      Getting up from my chair and as good as staggering from it, I was almost overwhelmed by the good weight and sense of assurance with where I was heading with this book you are reading. I came to a halt on the floor in the passageway with another book open in hand. It was early afternoon on Friday, March 15, 2013.

      During the previous hour, in a welcoming and frequented café setting, I had sat down for a totally unexpected God-appointed time with a good friend. The way it unfolded, lunch never happened!

      I was with my cobber (that’s friend or mate in the Australian vernacular), as I call Mark (who arrived with his wife, Bev, and their two boys from South Africa at the beginning of 2010).

      During our conversation, Mark encouraged me in how he and our other brother and mate, Lynton, sensed the Lord’s hand on the things I write. I went on to share with Mark for the first time about how I was well into having started writing this book. I had explained that of the number of books I had in progress in preparation for publishing, when I sought the Lord as to which one should I get published first, the Holy Spirit conveyed in no uncertain terms that Outside the Camp was it. I then shared with Mark some of what was in it.

      On hearing where I was going with this book, Mark told me how only recently, Lynton had handed him the R. T. Kendall book The Scandal of Christianity, which I had never heard of. R. T.’s name alone was enough to make me sit up and take notice; I already owned other books of his. But when Mark told me the title of the last chapter of R. T.’s book, I was floored! Chapter 15 is Outside the Camp.

      Deep within, I was God-knowingly sure there was a connection and relationship between where I was going with my book and what Kendall had written. Not only was I stirred by just having heard that R. T. had a chapter with the same title as this book, but I also knew I needed to read that chapter.

      A short time following, I sat on my chair at home with R. T.’s book after Mark handed it over to me and after Lynton handed it to Mark. I intentionally only read that last chapter of R. T.’s book. It was as I began to read that I started to stagger from my chair.

      As you read Outside the Camp, you will quite possibly begin to marvel with me at our God’s resolve in re-landscaping and rebuilding his church his way, with the plumb line of his cornerstone.

      Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit, says the LORD (Zechariah 4:6).

      Above all—far above all—I thank and praise the living, holy, and righteous One for his love, faithfulness, and extraordinary encouragement. Truly and assuredly, for the humble in heart and contrite in spirit, He takes the clay, which is marred, and saves it from going to ruin and waste (from a song I penned in 1994 and adapted from Jeremiah 18:1-11). What amazing grace; what a glorious Lord!

      Blessed be your glorious name, and may it be exalted above all blessing and praise. You alone are the LORD. You made the heavens, even the highest heavens, and all their starry host, the earth and all that is on it, the seas and all that is in them. You give life to everything, and the multitudes of heaven worship you. (Nehemiah 9:5-6)

      God has made those for whom I mention here (and those whom I may fail to make worthy mention of) valuable, precious, and dear friends, brothers, and sisters (both natural and spiritual) and fellow soldiers.

      To the most precious gift I have (after Jesus and my salvation) in my wonderful wife, Tina Maree—you are beautiful, altogether lovely, and amazing. How blessed can a man be? I love you deeply! Thank you with all my heart for your love, faithfulness, devotion, sacrifice, encouragement, and support of this, your man. The Lord bless you richly and eternally!

      To our magnificent children (mentioned and not mentioned) and their blessed children (our grandchildren, to date), Sage and Dayna (Ziva); Hannah and Adrian (Andrew, Isabelle, and ?); Rebekkah Bek (Amelia); Samuel; and our spiritual son, Michael (father of Andrew)—what a tribe, and what grace is this that you have filled our lives with such love, joy, learning, and even heartache.       To Dad and Mum—blessed to be with our Lord Jesus and aware of just how truly great is God’s grace in him. Thank you so much for loving me and instructing me.

      To Lyn and John (for your loving and crucial support), Jenny (in your glorified home), and Mal (bro)—thank you for the love that you have all shown and the encouragement (naturally and prophetically) you have given me throughout my life. May the Lord bless you abundantly for it!

      To Sir John, Rob, Rex, Fran, Princess Pat, Trish, Lynton and Amanda, Jenny, Leicester and Pauline, Chris and Heather, Ray and Anne, Dave, David, Peter and Colleen, and Mark and Bev for your real (genuine) friendship, fellowship, prayer, and service in walking in love with us through thick and thin—what a blessing you have been and are!       To the spiritual children who have come (and sometimes gone) and with whom we have shared, grown, prayed, and cried—may God, our Father, pour out his love and peace on you in Jesus, your Savior and Lord.

      To the church—the members of Jesus’ body—with whom we have traveled, are yet to, and will on that great day, May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit (Romans 15:13).

      To the great cloud of witnesses (Hebrews 12:1) on the edge of their seats (as it were, without a drop of anxiety) and cheering us on, marveling at the unfolding glory of the Lord, for which they with grace and by faith pioneered the way in following the pioneer and perfecter of our faith (Hebrews 12:1)—I look forward to spending eternity in Jesus’ glory with you.

      To the angels, who in their love for and devotion to the Lord have ministered and minister God’s unfailing love and grace to me—thank you so much, my (and the church’s) precious and often undetected fellow servants (Hebrews 1:14; Revelation 19:10, 22:9).

      Introduction

      Many are the influences upon us personally and corporately throughout life from the word go! Remarkable also is the impact of discovering the unique character and value of each of our lives.

      To say the least, God’s kingdom, creation, handiwork, and sovereignty are, from sunrise to sunrise, astonishing to the point of being hard to believe.

      We are yet still awaking, as the Lord’s people, to the seamless relationship and closeness that exists between the spiritual and natural realms.

      At this beachhead for the church as described in this book, where we are as his chosen people and go in the dawning of the day at hand, we need courage, courage, and more courage. Yes, Be strong and very courageous (Joshua 1:7).
