      Preface—Author’s Introduction

      Ever since adolescence, I remember searching for that special someone. No matter where I went or what I was doing, I was always keeping my eyes open for my possible soul mate. Those were exciting and delightful times, often filled with anticipation, confidence and hopefulness. But to be honest with you, there were also times of disappointment, confusion and low self-esteem.

      As I look back over those years, I can now see the different paths or choices that I made in search for my soul mate. Many of these paths were well trodden by the norms of the crowd, while a few were reckless attempts at making my own way through uncharted territories. Many memories have come and gone since then, leaving residual thoughts and emotions that are both good and bad. Today, I can see how those experiences have shaped and formed me, and perhaps in some cases even determined my destiny.

      After many relationships and a divorce, I found myself once again standing on the outskirts of this old familiar search, with all its mixed memories, thoughts and feelings. I realized that the old paths I took were incomplete and could not be trusted once again. This new journey must not be a repeat of the past, but a do-over that would allow me to create new, fresh and wholesome experiences. I must learn to journey with others, with whom I could confide and process each step of the way. I would also need to invite two notable guides to help direct me through the challenges and snares associated with this new Sacred Journey.

      Like the ritual experiences of a religious sect that are set apart with reverence and care, so I must honor my Sacred Journey with its own rituals of self-awareness and dance of relationships. I must set apart each step that I take on this journey with the respect and care of a high shaman priest. I must also learn how to protect and defend each new experience that I encountered from those of my past, with their demanding memories of disappointment, disgrace and hopelessness. On this new journey, I must learn how to create new memories that will overshadow the old ones with honor, love and joy. Although I’ve had similar journeys before, this one will be different because I chose not to travel it alone, but with my chosen travelers that I’ve come to know as the Band of One.

      The Sacred Journey is an allegory, reflecting upon the insights of life that will help guide you as you search for your soul mate, or rediscover the promises of love and happiness with the one you are with now.

      It is my deepest desire that this unique allegory of truths will resonate within your own personal life, and provide you new avenues of resolution from past encounters and disappointments. May you always know that wherever you are on your Sacred Journey, you are never alone, as we, the Band of One, will always be with you.

      PROLOQUE—Story Introduction

      I think it is true that at some point in life, most people go on a special journey in search for their soul mates. A person hopes to find that special partner who meets their ideal image and possesses the right kind of qualities that will provide new adventures for a successful life. They dream of a soul mate who will eagerly meet their personal needs and whose personality blends with theirs like a hand in a glove. It’s the perfect relationship, the perfect couple, with the perfect future. They call each other their prince or their princess. Their love will last forever, and their passion will never die.

      This is a noble dream that most people share but few will ever realize. Finding our soul mate is often left up to chance, luck, or opportunity. Some roll the dice and take what they get, only to be disappointed later, when they find their soul mate were not as compatible or didn’t possess the qualities that they had hoped for. The person who once was a soul mate is now a stranger, with different values, goals, and needs. Their noble dreams gradually dissolve into disappointment, or for some, into nightmares that may haunt them for a lifetime.

      Finding your soul mate is not a myth or a fantasy. It is not some romantic notion that happens only in movies. It is a beckoning of the desires of your heart. This beckoning is the natural calling that motivates us to pursue our heart’s desire in search of our soul mate. Finding your soul mate is a noble dream, and I believe takes you on a Sacred Journey that will bring happiness and wholeness to your life.

      As with all dreams and goals, they just don’t happen by themselves. They must be thought through and well planned, with specific steps of action. The search takes discipline, courage, and personal integrity. The decisions made on this journey will impact you for a life time. The nature of this search is a calling that permeates the physical, emotional, psychological and spiritual dimensions of your being.

      The purpose of this book is to help guide you as you respond to your calling and accept the Sacred Journey. You will learn new insights about life and discover the path that will lead you to your soul mate.
