    DEDICATION

This work is dedicated to all my ‘sisters’ born and born again as I gratefully seek to promote Jesus Christ as our First Love and Supreme Treasure.

It is especially dedicated with a heart of love and thankfulness to my sisters of the Evangelistic Centre, Market Hill, St. George’s, Grenada, who for several months willingly travelled with me the road of the Samaritan Encounter to meet afresh Jesus Christ, Messiah and King.

    Foreword

Mary, the sister of Lazarus and Martha, anointed the feet of Jesus with ointment and wiped them with her hair (St. John 12:3). The woman who was described as a sinner, washed the feet of Jesus with her tears, wiped them with her hair and anointed them with her alabaster box of ointment (St. Luke 7:37 – 38).

Joan Purcell has written this series of Bible Studies for women so that they can be taken to the feet of Jesus because she knows that - like these two women of different characters - at the feet of Jesus, every woman can find acceptance, hope, healing, compassion, forgiveness, respect and dignity. It is at the feet of Jesus that we as women find unconditional love.

May every woman who occupies the position of teacher or learner in these Bible Studies have a life-changing experience – at the feet of Jesus.

I therefore commend these series to you.

    Introduction

As an avid reader, the Bible has been my most treasured Book – God’s love letters to His beloved world! Having spent years reading and studying the Bible, listening to sermons on the Bible and teaching Sunday School about the Bible, more than anything else, I’ve sought to find creative ways of opening up the rich resource of Scripture to others and myself.

Added to this quest is my commitment to respond to a strong call to work with and among women in the healing and transforming of our aching and wounded womanhood. Having had the opportunity to serve in the arena of women and development, now expanded to gender and development, I have always known that the very core of women’s issues remained untouched and that the spiritual perspective, although often acknowledged, was largely unexplored and unexamined and would remain so until it’s intentionally dealt with.

This series of Bible Studies is one such attempt. For me, albeit a small beginning, it is a grateful and thankful privilege to participate in the work of some of my sisters in the Caribbean region who have accepted the challenge to bring a biblical worldview to the theme of gender, but more particularly womanhood.

While the Women’s Movement has brought to the forefront some of the structural inequalities and discriminatory practices which have held women in a state of disempowerment and underdevelopment, like all experiences of humanistic change, it has had some serious deleterious consequences. . One such effect is the disruptive impact on the traditional role of the woman as homemaker, nurturer and childcare provider; the other being the negative connotation placed on the biblical sanctity of heterosexual marriage relationships.

A proactive, not reactive Christian response is required which will truly demonstrate the transformative nature of Christian womanhood. It is not enough to attack and criticize feminism as ungodly and unbiblical while both consciously and unconsciously we help perpetuate the very reasons and support the particular structures that brought into being a feminist agenda.

As keepers of the door, repairers of the breach, restorers of the standard, we have the responsibility to clearly, gently and sensibly put forward our position based on a biblical worldview, and to help Christian women to understand who we are in Christ, what is God’s purpose for holy womanhood, how to discern and fight evil in ourselves, our homes, our communities, our institutions (even our churches), and our world.

While as women we cannot be entirely blamed for the serious disintegration of family life and the crises which our youthful population now faces, we must however take spirit-led responsibility as the co-bearers of humanity to ensure the survival of those institutions, especially the family that would keep humanity healthy and whole.
