    THE YEAR 1932

    The Great Depression was in full force. The stock crashed on October 29, 1929. It was also the year most members of the Riverside High School class of 1950 were born.
    A brief look back reveals what our great country, and the world, looked like. As the year 1932 began Herbert Hoover was the President. He would lose the election in November to Franklin D. Roosevelt. President Roosevelt would serve as president during most of the formative years of our young lives. He served through the Great Depression and World War II. He died in 1945 and was succeeded by Harry S. Truman.

    Some National and International events, in the world of politics and sports:

    Adolph Hitler was coming to power, the atrocities he committed, war in Europe and WWII, were on the horizon.
    The Walt Disney Art School is created
    The tenth Summer Olympic Games open in Los Angeles
    New York Yankees win the World Series (so this is news)
    The Indianapolis 500 winner is Fred Frame with a speed of 104.144 MPH
    This is a peek into the year of 1932. There was certainly a great deal of exciting, powerful, and spectacular events during the year. Strictly from an unbiased point of view none of these events matched the birth of all those little babies that were destined to be the Class of 1950!

      TO THE CHILDREN, GRANDCHILDREN AND FUTURE GENERATIONS OF

      THE CLASS OF 1950

      As you read the following pages you will get a peek into the history of the great township of Riverside and the lives of your parents and grandparents. Both the town and your parents and grandparents are the foundation of what made America the greatest country on earth.

      They learned the lessons of hard work, character, love of country, and family from their parents. These priceless attributes they passed on to you.

      Be proud of them. Never forget them. You come from strong stock.

      PROLOGUE

      In the fall of 1946 a group of young teenagers began a new journey in their lives. They were about to enter high school. The time period September 1946 and June 1950 was sandwiched between the end of World War II and the beginning of the Korean War.

      There was a television show that would grace the airways in the 1970’s called Happy Days. The story line was that of high school kids and their travails and triumphs. The country was in a time of peace and prosperity. Young boys were discovering girls. Cheerleaders were discovering football players. They all hung out at their favorite ice cream parlor and played the pin ball machine. Listened to the juke box. Five cents a song. Six plays for a quarter. High school proms. A magical time.

      Well guess what. These young people in the fall of 1946 got to live that life. It was a reality. They did all of those things, and more. It was not some fictitious television program that would arrive decades later depicting that time frame.

      Riverside High School was indeed a magical place for these young people during the four years that they were there. They were taught how to deal with life that would follow. Not only educated academically they were taught a great deal more. Morals. Solid family values. How to be good citizens. How to be part of the solution and not a part of the problem.

      Now in the autumn of their life they still get together regularly. Their last reunion, a two day event at the Jersey Shore, celebrated 60 years from their graduation date in June 1950.

      They still get together twice a year for a reunion luncheon. Always remembering those magical years from a time long ago. Celebrating life. Laughing, joking, teasing, remembering old stories, and of course some crying. If you would like to know more about this special group of proud citizens that grew up in that special place known as Riverside New Jersey, attended Riverside High School, and cheered for the Rams then read on.

      PART I

      THE EARLY HISTORY OF RIVERSIDE

      The great depression was in its infancy just as the 1930’s were beginning. It was at that same time a group of infants were arriving in the small town of Riverside, New Jersey. Some eighteen years later these young people would become graduates of the class of 1950.

      During those formative years they witnessed some of the major events of the 20th Century. To name but a few—the Great Depression, World War II, dropping the atomic bomb, the end of the war, the GI Bill of Rights which changed our country. It provided the opportunity for a college education, homeownership, and the creation of a large middle class. The farmlands surrounding Riverside were changed. Changed from growing vegetables to growing houses. Developments such as Millside Farms and Levittown were sprouting up all over.

      Riverside was typical of countless small towns across the country. The backbone of our great country. Hardworking people. Family was the heart and soul of the town. Law abiding. They did not look for handouts from their government. Spiritual and religious people of faith.

      In 1930 there were eight churches, of all religions,
