White supremacist groups continue to use their system of the secretive cellular divide while permeating into the very fabric of America. No one really likes to talk about racism so generally people don’t. I never did. When I attended the University of Washington, Seattle I found that there were classes on racism and I was amazed. I was brought up in a tolerant area and never dreamed that there was a racism problem in contemporary America. Two quarters into school I found my passion and started down my road to fighting racism. I figured that if I were to fight it I should try to learn as much as I could and I began to read and write papers. I didn’t really understand that researching and working with the subject would be so challenging. When I was in graduate school I was putting together a presentation about institutionalized racism and groups such as the Ku Klux Klan. I had a student government meeting and collapsed my computer screen but didn’t lock it. A fellow student went to my computer and opened the screen only to see a photograph of a KKK picnic. Not 30 minutes later I was feeling the ramifications of the situation. I can’t go into the particulars but studying racism isn’t easy. The good thing is that I am making it really easy for you to read about racism in America so that you can increase your awareness of the reality of what Americans face in today’s society. J.W. Gregory is a long-term researcher on matters regarding racism in America and attended the University of Washington, Seattle and Tacoma.

    PROLOGUE

    This book is based on a true story.

    I had begun writing this book while researching for my thesis and wanted to meet with a real Skinhead Girl to discuss my work in progress. Through conversation with a close friend I found that we had a mutual acquaintance that was once a Skinhead. I couldn’t believe my ears as I had met this girl several times and never dreamed that she was once a white supremacist. My friend contacted the real Skinhead Girl for me and we met at my apartment for an interview. I allowed her to read what I had of the book (including the murder chapter) and she said that it was really strange to read my work due to the fact that the story mirrored her own experience with a hate group. She described herself as the Skinhead Girl character and explained that she had been involved in a hate crime situation almost identical to the main character in Skinhead Girl.

    The Skinhead Girl subject and I have kept in contact via email due to the fact that she now lives in Europe. I am not sure if she is practicing white supremacy today but she hasn’t mentioned the white power movement since our first meeting. What I realized at the time was that I would soon find that there are many Skinhead Girl subjects in the United States.

    As I continued writing Skinhead Girl a homeless man was murdered in my city. I began to track the murder and the murder suspects and found extensive parallels between Skinhead Girl’s true story and the real life murder that I’d been tracking. I decided that I could not only utilize Skinhead Girl’s reality but that I could also utilize the murder story that was unfolding in my own backyard. As I looked for parallels of the two stories I found that Skinhead Girl’s murderous story was almost exactly the same as the story of murderer Tristain Frye. The main difference was their ages as at the time of the murder Skinhead Girl was in her teens while Tristain Frye was in her early 20’s. Because of the age difference Tristain Frye was given a prison sentence while Skinhead Girl was released by testifying states evidence against her hate group comrades.

    As my research continued the parallels between the two young white supremacists became even more obvious making this story a true story from two different positions. I found the similarities to be astounding. The two girls had even been members of the same hate group (Volksfront) but were from two different states. Some readers may be shocked when reading about the hate groups and hate crimes in Skinhead Girl so you may want to keep younger children from this subject matter.

    Hate groups may be a foreign subject to many people but Americans should be aware that these groups are alive and I believe that most are doing well in the United States. The subject of American hate groups is not new to me as I began researching white supremacist groups in 1997. There have been considerable changes made to their organizational strategies and rhetoric. They have moved into a secret society and are extremely careful of the people that they allow into their circle of white supremacy. I must say, as a realist, the problem of racism still not only exists but is permeating across the nation in a powerful and silent way. I know that some people do believe that racism is still a problem in America but I question what the average American believes regarding the severity of the problem in their city or neighborhood.

    A person may ask themselves why would someone want to write something of such a negative nature at a time when America lives with dehabilitating societal problems and devastating disasters. This is a simple question to answer. Although this book reflects the true story of a girl that commits a heinous crime it is not so much the particular situation or occurrence (murder) that I want to focus on. My goal is to focus on the fundamentalist threads of racism that are woven into the very fabric of our nation which is illustrated by the information included in the end note sections. These end note sections include links to real life websites, photographs and stories of hate crimes. There is also a Bibliography that readers can follow up or further research the topic of racism in America. Providing readers with these links was especially important to me as an author for many reasons, the most important being: Awareness.

    I wrote this book thinking of the ease of the reader so you will notice that the endnotes are in a readable font size and we kept much of the endnote text in entirety to aid reader understanding. You will see many surprising things included in the endnotes and it is imperative that these end notes are used for good intentions. That is, throughout this writing process there were many discussions regarding the problems of hate group endorsement of this book. Let me clarify. This book was written to promote the awareness of racism in America. It was not written to induce any type of criminal behavior or to become a book utilized by hate groups to promote hate. This book was written to examine racism in America and for no other intended purpose. Skinhead Girl was in no way shape or form written to instigate any type of racism or crime.

    This book would not have been possible without the longstanding support and ultimate patience given to me by my best friend and husband Alan. Thank you so much for supporting me throughout the years of the project, you will never know how much I truly appreciate all that you have done. Writing this book has been a process that began years ago and throughout my work I admit that sometimes the people in my life have been skeptical due to the fact that the story of Skinhead Girl is controversial in nature. Even with the controversial subject matter my family and friends have supported me throughout the writing and publishing processes.

    There have been many discussions of the problems and the ramifications that could result from publishing Skin Head Girl, but I found the encouragement to go on from the people who love me the most. My friends and family understand why I felt the need to write the story of a skinhead girl and why I truly believe that Americans need to read books like this in order to understand that racism and hate groups are alive and strengthening and not a thing of the past. I (unfortunately) believe that racism will always be embedded in the very fabric of our nation and I argue that we must understand racism in order to fight racism.

    I would like to thank my good friend Charlie Hill. Our relationship began as friends but in just a few weeks he was on board with the project and he was almost immediately given the long and torturous task of editing the bibliography, poor guy! I can’t count the number of long days and late nights that we spent together on our road to publishing. Honestly, there is no way that I could have done it without Charlie’s continuous support and humor.

    Also, thank you to Deron Jones for taking my simple ideas for the cover and making it a masterpiece. I would also like to note my appreciation for my friend Lisa Dupuy. Thank you for all of the phone calls to check on me and for giving me time to discuss all the craziness surrounding the process of writing and publishing, you mean the world to me.     CHAPTER ONE

    Journaling

    It all began when me and three of my Skinhead comrades were arrested for murdering a homeless man under a bridge.¹ A person may wonder why I would write a journal incriminating myself. To be honest, it took a lot of persuasion on the part of my family and the court to write this journal but when it came down to my deal with the judge and the difference of getting a life sentence, the death penalty or possible leniency…..well, I now believe that this journal may be my only way out of the situation that I am in right now and my only chance of having a life after the trial. It’s a really good thing that I am so young, if I go states evidence against the other three then I may be able to get outta this mess. To aid my cause I’ve been seeing a court appointed shrink and between him and the judge they believe that if I document some of my life from my childhood to the day of the murder that the journaling will help me to view life differently and change my vengeful ways. Reality is, to change my life I will have to change my entire world as I know it.

    Even though I have been given the opportunity to receive some leniency from the court the possibility of being locked in a prison or walking the green mile is very real and incredibly immediate. And, even though I will be in the midst of a murder trial the fact that I have to write this journal seems redundant to me and in reality I don’t see how it will help me change my ways but I will comply and try not to complain. When I was discussing the journal with my court appointed traditional cognitive psychotherapist, Dr. Colin Berger, I was told that whatever I write will involve only me in the legal process and that my family will bear no legal ramifications (the document will be sealed with the other private court documents at the end of the trial). I don’t completely understand all this legal stuff but the whole journal thing makes me more than nervous than the trial itself…..well, almost. Good thing Dr. Berger made sure that the judge won’t hold this journal against me or my family…..sure hope that he is telling the truth and that I won’t be betrayed.

    This journal will be my story and will also provide my inner feelings about my past and present criminal behavior and how I feel about the murder that I was involved in. The good Dr. Berger believes that starting at the beginning of what he has termed my negative behavior will help me work through what he considers my racist ideological problems. The most bazaar thing about this whole reflection process is the fact that I really don’t see my attitude as being racist the way he sees it when I talk about my life. It is difficult for me to listen when the doctor calls my attitude intolerant as I don’t see my life as he does. To me, my life reflects reality - the way the world really is and honestly, reality can be harsh sometimes.

    As much as I don’t trust the judicial court system or the doctor I will do as requested and battle my desire to protect my family and my entire way of life. I sure hope that his Royal highness (the judge) won’t change his mind about ramifications to my family as they’d be screwed by me sharing the truth of our secret world. You see, the doctor doesn’t see life or the afterlife as I do – he doesn’t see the bigger picture of maintaining the American status quo much less the ethical nature of the White Supremacist lifestyle.

    Before I jump into what Berger calls the meat and potatoes of my ideological problem I do want to clarify that at the onset of the journaling process that I do not agree that my crime was perpetrated in error and that I truly believe that my resilient belief in white supremacy will allow me to stay true to myself throughout the trial.

    Berger tells me that this journal is merely a tool to examine my inner self and to aid in changing my attitude from complete intolerance to a more tolerant nature (surely he’s not dumb enough to think that I will make a 180 degree turn no matter how much journaling or therapy). Berger also said that this journal is for my own personal growth and that I need to fully share to change and that simply ranting and raving will not make for change. What makes me nervous about this is that Berger sees my normal conversation to be ranting and raving – I hate it when we are in session and he tells me that I am ranting and raving when I am only discussing how I feel! He understands nothing about passion and having strong moral beliefs.

    I am in a real predicament here and am questioning how does a person evaluate their own compassion when they don’t see any problems with their lifestyle overall? The fact that Berger tells me that I should use this journal to understand my own foundation of racism seems a moot point to me. I am a realist and to me there is no distinction between a person and their belief system. I am a perfect example of this due to the fact that my belief in white supremacy is the most important part of myself. This inner belief stems from the Bible and the very fabric of the Constitution of the United States of America and should be the strength of every living white American. Berger would tell me that I am ranting but for me fighting for a white nation is a normal everyday thing. Why fight it? The doctor has been asking me where my racist ideology came from and the answer is an easy one to determine, tradition and truth. At this point – I am what I am.     1  We were unable to include the image of the article regarding Randall Townsend’s murder due to copyright infringement laws. There was actually a series of articles published regarding the murder of a homeless man (Randall Townsend) as the murders were committed by members of white supremacists groups that were trying to gain red laces by committing acts of violence. This act of violence resulted in the murder of an innocent man caught at the wrong place at the wrong time. The article Prosecutors put hate on trial discusses the murderers, "Kurtis Monschke has a huge swastika tattooed on his chest, a German war eagle on his shoulder and several other hate symbols on his arms and legs. Before he went to jail to await trial for murder, the slight, blond teen kept his head shaved, owned a copy of Adolf Hitler’s ‘Mein Kampf’ and decorated his Tacoma apartment in Nazi symbols. He passed out hate literature in his South End apartment complex, tried to recruit neighbors to his cause and watched a violent racial killing in the 1998 movie ‘American History X’ again and again, Pierce County prosecutors say. When jurors hear all that in his trial next month, they’re going to hate him and unfairly convict him, Monschke’s attorneys fear.

       ‘When we inflame the passion and prejudice of the jury with hate symbols, people stop feeling rational about the case,’ said attorney Jay Berneburg. Prosecutors say Monschke, now 20, was an integral part of a killing that happened because of his beliefs and how he thought the crime could raise his status in the white supremacist movement. ‘We are trying to present a fair and accurate picture of someone who is part of this movement and as part of his beliefs, he murdered an inferior,’ deputy prosecutor Greg Greer told the judge. Prosecutors allege Monschke and three friends murdered Randall Townsend, a 42-year-old homeless man, for two reasons: Monschke, David Pillatos and Scotty Butters wanted Pillatos’ girlfriend, Tristain Frye, to earn the right to wear red shoelaces by beating someone, and to prove to the supremacist community they ‘walk the walk’ in a culture that often advocates violence.

       Superior Court Judge Lisa Worswick said that when the trial starts in early May, prosecutors can try to prove Monschke had the opportunity and bias to commit the crime and that his beliefs were part of the history of the crime. ‘I realize there are some prejudicial aspects of the testimony that will be presented,’ Worswick said after hearing lawyers argue about the issue over three days last week. But, she said, it’s a revealing point that outweighs the prejudice. But Worswick said she doesn’t want the state to overwhelm jurors with inflammatory details. She said attorneys can’t mention the ‘Whites only’ tattoo on Monschke’s penis, argue that he has called the ‘Diary of Anne Frank’ a fraud or that he covered his jail cell with racist graffiti.

       The beating of a white man - Prosecutors say Monschke, Pillatos, Butters and Frye bought baseball bats and went out looking for a black drug dealer to beat up early March 23, 2003. Under Tacoma’s East 26th Street bridge, they approached a black man who scared them off with a machete. Then, while Monschke was further down the railroad tracks, Frye, Butters and Pillatos attacked Townsend. Even though he was white, they picked him because they thought he was a drug addict. They beat him with a bat, kicked his head and dropped a boulder on his face. Prosecutors say Butters and Pillatos then put his mouth on the railroad tracks and stomped on the back of his head, an act that since the movie ‘American History X’ has become a sign of a supremacist attack. Afterward, prosecutors allege, Monschke joined them, and after seeing Townsend was still breathing, beat him in the face with a baseball bat. Prosecutors say Monschke later said, ‘I wonder if God gives brownie points for this.’ Defense attorneys say the attack from the movie never happened and that Monschke didn’t join the group until after the other men had fatally injured Townsend.Pillatos, Butters and Frye made deals with prosecutors, pleading guilty to reduced charges and each agreeing to testify against the others. Monschke rejected the prosecution’s offer and will go to trial charged with the state’s worst crime, aggravated first-degree murder. The only possible punishment if he’s convicted is life in prison, with no chance of release…White supremacists believe the white race is at risk because of a ‘rising tide of color’ masterminded by Jewish people, and they share a hatred of Jews, racial and ethnic minorities, gays, drug addicts and others, prosecutors say.     CHAPTER TWO

    Murder

    To begin this particular journal entry is more than difficult than I ever could ever imagine, in fact, it is excruciating. Writing down the details of the murder is admitting to my actions which is something that I promised myself and others that I would never, ever do. Testifying in this journal is worse to me than committing murder and paying the penance.

    Non-disclosure is a large part of the white supremacist lifestyle to say the least. We even have a family code of silence which my father penned long ago and amended with the invention of the Internet. The white race will remain supreme with secret solidarity, we are smarter and better than in the past, silence is golden and the Internet is power. We don’t keep diaries or journals. There were never any journals under the tree at Christmas. If a person were to journal they certainly wouldn’t write down any of their criminal behavior. If I got screwed and this journal was introduced as evidence, last I heard, I would be looking at the death penalty, or even worse…I could face being behind bars for a long, long time, if not forever. Even if the courts select the most conservative jury members my chances of freedom without this journal assignment are slim. My greatest power right now is my faith in the Lord above.

    The court finally gave me my religious books to help me calm my nerves. In addition to the severe stress of the journaling, I have begun calling my sessions with Dr. Berger as the Berger bashing hours as our personal differences and opposite core beliefs are becoming more and more apparent as the therapy sessions continue. Something is just not right with him but I can’t seem to put my finger on it. And it seems as though as time goes on we relate less and less but really, in the big picture my therapy situation is the last of my worries.

    On the legal side, both the Prosecuting Attorney Wendell Jamison and the State have now labeled the murder as a hate crime. Tried and true. I have noticed that now that the murder has been labeled a hate crime people are really pissed when having to deal with me. Especially people in the court system that I come in contact with, I hear some of them whisper about hate mongers. So Berger advised me today that the official description of our hate crime includes verbiage like a rampage of hate and disorder, premeditated, brutal, aggravated, etc…etc….

    I told him that this news was no surprise to me as last night before dinner I was able to hear the television from my cell (I have no privileges and am not allowed to watch television) and I could hear that the report was about us. Guess we ARE famous. I actually stood up and went to the bars of my cell to try to hear better….sounds like not only does the Prosecuting Attorney want our heads on platters but that the general public would love to see us hang as well.

    I asked Dr. Berger about the others this morning in my session and he told me that he could not advise me on the woes of my National Alliance and Volksfront comrades. In my second attempt I asked if they were all in the same jail as me. After my question was met with silence Dr. Berger attacked me with a barrage of questions regarding how my parents could have taught me to hate and how I ended up being associated with the group the National Alliance. He asked how I could agree to end the life of a human being for a mere membership. When he said the words mere membership I cringed and wanted to scream as he clearly did not understand anything about my lifestyle….even after our numerous sessions!

    I explained to him that my connection with the National Alliance (NA) was merely a progression in life. I tried to clearly and sincerely describe my progression through life as a white supremacist and how my life was similar to the life of a regular white person. I told him that it is like getting a K-12 education beginning with kindergarten and ending with graduating at the end of senior year, merely a standard progression in life. You don’t jump from kindergarten to high school without going through the motions and experiences.

    Shouldn’t be a tough thing to understand….but Dr. Berger sure doesn’t seem to get it! He doesn’t understand that my entry into the world of the NA was like finding the perfectly fitting boots (doc martens lol).¹ I miss my comrades. If I wasn’t in here wasting away I would be back at the beck and call of my beloved NA right now.

    Because Dr. Berger can’t wrap his intellectual mind around the progression of the life of a skinhead I explained to him that my life’s progression was a happy, natural and healthy one. As we grew as children we changed group affiliation with our level of maturity and philosophical growth. When we were youngsters our parents were heavily involved (and still are) with the Ku Klux Klan (KKK) and appreciated and respected the biblical philosophies and family orientation of the group.

    The KKK has lots of great information for families and children,² the events³ are engaging and the website is terrific⁴….and always has been. And if a poor child has to be in public school when in a white supremacist family,⁵ omg, children must rely on the information on the site even when writing a simple paper!⁶ The KKK has a program for young white supremacists⁷ which my parents utilized to begin our Anti-New World Order⁸ orientation.⁹ (The New World Order is an ideology that fights against global power surpassing the power of nations.)¹⁰ All of us kids spent time in the KKK division of the Knights Party Crusaders Youth Corp¹¹ which put all of us on the same page, working together.¹² The Youth Corp allowed us to learn about our white power and pride and to spend time with other kids and teens who were either just like us or wanted to be like us.¹³

    When we entered into our tween and teen years our parents allowed us to research different white supremacist groups and although their preference was for our family to be forever associated with the KKK they allowed our ideological growth. Our parents knew that no matter what group that we were members of that our unfaltering belief in white supremacy, our strong Christian backgrounds and our understanding regarding the constructionist view (true reading) of the Bible would never falter. So they not only allowed us to branch into newer, more progressive and violent groups but they welcomed our progression, growth and desire for more power. The beautiful thing was that through my transition there was the creation of the Internet.¹⁴

    With the Internet we were able to communicate with other white power groups virtually undetected. The Internet was vital for establishing solid relationships with affiliated group members before meeting them face to face (affiliated groups are groups that are parallel in beliefs and ideology). Even back in the good old days of the early Internet the opaque interaction provided so many more options for us and we always had several affiliated groups located close to our residence. The transition from the KKK to more intense groups was a no brainer. Pre-Internet we would have faced challenges that only people my parents’ age understand. So, when looking for more excitement we were able to utilize the Internet to find our most perfect ideological match and group.¹⁵

    How this progression worked for me personally was from the beginning with the KKK and then moving into the National Alliance (NA). I think that the next time Dr. Berger asks me how’d you get to the point of murder my answer will simply be my early life in the KKK and my final transition to the NA and everything in between.

    As my siblings and I looked at different groups to join or hang out with we spoke often of the fact that we were outgrowing the KKK and we fully knew that we would move on to groups that used more effective and dramatic tactics. The NA attracted me because of the groups’ power and extensive theoretical background. National Alliance’s main tenant was clear as their motto reads We will do whatever is necessary to achieve this White living space and keep it White…We realize that it is absolutely necessary for our racial survival.¹⁶

    I learned a lot from my parents, older siblings and from my comrades at the KKK and the NA. The most important lesson was the cellular divide concept.¹⁷ The concept was established by Louis Auguste Blanqui who was the leader that organized the Bolshevik system (anti-Semitism movement of the late 19th century) in order to overturn an oppressive governmental system by using the ideology of cellular divide and let me tell you, we have always taken advantage of this strategy in every way possible.¹⁸ Dr. Berger asked me how the cellular divide system effects today’s world of hate groups, what a stupid question. It is amazing how little the average American knows about the world of white supremacy.

    The cellular divide means everything to hate groups, especially in the world of the Internet. To divide and conquer is the general notion….so we divide into small cells as the people did in the 19th century and if they succeeded in overthrowing the government way back then imagine what power can be had by involving the Internet.¹⁹ Breaking into small covert secretive cells we can communicate via the Internet in small numbers and then meet in small numbers to make things anonymously happen or in larger numbers to celebrate our work and numerous causes. Our secretive cells work in anonymous and powerful ways.

    An easy way to understand this is to examine the past prominent behavior of the U.S.A.’s oldest white supremacist group, the KKK. In August 1925, 40,000 Klansmen marched on Washington, D.C.,²⁰ with most of the marchers opening their hoods to show their faces.²¹ This is a very different scenario than in today’s world. Rarely does a large group venture into the limelight for our cause (although we do meet for rallies but there is a lot of security getting into the gates). We always keep in mind the fact that we are constantly monitored by law enforcement and as a result we have turned to underground methods and which has lowered the overall incarceration rates²² for white supremacists.²³

    It seems as though we were always looking for a group that could get more involved in taking our country back from the mudpeople.²⁴ Mudpeople are niggers, faggots and jews and all the others who are non-Aryan.²⁵ As terminal skinheads we have always been involved in aggressive terror and recruiting procedures (whenever possible) and we have always felt that these tactics are paramount to the success of the White Supremacy Skinhead Movement. My decision to join the National Alliance was simple and the transition was seamless.

    My parents always gave us money to go on road trips and several of my brothers and sisters suggested a road trip to a White Power music festival (I will never forget it, the event was hosted by the Imperial Klans of America which is why we knew about it in the first place). My parents agreed and we started planning the trip.

    The event was called Hammerfest and the party was to honor the Hammerskin Nations hero Joe Rowan who was murdered by a nigger in 1994.²⁶ Joe Rowan is considered a hero, they say that his favorite words were honor, loyalty and bravery. We had already done our research about the Hammerskins²⁷ and we knew that one of the reasons why the Hammerskins are so successful is that they use music to promote new membership and by selling the music they also benefit by incoming revenue. Before we left for the event my father told us to make sure and pay attention to the logistics of the venue and to notice how the Hammerskins run the business side of the event. He said that we might just learn a thing or two.

    The dead hero, Hammer Joe (the Hammerskins call comrades fellow Hammers) was the lead singer of the band Nordic Thunder and was only 22 when he was shot and killed. Everyone at the event was talking about Hammer Joe’s legacy and they toasted many times to the fact that his legacy will continue as he has two children, they always said that Hammer Joe would fight till death – hopefully his children understand the importance of the white supremacist movement and will be willing to sacrifice as their father did for the cause.

    We walked around and met lots of cool people. The people-watching at these rallies is always fantastic! There were guys wearing Braces,²⁸ Fred Perry polo shirts, red laces, strait-laced doc martens²⁹ and oh all of the Colors!³⁰ And even better, some of the clothing that the Featherwoods were wearing! I knew that I would never be able to get out of my house dressed like some of them were that’s for sure! There were Members, Freshcuts, Probates,³¹ Prospects³² and there were even some Hang-arounds.³³ There were both large and small crews.³⁴

    Father had given us kids a bunch of cash so we went to the vendor booths to peruse their wares. I bought a really cool Skinhead Girl patch fully aware that my mother would only let me put it on one of my in-house sweaters or jackets.³⁵ She never lets me wear shit like that out of the house cuz she says it just upsets the cops (her words). Jerusha bought two music cds of the bands Battle Axe and Angry White Youth. That purchase would definitely make my older brothers happy! We walked up to a t-shirt booth and bought white pride t-shirts which we could wear anytime anywhere. My mother just didn’t like us labeling ourselves Skinheads otherwise I’d have a Skinbyrd³⁶ tattoo by now (she hates tattoos as well). She has great conviction about a person’s body being a temple and all…So we wandered over to the band area and looked for our brothers but they weren’t around. We stopped at the music stage and there was a band setting up.

    The band began playing loud and powerful music.³⁷ The crowd was totally into it and they were yelling HFFH³⁸ and 838!³⁹ We were all getting really rowdy dancing, partying and laughing. Jerusha and I moved to the side of the stage area to avoid being drawn into a
