Introduction
. . . For those who hunger and thirst after righteousness…
The writing of this book is a result of obedience to the request of the Lord. The simple vision was for every chapter to read as a transcript of the sermons I originally shared in a teaching series called ‘Appetite for the World’ in the summer of 2010.
I am not a skilled writer but a lover of the word of God, who unreservedly relies on the Holy Spirit. I am so dependant on his guidance that I don’t even attempt to speak publically without copious notes that read like chapters in a book. I am also a lover of his people and cannot bear to see godly lives overcome by the temptations of this world or renewed mindsets lead unwittingly into the paths of bondage.
As the Appetite for the World Series progressed, I began to realise just how much there was to take in. So much to understand, and so little time to get to grips with the changes and adjustments that we as believers may have to make concerning what appears to be, an escalating appetite for worldly delicacies. I was also increasingly aware of resistance to the messages and during this period witnessed a few members of my church leave. Why? Sadly due to certain truths and commandments that they were unwilling to embrace. This only served as an encouragement to continue exposing the darkness.
John 3: 19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. 21But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.
It is my hope for you that by reading this book you gain some insight or perhaps even a deeper understanding of the darkness that now covers the world. I mean this not as a healthy way to partake in it, but to possess the knowledge needed in order to become an alien to it because of its deception.
The last days are upon the body of Christ and many believers are falling into the trap of trying to mix and match. A little bit of the light and a little bit of the darkness simply means that you have not come out of the world. This book will help you identify deception.
Have I covered everything you need to be warned about? Probably not. I have aimed to tackle the areas often overlooked, the struggles not normally considered to be issues.
You may take umbrage to some of the things you read or hear. My advice would be for you to compare the scriptures to the teaching. If the scriptures do not support this book then you’re okay to not make any changes. If the scriptures do align to my points then it’s wise to continue reading, listen and to ultimately live.
Keep hold of the word of God. This book aligns itself with the truth and will bear witness to the truth.
John 8:32… And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

Do you have an Appetite
for the World or the Kingdom of God?
August 2010
2 Timothy 4:9-10… Do thy diligence to come shortly unto me: For Demas hath forsaken me, having loved this present world, and is departed unto Thessalonica; Crescens to Galatia, Titus unto Dalmatia . . .
I have to interrupt the current teaching series on ‘Why we have to believe the scriptures’ in order to start a new mini one.
I would like to ask you all a question. Do you have an appetite for the World or for the Kingdom of God? I have to ask this because the weather is getting warmer. (This series was started during the summer of 2010.)
What’s the weather got to do with anything?
Well from what I’ve noticed, the climate changes can affect us and our behaviour.
The police say that crime increases during the summer months especially amongst young people. Professionals believe that it could be down to the fact that more youngsters are out on the streets, most being on school holidays with nothing to do. Some for example are out because of boredom.
They believe that the best way to keep crime down amongst youngsters during the long summer break is by keeping them busy. The perfect solution would be to enrol them into summer schools that encourage them to participate in sports and leisure activities. As long as their minds are occupied with positive and rewarding things to do, getting into trouble won’t happen as often.
Now if crime increases then so does the pressure to the sinful nature. Desires and lusts increase. I note this next point from a pastoral perspective. Is sin harder to control in the summer than in the winter?
Heat appears to distract us. Our moods are generally better on the whole but our spiritual and physical wardrobe changes and we are generally in both realms seemingly more relaxed.
For some reason, men seem to notice women more in the summer, we look different to them. You might walk past the same man every day in the winter that doesn’t look twice at you, but come summer, it could be a completely different story.
Why is that?
I also understand and have seen for myself that morals decrease in the summer. There are more casual relationships and people seem to be more relaxed about to talking to someone that they wouldn’t have given the time of day to in the winter. Why is that?
I should imagine that this change in behaviour or attitude may or may not affect people who live in hot countries but it does affect people who live in countries that experience seasonal changes.
Why?
Scientists have discovered that moods can be affected by seasonal change. Not for everyone but for many. Have you heard of SAD? It stands for ‘Seasonal Affect Disorder’.
Surely you’ve heard of the winter blues? Scientists and Doctors now know that too little an amount of sunshine results in a vitamin D deficiency. Vitamin D triggers and arms the immune system. Isn’t God wonderful?
So, during the summer months after the lack of sunshine, people generally feel good about themselves.
Now I’m speaking to both sexes and all ages. The light reveals the truth. If you want to see where you are in the faith, conduct an inner man examination when you’re feeling good about yourself. In winter we tend to wrap up the outside and hide inside. During summer we are more relaxed and come out.
If you’re a female you’ll know if you enjoy showing off your body by what you wear in the summer. It’s easy to agree with the Pastor’s appeal for modest dressing in the winter.
Also if you’re a male, reading your bible and praying seems harder for you in the warmer months because you fight a natural instinct to be outdoors, taking in the atmosphere, reminding your local community of who you are, hanging with your friends or just doing anything or nothing. Who says you can’t do both? It’s about balance.
Will we be Winter Christians or all year round followers?
I have to warn and remind you of the oldest trick in the book that Satan uses against mankind. And the trick is this:
‘Encourage man to ignore the word of God and to go after his lusts’. For some believers, there appears to be an increase in fleshly desires in the summer.
Why did Adam and Eve eat the fruit? Remember they had the choice of many trees in the garden. Why weren’t they satisfied? We know that Eve was the one who was tempted because the bible tells us so. She gets a hard time because of it and her sin has cost and continues to plague women plenty!
But can you please understand something? Eve was indeed tempted but it was Adam who disobeyed. Yes, I agree that both didn’t do as God said but Adam’s disobedience was worse because he wasn’t tempted—he just listened to his wife. Adam received the commandment just after he was employed as Eden’s gardener. Eve was not yet given to him. It was his duty to demonstrate obedience to the commandment so that his wife and all future descendants could follow a godly example.
I now perceive that as a result of this, two styles of disobedience have been passed down to us. Disobedience: the result from lusting because of temptation, and disobedience: the result because of rebellion
Break that down?
If you stray from the faith it will be because of one of two things: temptation (because of lusting) or rebellion.
Let’s start with the temptation that leads to sin:
James 1:13-15 . . . Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man: But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.
Lusting from temptation begins with something within our own hearts. If you allow your lust to manifest, it will result in sin. Sin will not let you go, it will want to grow up with and within you right into death.
What about rebellion?
1 Samuel 15:23… For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, he hath also rejected thee from being king.
Rebellion is a refusal of obedience or order.
This is different to temptation that leads to sin, because of lust. Outright rebellion is a reflection of a stubborn heart. The obstinate heart knows the law, but refuses to obey it.
So regardless as to whether your weakness is lustful temptation or rebellion, both are dangerous. Temptation to sin separates you from God and rebellion causes him to reject you.
Praise the Lord! We have a God who promises to forgive sin and rebellion.
If only eating fruit was the greatest temptation known to man, you could say that Adam had it easy.
I can’t say that women are the greatest temptation to men; because some men are attracted to men, and some women are attracted to women (please note that for Kingdom citizens neither is acceptable).
I can’t say that money is the greatest temptation to mankind because some people aren’t that interested in getting a job. It can’t be food either, because some people suffer from eating disorders that cause them to reject food. So what is it?
The greatest temptation known to mankind is simply that which has been forbidden. Whether forbidden by God, anyone in authority, or even yourself!
My greatest temptations may not be yours. We all have our personal tastes.
The list of temptations is endless so I shall tell you what the bible sums it up as.
For us Christians the greatest temptation is the system of the world and the temptation to doubt the word of God. There are numerous and various temptations within this system that operate outside of the will of God.
Our opening scripture tells us that Demas used to be a preacher and a servant of the gospel with the Apostle Paul, but he loved the world and left the faith and went back to it.
When we confessed Christ we joined a new spiritual kingdom. We are now citizens of the Kingdom of God.
Turn to John 18:36… Jesus answered, my kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence.
Loving and lusting after the world is forbidden. We too as Demas was, might be tempted to return. We have to learn to reject the world and this will have to be practiced.
1 John 2:15… Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
Now turn to John 17:15-16… I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the
