- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5A really lovely sweet book by an animal lover who runs a boarding kennel and cattery. Included are tales of her favourite four legged clients. I only wish that some of the photos of the animals were clearer.

This book is dedicated to all who passed through our front door during the past nearly half-century and brightened the lives of three generations of pet caregivers, be they human, canine, feline, fish, fowl, or rodent. Whether they walked, crawled, bounded merrily or were dragged into our office, they all contributed in a very positive way. We offer a special thank you to the owners of these memorable creatures. We are eternally grateful that you have entrusted us with your extended family. This book represents your gift to us.

The Why’s and Wherefores of These Tails
A little explanation is in order as to why I would put all of these stories, poems, and thoughts into book form. My family began a boarding kennel in 1963. This came after spending years boarding the dogs that they took to Dog Shows, breeding dogs, and just generally being in the Dog Business
. We purchased our first show dog, a collie by the name of Bruce, when I was a mere five years old.
So I suppose it’s safe to say that I grew up in a total dog environment, not to mention cats, birds, ducks, fish, hamsters, mice, bunnies, and horses. All of our pets co-habitated nicely and only on rare occasions were there any clashes.
Upon my parent’s retirement, my husband Ed and I purchased the kennel. Each decade brought more additions and improvements, until the original 50 dog kennel grew to over 200. Today, our son Todd owns it, since we’ve retired as well. The kennel continues to flourish, with the addition of Pet Suites, and even more pens. We’ve actually had customers who have boarded with us through three generations. It is gratifying to have developed trust that continues on after all of these years.
Since our retirement, I’ve collected all sorts of memorabilia, which has been patiently awaiting organization. Behind this always lurked the thought of sharing my stories with other dog lovers. Some of these memories are stored in my head
, and like my computer, memory is beginning to be limited with age. The time has come to write these stories, sort of run a back-up hard copy, before they are lost forever. Some of these pets truly need to be immortalized somehow.
As far as who this book is geared to, there are two answers. Of course, it’s for people who love dogs and cats, but a deeper target is
A) People who have boarded their pets, and maybe felt a little guilty about it.
B) People who have never had to board
their pets, and are proud of it.
For the A
people, I hope to reassure them that they have, indeed, shared their pets with people who have grown to love them like family. That sometimes the best thing you can do for a pet is to cave in to that pack mentality and allow them to be around others of their kind. And that loving your pet does not mean isolating him from humanity and canine companionship.
For the B
people, I hope to dispel the attitude that boarding is a jail sentence, and the pens are like death row
. This attitude can be relayed to your dog when you leave him, and because our pets are so in tune with our feelings and moods, they may, by osmosis, develop the same fear. Please don’t wait until your pet is old and decrepit to leave him. That is like taking Grandma from the nursing home to Grand Central Station! Introduce him to the fun
side of boarding while he is still a pup and believes everyone, four legged and two legged, loves him. They will.
So much for the soapbox. The main reason for this little book is that I just plain wanted to write it for the fun of it. After all, isn’t that the best part of having a pet-fun?
Many of the dogs pictured here don’t have a story attached. That doesn’t mean they weren’t worthy of one, only that their personalities were just plain sweet. Just because they weren’t quirky doesn’t mean we didn’t love them. They simply never did anything out of the ordinary-they were just lovable pooches. They are the kind that will always be a kennel owner’s dream. And how could anyone complain about that? Also, when pictures were unavailable, I used ones that were a close representation of the story. Apologies to the stars for the use of stand-ins.
Fittingly, the introduction to this book begins with one of the many letters and postcards we’ve received throughout the years; or should I say our guests have received, since that’s really who they were intended for. Just to keep the record straight, each of these was delivered to, sniffed by, and read to the appropriate dog. (Not necessarily the cats, as they couldn’t care less!) By doing so, I quelled my conscience into thinking it was permissible to then keep them to share one day in a book. After all, usually the dogs ate them anyway!
At any rate, I wish to thank little Jenny for the use of her PPSS. in the title. Its things like this that made our Dog Daze so memorable.

Not all of our guests were sweet, cuddly, and good-natured. Some of them were just plain cantankerous and grouchy, with a mile-long mean streak. As strange
