Where’s the Burning Barrel?
Been rummaging through a few things this morning…
A few things that I need to burn!
Oh, look, there’s the burning barrel right over there.
Watch me while I get rid of all this mess…
I’m tossing in all my insecurities around 9:00.
It’ll take me from now ’til then to get them all rounded up.
I’ll dump my disappointments in after that;
they served absolutely no purpose.
I’m dropping off my frustrations before I forget as if
I could ever forget them.
The barrel is filling up but not before I trash my put-downs;
their day with me is done.
I see a small empty spot on the other side—
maybe my failures will fit there;
they were far more valuable to others than they were to me.
Still a little space to the top of the barrel;
Just enough for the final resting place of all my fears.
What a relief to burn them.
Swoosh! There goes the match and everything that has
ever stood in my way.
God, I love this burning barrel!

Requiem for a Rough Ride
(from the weathered perspective of a seasoned educator)
Years ago we chose to take this ride.
It seemed like a good choice at the time, and we could hardly wait to hit the road!
On the road, we met others who chose to take this same ride.
Some beamed with the very same enthusiasm as ours!
Our paths crossed both intentionally and unintentionally as we savored our journey like blue ribbon winners at a county fair.
Eager eyes watched our every move as we steered with great perfection—loving every minute of every day’s drive.
We were careful to give the drive all we had in us, so we prepared ourselves in our spare time, on weekends, at night and even on the go to steer clear of bumps in the road and to maximize the experience!
We sharpened our skills every chance we got and every possible way we could daring to make sure that we were ready to take the wheel when it was time to drive; we wanted a pleasurable ride!
Nothing could dim the gleam in our eyes as we cherished the journey of our own choosing—a journey that took years of preparation.
The eager eyes that awaited us made the drive oh so sweet!
That was how our ride started off!
Over indefinite time frames, toxic fumes and devilish forces began pestering us from the sides of the road and caught us off guard. We almost lost it when dazed eyes replaced the eager eyes we’d grown to expect and focus became a major issue for dazed eyes that never bothered to watch the well planned moves that we refused to quit trying to make.
When disrespect grew rampart, we realized that our journey had gotten out of control! Though we fought back with desperation, the forces made our daily drive too long and too hard!
Spotlights only showed up whenever we swerved or made a wrong turn and the onlookers could only offer unkind gestures and off-the-wall criticisms; they laughed at our perils and demeaned our efforts.
The drive itself got so hard to handle that it became impossible to maintain safety, and the rules of the road seemed to change by the minute.
We were no longer free to steer in our own directions and our creativity meant absolutely nothing! Who knew we’d be reduced to moving targets for dazed eyes?
Initially, we thought that our enthusiasm, preparation and comradery was enough to keep us driving, but this untimely twist was most devastating!
With no clearing in view and despite our dedication, we pulled off the road, turned into the terminal—a few here and a few there—and passed over our keys to new unsuspecting enthusiasts.
With bittersweet memories and teary eyes, we left the terminal.
We knew that our time had come!
So we grasped it with that same vigor that we had taken the wheel so many years ago!
