Preface
You are on the threshold of entering medical practice. Congratulations! You have been anticipating this great moment for some time.
Halt! Before you even start to look around, it is urgent that you pay attention to a number of things —considerations that are as important as, or more important than, which office space to rent or which group to join. For, you see, you are not applying for a summer job, or something to do short-term. You are about to make a life-long decision, which can become complicated unless you do a lot of advance thinking.
It involves a lot of introspection, some of which you may have already done. Where you would like to practice. Which hospital(s) you might want to be near. What kind of patients you want. How you want to be viewed by your patients. And so on.
These items might seem superfluous at this moment, but let me assure you that they are absolute necessities if you want to have a long and enjoyable professional career. Missteps that occur (some accidental, some circumstantial and some by hurried choices) often take long times to remedy.
It is important to learn good habits early, then you won’t have to spend time in unlearning the bad habits when you become busy.
Thus, by preparing properly, you will be Practicing for Practice.
So enjoy this book, take seriously its recommendations —and don’t hesitate to consult with practitioners whom you highly respect and would like to emulate. Medicine is known for its ubiquitous mentoring of younger physicians by more senior physicians. And some day, you can help younger members of the profession as they come along.
