke being her boyfriend. He was likeable but not in a romantic way. She said. Well, most of our friends are not particularly fond of Luke. Jana retorted. It bothers me too. But he’s a fine guy. Annabel said. It was obvious none of her friends liked Luke. As a teenager who wanted to belong, she did not hesitate to find the reasons why her new friend was somehow disliked by others especially her peers.

So outside the dance concert that night, she soon learned that Luke was classified as a rouge. He wore tall guarantee shoes which were fashionable at the time. He moved with the high elite boys Jana related from the gossip. Really is that it? Annabel asked surprised. Well, she slowly warmed up to the idea, of Luke being her friend, because of the way he made her feel and before long they had established a strong bond and friendship. Unlike the perception of some of her friends, she observed a young adult from a very humble upbringing and shattered home.

As time passed by she learned more about Luke. One day as they sat on the football field close to his campus, he drew his chair closer. I will tell you all about me one of these days. He said. Okay, anytime at your convenience. Annabel said. My parents are divorced and my mum lives in a different city, in eastern region far from my dad. He said. How’s your mum like. She asked. I love her and she adores me. She’s the most beautiful woman in the world. He said with a smile. The rest you’ll get to know. He smiled. The smile was infectious as Annabel laughed imagining his mother’s beauty. As they parted that evening, they knew they were getting closer than before.

As their friendship grew, they dated on and off as young adults who were still trying to find themselves. Soon their friendship included their family members.

But Luke’s dad was an exception. Annabel and Luke had to play hide and seek when he was around. I’ll be disciplined if he found me in the company of a girl. He’s as mean as hell. He said. It sounded he’s very mean-spirited and selfish to the core. She thought. He showed no affection towards Luke. You’re terrified of your dad. Annabel said as Luke’s face frowned with terror as he talked about his dad. Yeah, he’s kind of mean. He said. So while he was around, Annabel and Luke behaved like just school friends despite now falling helplessly in love with each other. Shhhh, my dad is here Luke said. The signal was made anytime his dad was around. Okay, Annabel said and remained quiet as she pretended to read from Shakespeare.

It was one of those days that Annabel had visited his home. Luke’s dad lived in Vintage city where Annabel attended high school. The house was in a large compound with several small houses of Luke’s Aunties. But the proximity was deceptive as her Auntie’s were not particularly close to his dad. Why? She asked out of curiosity. He’s very selfish. He said. No wonder he didn’t pay your school tuition. She replied.

As their romance and friendship continued to blossom though they began to look forward to seeing each other more. I look forward to vacation times. Luke wrote. I can’t wait to see you either. Annabel replied. But their vacation time together was often interrupted as Luke often travelled to be with his mother, Connie. She pays my tuition and provides for my needs. He said. What of your dad? She asked. Don’t even go there. He warned. I’ll tell you the stories another day. He said.

But being apart did not stop him from writing, which they often did to express their affection for each other. Their bond became stronger and stronger. Was it love at first sight? Jana teased. NO Annabel said resoundingly. Our friendship grew stronger over a period of time. She said even as Luke admitted, for him it was love at first sight but waited to move Annabel along to the same level. How does love at first sight feels like? She asked as they giggled.

Luke visited on one summer evening while on vacation. It had been over a year since their last meeting. They walked to the beach in Greenshore to hang out. As they strolled down the green lane with lots of groves, along the paths, Luke’s height appeared disproportionate to that of Annabel. She lifted her shoulders and face up to listen to him as she stopped suddenly. A dialogue ensued as they sat by the streams that flow in Greenshore. I know you wander sometimes why I love you so much. Luke said. Annabel was silent for a few seconds. The sound of the stream seemed to sing a melody as the water hits the shore in the background. The area was full of groves and they were almost in seclusion. They were secluded a distance away from the occasional women who came by in the distance to fetch water for their domestic use. Annabel looked at Luke intently. Their eyes locked and they both smiled. Tell me why? Annabel asked. I know how authentic you are. I know how genuine you are and above all I know how caring you are. You come from a good home and apart from being so beautiful, you are everyman’s dream. I not only love you but adore you, now and always. He sighed as if to show how much emotional energy it took to tell her how he felt about their relationship.

By now the connection was electric. He held her hand, squeezed it and made her sit on his thigh.

Can we just sit by this stream forever? He asked.

Sure. She smiled. It looked like time stood still.

I love your company too. Annabel said. She felt the closeness. They had become closer and she did not doubt those words. I feel very connected to you. He said as he held onto her. They sat by the stream for hours as they talked and made plans for the future. As they walked away, they had no doubt they were in love and connected to each other. It was not based on money nor material things but just two young adults finding themselves, honestly. But the extent of how this innocence and honesty would affect their relationship deluded them just as the journey of the stream was unknown as it turns the curve of the river bank.

Soon people around them seemed to feel drawn into the energy of their romantic love. They became best friends. They completed each other’s sentences. They just hanged out alone or with other school friends as all young adults at that age do. They shared school experiences; they laughing, joking and having fun. The most awesomely sweet, innocent and utmost pleasure was to see them interacting with each other, Greg commented. Greg was one of the elite group members that Luke hanged around with. He attended St. Vincent School with Luke and had been close to him since.

Luke and Annabel did not call each other by name but right from the beginning, they often whistle to each other. It felt very romantic. Jana said Wait a minute. It felt romantic to you? Annabel teased. No, it sounds romantic to hear you guys. She corrected herself amid laughter. The whistling duo she nicknamed them. But Annabel had no doubt that it felt romantic. Friends and family love to be around them. We love to witness this young exuberant love affair which seems to be grounded. Jana admitted. It was utterly focused on each other’s well being and nurturing their love and love into their future. I hope it lasts forever. I see the sparkle in their eyes. Auntie Berthina said turning to Jana. They seem so in tune with each other. She said. They discussed future plans both educationally and their life together. But what that future had in store, like everything else, was yet still unknown.

    Chapter One

    THE JOY OF DREAMING TOGETHER

We see things from our perspectives

They have dated for about two years already. Oh! How time flies. Annabel recounted! She had graduated from Vintage City High. It was not a big deal as all her other siblings were college graduates so she sets her next milestone to graduate from college. There was no party, just a stressful period while awaiting her final results. Annabel was ecstatic when the results arrived. I pass. I pass She screamed her lungs out. Her dad Bob as he’s affectionately called, who often denied her beer, this time shared a bottle with her, as if acknowledging her maturity and her efforts.

Come share this bottle with me. He said with a broad smile.

Really? Sure. Bob said. She jumped with joy. Bob was an introvert so Annabel really appreciated this gesture. It was not the beer itself that was that important but the joy of both of them together sharing the closeness and chatting about her future. She found the taste of the beer repulsive. Why do people make a big deal of this drink? She said as she spat out the first sip.

Does it taste that bad? Her dad asked.

I kind of like the residual taste in my mouth. She said smiling. So she made the bitterness into honey in her mind and swallowed it. Her parents congratulated her. Let’s toast to your success. Bob said as they raised their glasses. She grabbed and squeezed her mother tight. Her mother Angelina was very funny. She often joked and left others laughing. Congratulations. I have no doubt you’ll do well. She said. Thanks I’m very happy. She said. She shared in her joy. Suddenly, her elder sister Faith rushed in. Ah! Let me join you. She said. Great, here’s your beer. Annabel teased. She shook her head back and forth amid laughter.

Annabel applied to many colleges but her main sight was set on nursing. Hey, you’ve got mail. Faith came running with a large envelop a few weeks later. Open it. She said. It was her first and best choice. They both jumped for joy as Faith spread the news to her parents and family members. So she was soon admitted to Saracoto School of Nursing. The College was in close proximity to the medical school, the School of Allied health surrounded by doctor’s homes with the entire elite community and their secluded groves.

I couldn’t have chosen a better school and location. She said proudly.

Your dreams are falling into place, so proud of you, my daughter. Angelina said. We call her Angelina because she always gives of herself to others. She explained. She very well lives up to her name like an angel. She gives her last meal to neighbors whenever they were in need. Jana said. Yeah, I admire her spirit of giving.

Right from the start Annabel knew what she wanted to do. She was very much grounded as a young adult. So no one was surprised at her progress so far.

She started college in the fall later that year, Luke had nowhere to go. The distance between him and his father widened as he matured and resented his lack of responsibilities though his mother still played a major role in his life.

His elder sister Susanna had denied him a visit to discuss his difficulties. Susanna was self sufficient and educated but of a different mother so although outwardly they appeared close, missing was that maternal bond that often binds siblings together. Even though her excuse for seclusion was different, Luke felt that the motive was to prevent him from corrupting her children. He feels I’m older than her kids and often in trouble and resented that. He said. Really, that’s no excuse to ban your own brother from your home. Annabel said. Well, that’s her decision and I’ll prove them wrong. He said emphatically. Annabel was doing much better though. She had the support of her family. She had accepted him into her life. At this point they were inseparable. Yeah, you have to put up with me. He joked as she smiled broadly. You bet. She said. But seriously, they discussed their future and did everything together.

So now in college, he appeared much older than his mates as he lagged behind due to many expulsions from High Schools. Luke’s education had not been smooth sailing.
