Introduction
W hy another book on grammar? You probably have been learning quite a lot of grammar, but you are still not clear about how to make a sentence. Why? Is there anything wrong with your approach to learning? If we offer you a funny way, a non-traditional method, a ‘ new ’ perspective on thinking about grammar, will you try it?
The aim of this book is to introduce a ‘new’ perspective on learning grammar, especially for Business English. We start and end with sentences, the most important part in writing, and sometimes speaking. Unlike traditional grammar books that discuss nouns, verbs, adjectives, we go straight to sentences as we believe at the end of the day what you want are actually sentences.
There have been lots of grammar books on sentences. People call them syntax. Yet books on syntax are extremely abstract (difficult) that it is hard for everyone to understand. This book is different, totally. As the name of the book indicates, it makes you feel good about grammar.
How? This book has four features:
o Focusing on how to make sentences
■ Most grammar books helps you understand grammar terms.
■ But, we show you how to put them into practice, how to make sentences (written and spoken).
o Explaining grammar in an easy, funny way
■ For example, to learn sentence patterns in English, you’ll have to solve a problem between two women who have to ‘share’ a husband.
■ For example, to get the differences between the past simple and the present perfect simple, you’ll read a love story.
■ You’ll also learn funny names such as Lonely, Friendly, Slim, and Fat Verbs.
o Reading it like changing TV channels
■ You can read the book chapter by chapter, or
■ You can just jump to whichever chapter (channel) that interests you.
o Avoiding using jargon
■ There is a minimum use of grammar terms.
■ You’ll find terms such as Baby Verbs (not the verb ‘be’), Small Verbs (not gerunds or infinitives).
So, let’s start your journey of easy grammar, grammar that makes you feel good, grammar that teaches you how to make sentences.
