About this ebook

Rumi wrote: Love came and became like blood in my body.
Love came to Vincent Parmentola and became words on
these pages. Diary of a Holy Fool is a great series of spiritual
journeys filled with Love, Light, Poetry, the deepest Wisdom,
and a map to the best states to live in: Fulfillment and
Nirvana. Read and Reap.
- Michael Modzelewski, author of INSIDE PASSAGES and ANGELES CREST

In Diary of a Holy Fool, author Vincent Parmentola expresses his spiritual insights in a language rich in prose and poetry designed to capture the profound meaning of his phenomenal adventures while on the path of self-discovery. Inspired by the words of Jalaluddin Rumi, the great Persian poet (12071273), Parmentola traces his journey to find spiritual perfection and closeness to God. The path of enlightenment is a journey of the spirit and of discovering ones true self, the authentic being that abides at the very center of our consciousness and attempts to answer the eternal questions: Who am I? What is the purpose in my being here?

This is a journey of wonder and surprises consisting of peaks, valleys, and the occasional plateau, when nothing seems to be happening, at least to the conscious mind. Parmentola recalls a time when outward success as a fashion designer was a distracting camouflage for the discontent rumblinga rumbling that led to his discovery of Rumi and the beginning of his journey of self-discovery.

By sharing his exciting personal experiences and thoughts in Diary of a Holy Fool, Parmentola hopes to enliven, motivate, and encourage those with the desire to undertake their own journey of spiritual awakening.

    Gratitude

The following friends helped me prepare this book by critiquing and applauding what they read. Their many suggestions enabled me to create the various experiences that I share in this book.

My sister Ermelina, my greatest critic, who has forced me to walk the talk and be an authentic example of what I espouse.

Joyce Ananda Jarrett, whose editing brings clarity and impeccability to every page.

Victoria Ann Johnson, my dear, dear friend whose persistence and encouragement motivated me to birth and deliver this diary.

Many thanks to Maria Krajek for the beautiful front and back cover art design.

I am extremely grateful for the three most influential teachers who have illuminated my life.

Swami Satchidananda, who began my journey to discover self and God.

Brugh Joy, my main friend, mentor, and guide for twenty-five years. He helped remove the veils that separated me from knowing my true self and recapturing the authentic Vincent.

Rumi, an incredible mystic, poet, philosopher, and God-intoxicated lover who ennobles me by his words that bring greater clarity and meaning to my life.

    A Note from the Author

Because we are part of the universe higher consciousness is our birthright. We can realize this when we transcend the ordinary mind and experience an elevated state of awareness through the practice of meditation. In doing this, we release the ego’s perception as being separate from others and we begin to see ourselves as part of a broader cosmic identity. Once we achieve this higher level of consciousness, we then embrace the truth of our spiritual nature. Our mission in life is to maximize the potential of our consciousness to that state of awareness in which we can see that birth and death are indispensable to our creative process and help us to see the interconnectedness of all life.

I welcome you to the most exciting adventure of my life, recorded here in Diary of a Holy Fool.

    Genesis: A New Beginning

When does one actually begin a journey of the spirit? To cultivate the link with one’s spirit?

I had to decide this question when I started to write my Diary of a Holy Fool. When did it actually begin? And when did I realize I am holy and a fool? Was it when, as a young child of eight, I noticed a tear rolling over the cheeks of the Virgin Mother at Our Lady of Grace Church in Brooklyn, New York? Or did it begin when my mother died and I felt abandoned and had to face life alone at the age of seventeen? No, I think it commenced in 1950 while sitting in a tent in Korea and wondering what it was all about and what I was doing in that foreign land. And what part of me was left home in Yonkers with the family? Perhaps it began when, in a state of great depression, I almost succeeded in taking my life with a lethal blend of alcohol and sleeping pills… but a friend came by just in time to sober me up with a cold shower followed by a long walk along the Charles River in Boston. The note I had left behind read, I will not live in a world without love. Once again I had been disappointed by another saga of unrequited love.

It seems I always felt that no matter what life served me, I would ask, Is this all there is? Isn’t there more?

Surely, after being disappointed with my first sexual encounter at the age
