About this ebook

This is about worms, flies, and cheeseballs, anchovies, sardines, herring, flashers, spoons, plugs, and jigs. It is about a boy’s passion for the sport of fishing, the perils we sometimes face when we step out of bounds, and about a father who understood each adolescent is different, and who convinced my mother that the length of the leash for each needs adjusting accordingly. It is about the loss of direction, and an unsettled life after he was gone.

Mr. Pat

Patrick was born in 1942, in Cicero, Illinois. Structured family mattered; rewards crowned achievement; punishment fit transgressions. There was no Facebook, Twitter, email, texting, or, cell phones. Without all the modern social media to distract from his daily life, Patrick began fishing when he was six in the washes and reservoirs near citrus groves in Los Angeles County. The Coronado Islands, Long Beach Harbor, Catalina Island, and Lake Arrowhead, California were Patrick’s playgrounds until he moved on to college at Portland, Oregon and the nearby salmon and steelhead rivers. Fishing was always a factor; he graduated in 1965 and for a time returned to Southern California to be near the tuna grounds south of San Diego and the expansive lakes behind the dams on the Colorado River. The Oregon coast and salmon rivers in the Pacific Northwest drew him back in 1971. Oregon was a stepping-stone to Alaska, and then the Middle East near the Red Sea, and for a time, Botswana, Africa and the Zambezi River. He returned to the Pacific Northwest in 1991. Patrick retired in 2006; he currently resides in Fort Myers, Florida. Patrick has four children, seven grandchildren, two great grandchildren, and Brandy and Duchess two yellow Labrador Retrievers.
