    Jesus Christ the Person:

    A Sociological Reconstructing for Atheists and Believers

    by Nikolai Vladimirov

    Nikolai Vladimirov is a professor of sociology at the Moscow State University of Culture and Art. He is a specialist in the sphere of personal spiritual development. In his works A person in two dimensions, A problem of person in sociology, Spiritual aspects of a person’s socialization, After the socialism, Healing by disgrace or about the use of abasement of Russia, and others, he uses a socio-spiritual method of analysis (elaborated by him) that supposes the social perception of the invisible, hidden, transcendental sides of reality. From this position, he investigates Jesus Christ’s person, which gave Vladimirov a possibility to open new, yet unknown meanings of Christ’s teachings to see Him through the eyes of modern man. The result of his investigation is the book Jesus Christ the Person.

    The book is illustrated with the best pictures available of the Savior. The author hopes that it will be both a scientific and a popular book, a holiday and a gift for the readers.

    Author’s Note

    If you take such a topic, first of all you must explain, why? Is it necessary to create the image of Christ yet again and interpret it once more? Why add one more work devoted to Jesus—maybe not a perfect one—to the great number of books about Him?

    There are some good reasons for it.

    The first is an incontestability of the exciting fact that two thousand years ago God-man Jesus Christ was born and lived in ancient Palestine, creating His word and work. The human-God, the Ideal, perfect, a specimen by which—according to His Intention—we must be and live.

    The truth of this event is confirmed by so many documents and arguments, so much proof exists showing that it should not be dismissed. Especially, parallel with these exists other proof.

    From ancient times to the present, phenomena that can only be explained by the action of some mysterious forces indicated different appellations and the name God was among them. Manifestation of this unknown hidden reality are varied and different: good or evil spirits; angels of all kinds; sages and saints endowed with the gift of healing; appearances and messages of Our Lady that were confirmed in documents or eyewitness accounts; stigmata; chrism-shedding icons, etc. The list can be continued on and on. Then it must be a Sentient Being from whom all these are emanating, source of sources, the Almighty Creator.

    The arguments of scientists are very interesting on this account. Many of them confirm that it is impossible to explain any fundamental laws of physics or cosmology without the concept of the divine beginning. Many are persuaded today that there is no chance of understanding the world without the notion and fact of the existence of a Creator. From our part, we add some personal experience to these phenomena. We hope that readers will find it interesting, for it represents the experience of a former atheist, who made the difficult journey to discovering the transcendental.

    But if that is the case, and if He—the Maker of all existence, including the man himself—exists, then it is quite possible to assume He had to reveal himself to mankind in a form, appearance, and with a conduct that people would be able to understand. He had revealed himself in order to look at His handiwork, to compare His plan with reality and to give a lesson about life. His teachings had to contain both sides of knowledge: earthly and heavenly norms of behavior, which can draw them move near to His ideal.

    Obviously, a long time before His First Advent He must have given His commandments to people and called upon them to keep them. There have been many incarnations and manifestations of God during the history of the world. Of course, the most significant one was an appearance of God to Moses and the Ten Tablets given mankind. Each of them brought very creative energy and contributed to the development of human civilization. It is also indisputable that their efforts were not enough. Spiritual life suffered all the time and lagged behind; the material sinful side of life squeezed it out, fettering people with worries. And then, God emoted one part of the Holy Trinity in the Person of Christ to give His most impressive and effective lessons to people. That is why the Person of God-man Jesus is very stirring, enigmatic, breathtaking, and instructive in the New Testament. And that is why the experience of recognizing even some appearance characteristics of the Person, of the Ideal, the Almighty, the Perfection are very interesting for us.

    But from what position is this aim reachable? It seems to us because we are dealing with the person of God-man, the method of analysis must include both the divine (spiritual) and the human (social). And the Socio-Spiritual method does include both.

    Socio-Spiritual Vision is the social perception of the invisible, hidden, and transcendental sides of reality.

    Such a vision of the world is found already in many ancient literary sources that have come down to us. With the progress of human knowledge, this vision has become more distinct and complete.

    According to this point of view, man appeared with the direct or indirect participation of the Creator, which lit the spark of God in him, having given him a soul and reason and will. The range of notions about the creation of man is huge. I will not numerate them here. But they all concur that man is some likeness of God.

    That is why the question of the body, the outward appearance of God-man Christ, is one of the most important in our work. For through this appearance, through the face of Jesus, the Lord Himself, is looking at us. Painters of different epochs were inspired as they strove to capture the image of God on canvas. Readers will find the best of these pictures on the pages of this book and can form their own opinion of the Creator of the Universe.

    Here are some different Socio-Spiritual notions about the make-up of a human being. For example, according to Christian teaching, a person has a body, soul, and spirit. And the majority of religions believe that the life of humans goes in a cycle: a mortal body and then an immortal soul returning to the Lord after a person dies.

    The Socio-Spiritual method interprets that at the moment of his birth, a man is provided with a divine substance (soul) as an element of the Most High, which revives his flesh. It becomes apparent through the talents and abilities of the man. The analysis of them characterizes the divine substance itself.

    But if it is right in regards to a mortal, this method is especially useful for analyzing the person of God-man Jesus Christ because the New Testament says that He and Lord are one. Therefore, our research must include a description of spiritual virtues of the Savior and also His earthly virtues. Then, as with any sociological work, it must describe the process of His socialization, i.e., the peculiarities of Jesus’ assimilation to the social experience. This usually occurs during the child-adolescent-youth years of a person’s life. It is known that the information on just this period of Jesus’ life is the scantest. Nevertheless, the accounts of the evangelists shed quite a bit of light on the process of socialization (if it is possible to say that) of the boy from Nazareth.

    The next stages of analyzing a person are approached in different ways by sociologists. For example, by analyzing the functions or roles played by someone in society, by viewing the person and his social environment and so on. But, when using the above-mentioned method, it is more important to comprehend the feelings of the person, his way of thinking, and the level of knowledge, which he drew from the Higher Source, God’s wisdom, and, finally, his mission on earth. This mission given from above, might be carried out or not, and the whole social potential, the whole drama of the person, lies in that or.

    But isn’t it these interesting questions that allow us to see the hero of our book as alive?

    The last stage is the analysis of Jesus after Нis crucifixion (the resurrection of Jesus is considered an established fact today).

    Thus, the Socio-Spiritual method determined the next main milestones in analyzing Christ as a person:

    1. the period before He was born;

    2. His socialization;

    3. the reconstruction of His physical appearance and His language;

    4. His emotions;

    5. His way of thinking;

    6. the level of knowledge He gave people;

    7. His mission and deeds; and

    8. His posthumous
