Dedication
This book is dedicated first of all to the Creator who deposited this great idea into my heart, for the strength and direction he gave me to carry it through, and for each person with whom he connected me. He is my source. I thank Him for his patience and confidence in me.
This book is also dedicated to my children, Gail and Christopher. For Gail, the constant prayers and for Christopher who motivated me when he said: That’s a great idea, Mommie…
To Adrianne, Christopher’s wife, and especially my two beautiful, wonderful grand babies, Marley and Paige Patterson.

Chapter One
Searching For The
Priceless Pearl
I have always wanted to write a book.
The book I’d write would be read by people from every social level. Each reader would get something helpful from it—a word, sentence, phrase, or thought—or perhaps a laugh, smile, or a tear. I’ve pictured a reader of my book pausing now and then to sit back for a few moments, reflecting on what they’ve just read, while gazing thoughtfully into the distance. And of course, after reading the final page, my reader would walk to the phone, call a friend, and say, I just finished reading a book—and it’s a must have!
Then from the other end of the phone line would be heard the question, "What book?"
A book so unbelievably good that it’s truly as I said—a must have. I will get you one!
I have the habit of browsing through a book, and if it piques my curiosity, I’m likely to buy it and read it, mark it up, then rush out and buy two more. I find that there is always a message, not just for me, but for someone else too in these books I buy, mark up, and give away.
My job is people oriented. I am always meeting people, speaking with people, helping people, encouraging people—yes, mine is truly a people business. I listen to people talk—happy people, sad people, and especially, people who really need help.
One day I received a call from a young man with whom I had worked about nine years earlier.
I don’t think you remember me,
he began, but my name is Martin.
I laughed. Actually, I had spent so much time talking with Martin that I could never forget him. So immediately I asked, How is your dad—and do you still have that house?
His dad had been very sick at the time.
My dad is fine,
he replied, "and yes, I
