King Ahasuerus: a Shadow or Type of the Lord Jesus Christ: From the Book of Esther
By Susan Steele
()
About this ebook
Many books have been written about Queen Esther,
extolling her excellent character, but who is King Ahasuerus,
or Xerxes, as he is known in the Greek?
Is he the larger-than-life tyrant as portrayed in the movie 300,
or is he the compassionate, merciful king
as depicted in the movie One Night with the King?
Perhaps, King Ahasuerus is someone else altogether.
By the Spirit of the Lord, this book will present an
extraordinary, new perspective of King Ahasuerus.

Acknowledgments
To Jesus—My Lord and Savior: All glory, praise, and honor for this project belongs to You. Be glorified—magnified—in my life! Thank you Jesus; for revealing truth to me in a way that makes sense.
To my Mom—always: For all that you are and all that you do. Although mere words do not seem to be enough, this will have to do. Thank you for reading this manuscript, more than once, and for discussing the minutia of grammar and the meaning of words with me. I love you.
To Emily Everitt and Jered Hutchens—Gifts from God: Thank you for collaborating on the artwork for the front cover. Your laughter echoes on in the sweet memories of my mind.
To Mary B. Vase: For loving me, praying for me, and getting up on your soap box to preach the Word to me! Thank you for your encouragement—your words echo in this book.
To A. R.: For being a willing participant, albeit anonymous, in the creative process by critiquing the content of this manuscript. Thank you—your insight and comments are always valuable.
To Kimberly Phillips: For chips and dip, and intimate conversations about God—you really make me think. Thank you for proofreading the initial pages, and the final draft while preserving the original intent of the manuscript. Your analytical, line-by-line critique was invaluable.
To my David: God knows who you are. I pray, one day, that you will be real…
Preamble
While much has been written about the Biblical Book of Esther, the description of its main characters seems to follow this particular format: Queen Vashti is portrayed as the woman mistreated and heralded for her stand against the tyranny of her husband; Haman is, without a doubt, the villain of the story; Queen Esther, as the savior of her people, is the heroine; and King Ahasuerus is described as a weak, drunk, vacillating man, who is ruled by women. By the Spirit of the Lord, this book presents another viewpoint altogether of two of the main characters from the Book of Esther. While Haman is the undisputed picture of evil and Esther is indeed a woman of excellence, Queen Vashti and King Ahasuerus are not quite as they have been typically portrayed.
Come, and see what the Spirit of the Lord has revealed.
It is time for Truth to be unveiled…

Preface
A number of years ago, I had the privilege of leading an Old Testament Bible Study. As a group, we read through the Old Testament from In the beginning…
to Then Solomon rested with his fathers…
(Genesis 1:1 and 1 Kings 11:43, respectively). We suffered with Job, played a guitar while reading the Psalms, grew wiser through the recitation of the Proverbs, and wandered through the streets looking for a lost love in the Song of Solomon. For two years we continued strong and it was so much fun.
About that same time, I was taking an Old Testament Hebrew Bible class at the University of Wisconsin—Eau Claire. The class was taught
