    Part 1: An Idyllic Life

    T omu! Tomu I got one !

    I heard the voice of my friend and stopped what I was doing to look over at her. She was bounding up out of the water, her jet-black hair was soaking wet and glistening in the bright sunshine. She was grinning, ear to ear, and her pearly white teeth shone in stark contrast to her dark brown hair. In her left hand, she held a long spear. A sharp blade was affixed to the long wooden staff, and impaled on the end of the spear was a large fish, still flailing about helplessly.

    That will taste great at the celebration tonight, I exclaimed. Great work, Nazad!

    Thanks! she replied, still grinning with pride. She walked to where I was standing and tousled my hair playfully.

    We had been down on the coast of our little island all morning, fishing for a meal for the celebration our village was preparing. Until now, neither of us had managed any luck. I had stationed myself with my fishing spear on the edge of a large rock, looking down into a clear pool of water a few feet below me. My friend Nazad had opted for a more direct approach and waded out into the sea, where she had stalked fish all morning. Now that she had managed to catch something, she was anxious to leave.

    Come on, Tomu, she groaned. Let's get out of here! My fish is large enough to cover both of us.

    I sighed. Yeah, you're probably right. I just hate returning to the village empty-handed. Especially tonight!

    I know, she cried, jumping excitedly. We'll climb out on those cliffs that overlook the eastern sea! There are some berry bushes that grow there and you can bring some back to the village!

    I nodded my head and smiled at her. The other villagers always loved the sweet berries, and we could stop there on our path back to the village. Besides, I could see that Nazad had her heart set on going back now, and I never could say no to such a beautiful girl. With that settled, Nazad carefully tied her fish to
