CHAPTER ONE
Dottie awoke with a start, her heart beating like a goat skin drum on Junkanoo Morning. The tangy taste of salt was on her tongue and the stinging scent of silt in her nostrils, she could even hear the sound of waves beating on her ear drums. For one brief moment she was back again, drowning in the horror, fighting for her life. Back again in the nightmare that had nearly taken her life two short months ago. Dottie shook herself vigorously trying to dispel the creeping fear that padded up her spine and chilled her still racing heart. She wondered if she would ever get back to being at peace with the world and everything in it. Somehow, her narrow escape from death at the hands of Hurricane Floyd had undermined the very fundamentals of her existence, and left her a quivering, nervous wreck at every turn. She tried desperately to pull herself together and take stock of her surroundings. She reached out, trying to sense the comforting presence of her Owner, but couldn’t detect any movement in the new, and still strange apartment. All that she could hear were the blinds clapping loudly as the strengthening wind disturbed them into motion. The darkness hung heavily around Dottie’s shoulders as a vague sense of unease nudged at her consciousness, something was not quite right with the world! It wasn’t just the lingering dread of the fading nightmare that was causing the prickling of fear and the raising of hairs along her back, something was definitely amiss! Dottie struggled to her feet, once again shaking herself, trying to shrug off the last vestiges of her dream. She jumped down from the couch. This was only one of the numerous things that had changed in Dottie’s life since the Hurricane, one of the few good things! Along with being alive and well and in one piece, she was now officially an Inside Dog. Dottie was not sure who benefited the most from this advent, but both her, and her Owner seemed to glean a great deal of comfort and satisfaction from the new arrangement! Dottie was now allowed, not only to spend the vast majority of her time indoors, lazing luxuriously on the settee, but was also, much to her amazement and delight, welcomed onto her Owner’s bed at night! The unspoken agreement had fallen into place almost immediately upon them taking up residence in the New Apartment. In fact it had happened the very first night. Dottie had been sleeping fitfully on the settee, trying to quell the tremors that seemed to plague her whenever night fell. All of a sudden she heard her Owner cry out, the cry seemed to reverberate within Dottie, striking an answering chord in her own soul. In an instant Dottie had bounded up the stairs and hurled herself onto her
