About this ebook

Greece, in the years of the 60’s. The country is slowly recovering from the wounds left by World War II. Transport as well as all other types of infrastructure are getting improved and the first signs of economic development become apparent.
The term “expat football player” sounded really exotic at those times as most teams were basically formed by players from the areas around the team home city with very few players added from other areas mainly for the big clubs. Within fifteen years though, all this was about to change, with clubs reaching to incredible sources looking for the enforcement of their squads! Some of those players only appeared for a single season in Greek football, and this book sheds light on the incredible football stories of those expats for the years 1960 to 1979 when the league was still run on amateur basis. Facts, trivia, biographies, human stories!

INTRODUCTION

Single Year Expats in Greek Football...

Greece, in the years of the 60’s. The country is slowly recovering from the wounds left by World War II. The transportation as well as all other types of infrastructure are getting improved and the first signs of economic development become apparent.

The above had already left their mark in Greek football with the inauguration of the 1st Division League (A Ethniki as it is known in Greek) as of autumn 1959. After three decades of the national league going through the childhood diseases, the time for a yearly national competition had come.

The term expat football player sounded really exotic at those times as most teams were basically formed by players from the areas around the team home city with very few players added from other areas mainly for the big clubs. Within the 60’s, the regulation on two-year ban for a player to be transferred was amended, as such, the big clubs who were financially stronger began hunting for the best talents available in the country, this is something that triggered the reaction of the affected teams and led to the ban of such transfers by the Sports General Secretary of the Regime of the Colonels time, Mr. Konstantinos Aslanidis. This decision forced the big clubs to look for the enforcement of their squads in an unexpected source, Latin America!

Until that time, only a handful of expat players had taken part in the 1st division. The pioneer of them was Gaetano Sallusto who played for PAOK in the inaugural season, however Sallusto was a Thessaloniki resident, he didn’t join PAOK as an expat. Other cases who also were knock-on effects of other activities were Brinek (Iraklis Thessaloniki)
