PREFACE
Kevin and I were lying on the grass on Belle Isle, right near the water. As we listened to the wind and the splashing water, he slipped a beautiful ring on my finger. He said, I know you are not going to marry me, but, I saw this ring a few weeks ago and I kept thinking about it, so I went back and got it. Since we had this picnic already planned, I knew that this would be the perfect time to give it to you. It’s beautiful, I screamed, I love it; thank you, thank you. I kissed him for a long time. Kevin said, I thought to myself that you might say yes, after all, we have been a couple for five years. What he didn’t know was that I had been keeping a secret from him. Even though I loved him more than I had ever loved anyone, I couldn’t marry him.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
CHAPTER ONE
THE BEGINNING
I shut the noisy alarm off, and slowly got out of bed, still half asleep. I had to get up earlier today because I had to run the hot comb through my hair before going to work. I had washed it last night when I got home from work. I was working the second shift now. As I was doing my hair, the doorbell rang, and before I could buzz them in, there was a loud knock on the door. It was strange that the caller had entered the building without my having to buzz them in. It angered me because the knocks were loud and in succession.
When I opened the door, there were a lot of policemen, maybe eight, with their weapons drawn. They shoved pass me, and started tearing up everything. I was crying and asking them what did they want, but nobody would answer me. It was obvious to me they were looking for something. I thought it had to be drugs because I had read in the paper about other innocent people being treated just as I was being treated now. Finally, a policeman came toward me with a clipboard in his hand and began asking me questions, like my name, did I live here, how long had I lived here etc. I asked him what this was about and what were they looking for because the other policemen were still wrecking my apartment. He asked where was Chuck and I told him that he was at work. He told me they were looking for Chuck for murder. I said oh no, you have the wrong person. He would never do that I said, you have the wrong guy. The policeman told me that he had been identified as the killer that he had been in a fight in a bar. I said, no that could not be because one of the officers had just walked out of the apartment with our 357 Magnum that was registered in my name, to keep in the house for protection. The policeman said I don’t know whose gun he had, but over thirty witnesses said that Chuck did the shooting.
Well, I went on to work, so sure that there had been some kind of mistake, but when I got home from work, there was a message on the answering machine, the worst message that I had ever heard. It was Chuck calling to tell me that he was in jail and to come down to the County Jail at 7 in the morning. It was already 4:30 A.M., so I took a bath and slowly got dressed. I couldn’t stop thinking, did he really kill someone. No, he was probably with someone who did, I thought.
It was finally time to go. I had an idea about where the place, the jail was, so I took off in that direction. I got lost several times but I finally made it there. It was the first time I had ever visited anyone in jail. I was terrified because the guard locked the door behind me. But the saddest thing was to see my husband looking back at me through a small window, looking sad and frightened like a small child. He asked me to get him an attorney and told me where his little stash was so that I could retain one. I was so totally naïve, that I went to the Yellow Pages and got the Criminal Attorney who had the largest ad. Still, I was so sure that Chuck had not done this ‘til I believed that this attorney could make everything right, straighten out this mess, and he’d be back home. Of course, that didn’t happen.
Since there were so many witnesses, the trial was long. I could not attend every session because I couldn’t get that much time off from work. However, during the time that I did attend the trial, I really got to know the man that I was happily married to for ten years and had lived with for four years before we got married. I learned that he was living a secret life. During the time that I was working, he was with his girlfriend. Not only was he seeing her at her home, she was also as familiar with my home as I was. When I was going to work, driving 60 miles, they were getting off from work.
It came out during the trial that Chuck had employed a lady named Kathy who later became his mistress. After the two worked together all day, they went directly to my house for dinner. Since I worked the afternoon shift, I cooked Chuck’s dinner before going to work each day. I didn’t have a clue that I was cooking for the two of them daily.
All of my neighbors knew, but nobody told me. I’m sure that nobody told me because Chuck was in the construction business and did work for all of the businesses in the neighborhood as well as the homeowners. Everybody knew him and liked him. He made them feel as if he was giving them a deal or doing them a favor in some way or another.
Me, on the other hand was always indoors. In the morning before going to work, I did what I had to do in the house, got my clothes and hair ready for work, and of course I cooked every day. When it was time to leave for the job, I just jumped into my car. I spoke if there was someone outside, but most of my neighbors worked days. When I got home from work, it was well past bedtime. Chuck was asleep most nights too. With this schedule, very few people knew me.
I discovered that the evening of the murder, Chuck and Kathy went to a bar in her neighborhood and were having a few drinks. Kathy was seated at the bar while Chuck was shooting a game of pool. Her former boyfriend or other boyfriend entered the bar and when he saw her he hugged her. That is how the argument started. Chuck reached between them to pay for the drinks and the other man who happened to be a much older man thought that Chuck was disrespecting him and pushed Chuck away from Kathy. The older gentleman was said to have reached into his pocket but his hand never came out of his pocket because Chuck shot him between the eyes and left the bar. Chuck did not know where he had shot the man or that he was dead when he left.
When Chuck was sentenced to 17 to 25 years for first-degree murder, I thought I was just having a bad dream. I kept slipping in and out of reality. I just could not believe that my little piece of happiness was being taken away from me. I couldn’t talk about this with anyone. I heard neighbors talking about it when I went to the laundry room in the basement of the apartment building that
