His thoughts turned to the pilot.

I am saving him from fear. I was not attacking him who face the unknown. If I listen and sympathize, if I take his adventure seriously, he will fancy he is returning from a land of mystery and mystery alone is the root of fear. We must do away with mystery. Men who have gone down into the pit of darkness must come up and say-there’s nothing in it! This man must enter the inmost heart of night, that clotted darkness, without even his little miner’s shoulder’s breath away.

Yes a silent communion, deep within them, united Riviere and his pilots in the battle. All were like shipmates, sharing a common will to victory.

    INTRODUCTION

There was a time when flying was magic. The wild blue yonder opened up the skies with a sense of adventure and delight. Suffering from the post World Trade Center syndrome, the reality and fantasy of flying means delays, impatience, anxiety, sometimes fear; the magic seems to wane.

Even with the frustration of delay or the anxiety and fears from turbulence, meditation offers a learning opportunity and chance to reclaim some of the pleasures of flying. The path to take is not unique and not difficult to master. Bring awareness to the breath, joined with associative peaceful images, meditation will become your ally on the flight. Learning to meditate through the use of breathe can help us enter into the heaven of serenity. By using focused breathing, guided by meditative images, the passenger lets go and shifts into a peaceful, alpha state of mind and can commence an inner vacation.

All that is asked is a slow inhale and exhale in accord with meditative images.

With this aware breathing, one can be freed from restless states of mind during the flight which sometimes lead us to unsettled feelings, fear and anxiety. The use of breath is available to all of us. One focuses on the breath’s rhythm; inhalation, exhalation, breathing in and breathing out.

To further quiet the mind and help with concentration, one can use meditation cues. Similar to what is known in Buddhism as gathas; a variation of Buddha’s dharmic teaching poems that can be keyed to the breath.

Concern about the past and future reference to the flight, need not be disturbing if you learn to be in present time with breath. You learn not to worry about whether the plane will arrive late or obsess about disruptions. You attempt to empty the mind of active thought and become passively aware. Where thoughts or feelings occur, dispassionately take note and allow them to drift away. You are attempting to shift from your problem solving mode into a relaxed, free flow state. You observe rather then think about events or feelings that flow through the mind. For example, if you are worried about the flight, just acknowledge to yourself, "yes I am
