    Introduction

Perhaps only a short time ago, you were a regular part of the workforce, one of the girls, one of the boys, just another employee with aspirations of becoming a supervisor in your organization. Fast-forward to today: now you’ve got the promotion; you’ve got the clipboard … Now you’re the woman or you’re the man; now you’re the leader … or are you? In my experience in the area of leadership, I’ve found that You’ve Got to Break Some Eggs to become the leader that you’re destined to be. You’ve got to think faster, further ahead, more creatively, and most of all, you can’t be afraid to make mistakes.

In over twenty-seven years of management and developing leaders, a few things have been true more often than not. Those who are new to leadership positions are often left to fend for themselves without guidance or resources to lead them in the right direction. There have also been leaders who have been in leadership positions for extended periods and had some successes, but they will sometimes spend large amounts of time reliving the good ole days and looking at past awards and press clippings. This started to happen to me—until the day I had a life-changing experience.

For those who truly want to make a difference and improve the trust level of your boss, your peers, and your subordinates, there are certain principles that need to be followed: For instance, you must get out amongst your employees to gain their trust so that you can develop them based on their talents. Each of them has his or her own distinct personality, and you must be able to identify and develop a strategy to build on individual strengths. The section entitled Let’s Go on Safari will help you tremendously in this area.

It takes motivation to lead. In this book, I’ll give you principles that will help you unlock that motivation.

You’ve Got to Break Some Eggs to Get the Leader Unlocking the Motivation to Lead

Mixing up the ingredients for success as a leader

It takes motivation to lead and to be a success in anything in life. It takes motivation to get up in the morning—whether from a desire to hold on to your job, desire to pay your mortgage or other bills, or desire to put your kids through college. It takes motivation to stay healthy—desire to maintain a healthy weight, desire to remain attractive to your spouse, desire to live to see your grandchildren. It took motivation for me to leave the old neighborhood and enter the military—the desire to see the world and strike out on my own, to be independent and make my own mark on the world.

To become an effective leader, you must follow the right recipe. The preparation timecorresponds to your motivational level. If you’re lukewarm, your effectiveness as a leader will be lukewarm also. Perhaps your motivation is the instant leader method—perhaps you’ve only read one or two books or listened to one or two tapes and then professed to be the leader of the pack. While those materials are important, they are only a portion of your recipe. If you’re truly serious and motivated to make a difference in others’ lives, you will realize that true leadership is a continual process and well worth the time. In this book, we’ll take a close look
