    Preface

    A Parent’s Guide to a Peaceful Home is critical for building a successful, peaceful home. It gives practical choices for how to teach our children responsibility, respect, discipline, and other character values.

    It teaches the family how to relate to each other properly, which brings peace. You will be pleasantly surprised by how, if the tools and strategies are followed, the fussing between siblings and parents will cease. I know it is hard to believe, but it does work. You just have to do it. Everyone can learn how to turn toxic relationships into a wholesome family structure.

    I live in a peaceful home, and we will have it no other way. I have had parents who diligently follow the strategies for a peaceful home. Their children’s behavior changed at home and at school. The attitude change at school caused a domino effect with better self-concept, behavior, peer relations, grades, and happier teachers and parents.

    As an example, a third grader was having issues at home and school. His teacher asked me to talk with him about his lack of attention, incomplete assignments and homework, and overall behavior. There were constant outbursts and disagreements with his peers.

    I was walking down the hall when I saw a mother watching her son through the window. When I came back down the hall, she was still standing there. I noticed she was crying. I stopped and asked what was wrong and if I could help. She couldn’t stop crying. She said, My son. I told her I had to get back to my room, but I thought I could help. I made an appointment for her to see me after school.

    Two days later, she, her husband, and John came to talk. I had set up an In School Suspension class to meet with parents and assist in helping them to work together to resolve such problems. I was able to help them work together, and John was able to work through his issues at home and at school.

    I told his mother about affirmations and the importance of using them as she is training him. Using the words, Teamwork makes the dream work, TEAMTogether Everyone Achieves More, helped to bring the family closer. (See Appendix V) They used it often to bring the family closer.

    I saw the mother later, and she was all smiles. She said, Thank you so much. You don’t know how relieved we all are. She gave me a big hug. The family meeting was the solution that caused this family to work through John’s issues, which brought peace to their home.

    The bonus to this meeting was that John began to do his homework, get himself together in the mornings, and he didn’t miss the bus. His mom didn’t have to rush to work. Also, his class behavior and grades improved. I saw him at summer school. He was happy to tell me about his progress.

    You will learn how to have family meetings and how important they are. Believe it or not, your children will get so involved in the family meetings that they will want and ask when they are going to have another one. I know this because I have class meetings when problems arise at school. They are on Fridays. Sometimes an emergency meeting is called when necessary.

    Take a moment or two to visualize what you think a peaceful home should look like. Now, think about what your home looks like at this point. When this family meeting is done properly, your family will not want to go back because they will have become empowered with a healthy self-concept.

    Towards Affective Development (TAD) is a program that assists youth in affecting lasting change from within. In TAD, children (tadpoles) mature into responsible adults. The program is presented at schools, PTAs, churches, conferences, and other organizations.

    It took much praying, Bible reading, maturity, studying our children, meetings with parents, classes, training teachers, and reading other materials to find that when parents know what to do, they are grateful for the knowledge—especially when they see their children evolve into successful, responsible adults.

    There are many new adults that I taught who are contributing to society in a positive manner. They and other likeminded young adults will take their places as the next generation of leaders, whether they become presidents, lawyers, doctors, ministers, teachers, architects, artists, entrepreneurs, or whatever else moves our society forward. These reasons are the motive behind this book.

    I dedicate this book to a loving, living God who would not let me rest until I got the nerve to think about writing and then actually begin to write. I had a difficult time feeling like a writer—much less a skillful writer. Thank God for not giving up on me.

    As I read the Bible daily, I kept running across a certain scripture: My tongue is the pen of a skillful writer (Ps. 45:1, NIV). It stayed on my mind constantly until God woke me one morning with the title of this book. I jumped out of bed to write it down so I would not forget it.

    It was not difficult to understand why he gave me that title. I had conducted a pilot program in 2006, The Peaceful Classroom, at Southampton Elementary School in Richmond, Virginia.

    At Southampton, I became a permanent substitute and was able to implement my program Towards Affective Development (TAD), which helps students make changes within and become successful students in a peaceful classroom environment.

    Thank you, God, for showing me the need for peace at school and at home—and for giving me the title and the ability to finally write it.

    There were many times when I wanted to quit. When God gives you something, He will not let you quit. He gives me scriptures to confirm what He wants me to write.

    Now, finish the work so that your eagerness to do it may be matched by your completion of it, according to your means. (2 Cor. 8:11-12, NIV).

    Thank you, God, for having faith in me to complete this book when I didn’t have faith in myself.

    I know now that this guide was not from me; it is for our children.

    To my daughter, Kimberly J. Braxton-Brower, who is my best friend. I am thankful for your faith and insistence that I not give up. You know my heart like no one else besides God. You have lived with my untiring love for my students and know that my love for them goes deep to my core. Kim has seen me try to retire at least three times and just smiles when she sees me heading to schools as a permanent substitute with a special treat for the children that they must earn. She was not surprised when I told her that God had given me a book to write.

    I live with Kim, her husband, Eric Brower, Asia, and Paris. Our home is a peaceful one where love prevails. There are no arguments between the teenagers, husband, wife, or myself. I can write about a peaceful home because we live in one. It is possible. Thank you, Kim.

    To Coach Eric Brower, my dear son-in-law who has finally seen me act on what he has been prompting me to do for years. He said, Why not help many people, parents, and children learn how to raise disciplined children at home? Help them through workshops, conferences, and the PTA. Thank you for being such a great father. We need more people like you. Thanks, Coach. I finally did it!

    To my loving and deceased parents, Mason and Virginia Powell, who were supportive in their love for me in all I attempted during their lifetimes. Their encouragement never stopped for their baby girl. Thank you, Mom and Dad. While you’re not on this earth to see this monumental task that is now complete through God’s continuous promptings, you watch from the portals of heaven. I want you to know there are five more books to come. I love you. Thanks for always believing in me. Your baby is so grateful that God chose me to do it. He never gave up on me.

    To my granddaughters, Paris and Asia Brower. They are beautiful, intelligent, and disciplined. Both maintain B+ to A averages in school.

    Paris is a six-foot-tall basketball player, and I am proud that she is capable of getting a basketball scholarship. She is receiving letters and calls from different colleges. I was surprised that Paris wants to be an Elementary Art teacher.

    I am using this dedication to the girls as a springboard for parents. I want their example to inspire parents to start early (right after birth) to direct their children on the right path. However, it’s not too late to pick up right where you are.

    Thank you, girls, for assisting me with your technological skills. Paris illustrated the huge butterfly on the title page. She drew and photographed the picture for the appendix.

    Asia has assisted in the initial typing and copying. Thank you. Asia will be completing college with a degree in civil engineering.

    Sometimes when I asked them for help, I saw a quizzical look on their faces. I knew what they were thinking: Nana, don’t you know anything?

    To my siblings, the Powell’s, (Scope) Mason, Marie, (Bunny) Clara and Irene:

    Scope, you are there with a smile, encouragement, and your best advice. You boast about whatever I’m doing. There have been many things that I’ve ventured to do—haven’t there?

    To my sister, Marie Cain, who is so compassionate and still ready to share whenever you can: You have shown me a bigger life as I completed high school and permitted me to come to Cleveland to live with you. That is why I wrote this book. I learned to see the bigger picture of myself, so I decided to try fashion modeling in order to pay my college tuition as I entered John Carroll University. I quickly realized that fashion modeling was not for me! I was trying to look like you and be like you.

    To Irene Wilkes, an awesome writer in your own right: You have walked beside me, assisted me, and given me a treasure of information when I asked, What do I do next? How do I do that? Irene, your never-give-up-until-you-win attitude has rubbed off on me. You know how hesitant I have been. However, here I am—an author.

    To Clara Wilson (Bunny): You have a heart for studying the Word of God. You do it tirelessly and are ready to share that knowledge with all you come in contact with. Your love for the scriptures keeps you pushing and not giving up.

    To the Wilsons: Anderson (Junior) and Barbara, you make me feel so special when I visit you. I always get a red-carpet reception, starting when I roll up to O’ Taste N’ See Restaurant and trying to decide how much and what to eat from the ribs, fish, and the best hamburger this side of heaven. I can’t forget Barbara’s banana pudding. Thanks again. These few words can’t express my appreciation to you and your wonderful family. You have done something right with all of your children; Larew; Keli, an Occupational Therapist-entrepreneur; Josiah, a Junior in computer engineering with a four year scholarship; and Rachael.
