Author’s Note
Preface
I wrote this book because I felt the need to have a frank and honest platform for psychic abilities that steers its perception away from being something evil or inappropriate. Open the Mind Exercise the Soul is my attempt to begin this discussion. Psychic ability is about combining an open mind and the energy of the soul.
I want to acknowledge all of my clients, colleagues, family, and friends who have supported and encouraged my work over the years.
The names, details, and readings portrayed in this book have been changed to protect the privacy of clients.
Introduction
This book is to be used as a reference and guide to develop psychic skills. It is about the human experience of tapping into our unseen abilities and written from my point of view as a psychic over the years. I grew up Roman Catholic. While my religious beliefs do not contradict my spiritual journey and the truths that I have discovered, they are not all necessarily Catholic. I embrace the similarities in many belief systems. The contents have been derived from years of meditation and experience working with psychic abilities. My journey has been rewarding as I have developed these skills, for the power of these readings and the information received has changed lives and allowed great healing.
Everyone has it…
Everyone has these abilities inside of them even if they are dormant. My goal is to give you a reference and guide to develop them. This information is a result of years of observing the way I obtain energy and noticing my reactions to it. Since interpreting energy is the key to psychic readings, you will find that this is a learning experience as it continues to be for me. When you receive impressions, it can take time to understand them. You will find that personal life experiences play a part in our perceptions, and therefore in our interpretations.
Each of us is unique in our gifts. Confidence in our abilities is the result of practice and patience and allows us to grow. We often want immediate results, but this is not always possible. It is best to practice with a stranger interested in the same goals and people who are honest about their own abilities.
The responsibility…
It is important to note that learning about your abilities is a responsibility. Using these gifts appropriately is important because, once it is established that you are skilled, you will attract attention. Mature behavior and self-awareness are necessary, and careful use of your skills must be observed. Using your abilities as a form of manipulation is inappropriate and damaging to both the person receiving information and to you.
Psychic ability does not make us omniscient, but it creates sensitivity to the energy environment surrounding us. Distinguishing valid psychic energy from the projection of our desires is difficult. Many people will walk up to me and ask me to give them a quick psychic reading on a life altering situation placing me in a difficult position. Speaking off the cuff
will certainly create a problem for the person asking the question and for the psychic. The reason is because they are trying to force energy that is not necessarily there.
The Gift…
Finally, psychic ability is called a gift
. It is a gift because it is often unexpected and a joyous experience. There are times, however, when the gift is unwanted and a response is necessary to deal with a life changing situation. When this occurs, it is character and maturity that will dictate the best possible outcome. This book will help prepare you for these moments but will not give you all of the answers. It is designed to give you tools and insight.
My Desire….
Whether or not the concepts presented above have persuaded you to understand the case for psychic ability, it is my desire that you understand the perspective of those who do believe in it.

Chapter One
Sensing the Other Side
There is nothing wrong with your television set. Do not attempt to adjust the picture. We are controlling transmission. If we wish to make it louder, we will bring up the volume. If we wish to make it softer, we will tune it to a whisper. We will control the horizontal. We will control the vertical. We can roll the image, make it flutter. We can change the focus to a soft blur or sharpen it to crystal clarity. For the next hour, sit quietly and we will control all that you see and hear. We repeat: there is nothing wrong with your television set. You are about to participate in a great adventure. You are about to experience the awe and mystery which reaches from the inner mind to…The Outer Limits.
— Opening narration –The Control Voice –1960s
When I walk into a crowded room and prepare to do my work, I never know what to expect. My name is John Cappello. I am a psychic medium, and I work in the Outer Limits
. I have to keep an open mind and allow my soul’s energy to capture information and energy from beyond the physical
. The area in which I work is not science fiction. It is real life, and I want to share with you my experiences and give you my interpretations of the way psychic energy is manifested. The images and stories I receive using my psychic abilities are often unbelievable and fantastic, but they are all true. They represent a vast array of human experiences, and they connect all of us together. I have learned not to be astonished, but I remain amazed with the human spirit and the fascinating information that can be attained by using my psychic gifts. My work utilizes my entire body, and I have to be aware of even the slightest bits of information I receive in order to give an accurate account of a situation surrounding a client. The smallest, most insignificant detail might be the one thing that can change a life. The experience I am about to share with you is just one session of the hundreds I have been associated with during my career in the metaphysics community.
I was invited to attend a local event with other psychic mediums, and my part of the program was to begin in the early afternoon. This event was sponsored by one of the local metaphysical outlets in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, and all of the people involved were friends of mine. We decided to start a little early since most people had finished their lunch and were waiting for the next person to be on stage. Excerpts from this event and other sample readings follow.
Everyone has their own style of giving messages, and I am no different. My style is not any better or worse than other talented mediums, but I do offer my own philosophy as a guide. There is much said by skeptics about cold readings and a lack of evidence when communicating information to a client. It is impossible to please everyone, but I do my best to focus on individuals and remove any doubt about psychic ability and spirit communication. I focus on individuals and see energy around them. It’s a can’t miss
for me unless the receiver of the information simply does not accept the information or denies it.
I walked up in front of about sixty people and grabbed the microphone. My first thought was to introduce myself and ask the group if they had ever heard about me. There were a few people I knew since I was in my home market, but I had never seen most of them. It’s best that I do not know anything about a person when I do a reading. I made a few introductory remarks about myself and my work.
My work is very serious since it involves connecting with crossed-over loved ones and friends. It can be very sobering to obtain information about a devastating accident, disease, or a suicide. Seeing and experiencing another person’s grief, as a medium, is the least attractive of all the areas of my practice. The energy in the room felt a little low, so I thought I would break up the seriousness of the crowd by making up a corny joke. My appearance was after a couple of other mediums, so I complimented them by saying, I am honored to follow such distinguished mediums. Their talent is very rare and their work is well done!
The joke did not even get a groan! No one laughed or made any kind of sound.
I knew it was time to give up any ideas of being a standup comedian and remain in a field I knew. My next move was to accept the fact that this group was very serious and meant business. They had expectations, and they demanded I deliver. Following other mediums who had already demonstrated their abilities was okay with me and being in a demanding crowd did not add pressure or stress. I was simply trying to lighten the mood with a joke because people in grief need to be able to have some relief. This group was no nonsense, so I had to win them over with good readings and solid evidence of information being received from beyond the physical
. The first person I chose to read was a case in point. She was a person in grief but did not appear very interested in the first person who made himself known to me. Her father came in and wanted to share information about his life and his relationship with her. Once it was clear she did not want to hear from him, I began to look at other spirits around her. Her father was over her right shoulder where I expected him to be. When a spirit appears to me, they often just show their head or something significant to the person receiving the reading. It is not my job to know why they are showing me something specific. I am just to report the information.
Another spirit was behind her in an area where I normally do not see relatives, so I asked her about a young man she may have known who died unexpectedly. She would not validate it, but the information was very clear. The young man was showing me that he had problems with his neck. I asked myself, Why is he being so specific about his neck?
But he was adamant that it was important. There is always a reason for a spirit to communicate a particular movement, but it may not be apparent at first. Again, no positive response, so I looked in another place. To her left just off her shoulder (the area where I notice friends or people of approximately the same age) stood a woman. This woman was a friend that had recently passed. Once I mentioned this person, I immediately received acknowledgement. She began to show emotion since this friend was dear to her. The information was correct, and she was happy to know her friend was safe and doing well in spirit. It was interesting because once she started acknowledging information, other people began showing up. My subject was sitting next to a man who was at the gallery simply for support, but his mother suddenly appeared to me. She said to tell him, He was no trouble growing up,
and she thanked him for being a good son. Apparently,
