CHAPTER ONE
The explosion
He decided that he wouldn’t stop until all 13 accused were dead or someone stopped him. This was the promise he made to Kathy! Freemen walked out to his car and waited for the Detroit police and fire department to come. It wasn‘t the thrill he was after it was the recognition. Since it was his first bomb, he wanted to see what procedures were, who showed up and what they looked like. The fire trucks came rolling in. Right behind them was the police.
Jay rolled his window down so he could listen to what they were saying. One of the police officers asked if Detective Hershey was there yet from the DPD? Everyone shook his or her heads no. He watched the firefighter‘s spray water on the small fires. Jay did not realize the bomb that he made was so powerful. Not that he felt bad. Detective Hershey had just arrived on the scene. Detective Hershey is a big black man about 240 pounds and physically fit.
He climbs out of his car and says what crazy mother are we dealing with now! The sergeant just shook his head no and shrugged his shoulders. Jay was watching Detective Hershey real close. He had slid down into his seat, so he could watch as long as he could. Detective Hershey decided to call the FBI. As he was calling the FBI Jay was listening. Detective Hershey said we have a bomb situation send somebody out to the mall.
The fire department put the fire out. There were ambulances and fire trucks all over the place. Lights were flashing and you could hear sirens in the background. Jay stayed low in the car. He could not hear much though he wanted to hear the total dead. This was important to Jay.
Detective Hershey had come walking back out to the car and said it looks like 14 people dead and 20 injured. The sergeant looked at Detective Hershey and said did you find anything. Detective Hershey said no, nothing. I will have to take all of these bodies to the morgue and have an autopsy done. We will have to go from there. Who ever did this is a smart son of a bitch! No one can find shit! A large group of people came out of the mall.
A man from the group climbed into the car next to Jay and started the engine and started to pull away. Jay took the opportunity to flee the scene. Jay started his little car and drove away. He slid out of their unnoticed. Like he did not even exist. Jay headed home to plan his next move. Jay arrived home like nothing ever happened. When he was climbing out of his car, his neighbor Ms. Smith said hello.
Just like any other normal day Jay said hello back. Jay walked in the house and sat down in the living room chair. He turned the TV on to watch the news. It did not take long for the news to come on. The news broadcaster came on with a special news report. A helicopter had arrived at the mall where Jay planted his bomb. The newswoman was going on about how 14 had died and about 20 were injured in the explosion.
The police had no leads at this point and were still working on the scene. The newswoman said they would continue to cover this tragedy and report back with any updates. Jay stood up and walked over to the television and shut it off. He stood there for a moment just shaking his head. Jay decided it was time to take a shower and go to bed. He had to get up for work the next morning.
Back at the scene Detective Hershey was going crazy because he could not find any evidence at the scene. The only thing he had was what killed those 14 people. The coroner’s office called Hershey and said they did not die from the explosion. They died from a 50 caliber steel ball. The coroner said to Hershey that the 14th victim did not have a steel ball in him. He has an entry and exit wound.
Hershey said thank you and hung up the phone. He was thinking to himself; he says that’s just great two for the price of one. He stood there thinking 13-50 caliber steel balls. He stayed in a few more moments trying to make a connection when a reporter approached him. He turned to the woman and said the only thing I have is the bomber used 13 steel balls inside his bomb. They are 50 calibers in diameter. Detective Hershey asked if anyone had any information if they would please contact the FBI, himself or the police department. Thank you, he said to the reporter and turned to walk away. The fire department had everything under control and had cleaned up their equipment.
The FBI showed up and had conducted their investigation with no luck either. Detective Hershey decided to go home and get some rest. Hershey had all these thoughts going through his mind. Why would someone do this here in this peaceful community? Jay was lying at home in bed missing his wife Kathy. She was all Jays could think about. Jay and Kathy had a love so special that most people could not understand.
They never argued, fought or hit each other. They always talked out their problems with respect and honor. Jay and Kathy were very wealthy people and did not show it. All of his wealth was from inheritance from his grand father and his father. Jay had just over 20 million in cash and the ranch and his small home in the city. When Jay left home when he was young he wanted to paddle in his own pond sort of speaking.
He wanted to make it on his own with no help from family. There were only a handful of people that knew of Jay’s wealth. All Jay knew was he was not going to quit. He missed Kathy so much. Jay turned over and grabbed Kathy’s pillow and her nightgown and held them tight. They both still had her scent on them. This helped Jay fall asleep. Jay began to cry. He missed her so much. He cried himself to sleep.
This was Jay‘s first bomb, and he could not believe his success. Jay woke up and went downstairs to turn the TV on. He watched the whole news report, and nothing was said about the bomb at the mall. Jay was surprised. It was not like he was after publicity or attention. However, he was surprised that there was no coverage. Detective Hershey was up and on the move. Hershey called the FBI to see if they turned up any evidence. They had nothing new yet.
Hershey hung up the phone and decided to drive to the coroner’s office. He was hoping to get lucky and find more evidence.
Jay stood at his door thinking maybe he should drive his other car just in case someone noticed it. He opened up the garage and pulled out his baby, a1969 Ford Mustang Mach 1. Jay had got this car from his father when his father passed. Jay loved it so much he just kept fixing it up with new parts as needed. Jay climbed into the car and went to work. Jay was a day custodian at the local high school. He was working overtime today to clean up after a charity auction.
Jay was a quiet man who kept to him self most of the time. Everyone there loved him. Jay always went out of his way to help staff and students. He even changed flat tires when needed. Last year Jay was nominated employee of the year for his efforts. Jay got to work and acted as if nothing ever happened. Jay walked in the receiving room, and his coworker Harold said good morning to Jay. Jay said good morning back. Harold says I see you got the hot rod out. Jay smiled and said yes I need to drive it more.
It‘s not doing the car or me any good sitting in the garage. Harold says that sure is a beautiful car. Jay says thank you to Harold and quickly change the subject to work. Jay asked if there was anything-special going on today. Harold said no. Just your typical auction clean up. It should be a nice and quiet Saturday. Jay says that sounds good I will catch up with you later Harold and walked into the school.
Meanwhile back at police headquarters Detective Hershey was frustrated because he could not get any more evidence to work with. The case was getting cold quick. Hershey stood up and decided to go downstairs to the gym to work out his frustrations. Hershey started punching the heavy bag and was thinking about the mall and what stores were nearby the explosion. They were mostly women‘s clothing stores, a jewelry store, and a known coffee shop where most of the employees got their morning coffee.
It still did not make any sense to Hershey. He just hit and punched the bag until he fell to the floor exhausted. He yells out loud Motherfucker! Jay was having a great Saturday. Everyone was clueless that it was him that caused the explosion at the mall. At the end of the day Jay walked into the receiving room and said to Harold to have a great weekend and shook his hand like old friends. Harold said you do the same Jay and smiled.
As Jay got to the door Harold said how about we switch cars for the weekend and smiled. Jay pretended to throw the keys at Harold but did not let go. Jay said not a chance Harold. I know how you drive to remember! Harold smiled and said have a good weekend, and Jay walked out. He climbed into his car and started the engine to let it warm up for a second or two and then revved the engine up to irritate Harold. Jay watched the receiving room door open and Harold gave him the finger. Jay laughed to himself and slowly drove away. He waved to Harold as he went down the driveway.
Detective Hershey got himself up off the floor and went into the shower room to clean up. He headed back upstairs and sat at his desk. Detective Hershey worked alone he did not like having a partner. They only seemed to get in the way or die around him. The lieutenant was always on his case about getting a new partner. As Hershey sat there thinking about the bomb he decided to go back to the mall and search some more.
Detective Hershey arrived at the mall. He got out and walked and slowly looking around. He spotted a security camera. He said in a low voice what the fuck! I thought security did not have cameras. He walked down to the security office and started yelling at the security guard. The security guard said Detective we don‘t have security cameras nearby. The owner here feels it‘s a waste. He would rather have more security guards.
Detective Hershey says how do you explain the camera hi up on the wall in front of the coffee shop, Jewelry store area. The guard stood there clueless. Detective Hershey says, please come with me. I will show it to you. Detective Hershey and the security guard walked down by the coffee shop and jewelry store. Detective Hershey says sees the camera. The security guard says I‘ll be damned. Someone must have installed that without the mall‘s
