About this ebook
Larry Dossey, MD, author of Healing Words and One Mind and
executive editor of Explore: The Journal of Science and Healing
More than sixty years ago, the Oglala shaman Black Elk predicted that with the closure of this cycle of ages, the primordial spirituality would reemerge and become the foundation for the next cycle. In Opening the Aloha Mind, Dr. Jim Nourse has made a great contribution toward expanding our western understanding of indigenous spiritual wisdom, and in doing so he has created very good medicine indeed.
Hank Wesselman, PhD, anthropologist and author of

This is wonderful work that can help many. Opening the Aloha Mind gives powerful tools for transformation and healing.
Sandra Ingerman, author of Soul Retrieval and
Shamanic Journeying: A Beginners Guide
This is a rare treasure of a book, weaving an incredible tapestry of the wisdom of the ages for any modern seeker and for anyone involved in service toward others. Jim Nourse shares his personal experience of an ancient, original world culture, and gracefully infuses it with tremendous insight into growing edge psychology and spiritual traditions. His simple, profound, and beautifully written message of the necessity for real self-empowerment is incredibly validating. To read this book is to have an experience of truth.

Love and gratitude to our friends Joshua, Annaleah and Valerie, who help us stay connected with Paradise.
I greatly appreciate my editor, David Colin Carr, who not only rendered a clean manuscript but also really understood this subject and its importance for our time. David’s nurturance of this project’s unfolding has far exceeded the formal task of editing.
And thanks be to my best friend, soul companion, wife, and ipo Judith. We’ll travel somewhere other than Hawaiʻi… soon… I promise.
A brief note about format
Throughout this book, a blank page will occur between the ending of one chapter and the beginning of the next. This convention is included as a symbol of returning to Zero, the heart of the process you are about to discover. It is also an invitation to see the blank pages as the real subject of this book.
Image03.jpgINTRODUCTION
Image04.TIFWhat follows is a labor of love and at the same time a journey cautiously undertaken out of conviction. I have seen the process it describes impact both my clients and my personal life. I have grown to trust that there is a level of healing wisdom which the ancient world knew well, but which modern medicine and psychology access only by accident, if at all. This book is a labor of love that is riding a cultural wave which is rising to restore balance to a world view and philosophy of healing that has become one-sided in excluding so much of what is essential to true healing.
The caution I feel in adding my understanding to this philosophy and the methods that emerge from it is twofold. First, a technique may be mastered after a few repetitions, but mastering the mindset in which it is embedded and enables it to be used with true comprehension, is an evolving art. Accompanying this is the unconscious resistance to novelty. While we may wish to know something new, the old can have formidable inertia. True understanding consists not just of what we have learned but of what we have been willing to unlearn.
For the seasoned teacher and practitioner of this approach, this book will hopefully be patiently regarded as devoted effort of one who has much to unlearn to come to grips with a method that has pleased his heart while challenging his burdensome intellect—which makes this an opportunity for all of us to practice the process.
The second caution I confront is my awareness that the world’s native peoples have been exploited enough. Land has been taken, religion replaced, native language forbidden to be taught to the children. Their civilization lays waste, and now, in our own emptiness and restlessness, we return for a taste of that spirituality our forebears did their best to destroy. Today as my wife and I left the company of our Hawaiian friend and teacher, I was stopped by a wave of grief that seemed to come up from the ground through my feet. It felt like the crying of many souls, and of the land. It felt both current and very old.
A shaman we know came under fire from some in his tribal family who felt that white people did not deserve access to the sacred knowledge. Enough has been taken already, they implored. Do not give them what is closest to our heart and spirit. He conceded that much had been stolen, but the question is no longer of deserving. With the world so perilously close to the edge of an abyss, there is no choice but to teach all who are willing to learn, those who seek sanity, so the world may have a chance.
The efforts of a suppressed people to awaken to and take pride in their unique cultural and spiritual identity naturally creates an aversion to outsiders laying claim to their wisdom. Yet the discovery of sublime value in these ideas, I believe, is not an insult, but an honor. These ideas are not static remnants of a forgotten time, but living truths that are an offering to a larger world in great need of them. Will this knowledge change the world? Hopefully. Will it be changed by the world? That is how the collective consciousness of humanity evolves. If my part in this process has offended any native person, I humbly ask for forgiveness. At the same time, I offer my deepest gratitude and trust that we are moving, however fitfully, toward a world in which we all live from the foundation of our shared Self I-dentity.
I have learned many methods in the course of my career as a psychologist, yet this one not only fascinates me, but perplexes me with its sense of urgency to be shared. No other approach has aroused such feelings of being inadequate to the task nor being the right person for it. Training as a psychologist is not entirely irrelevant to this venture, but it is not a qualification.
The decision to proceed with the writing and, ultimately, with the publication of this book is the result of ongoing practice of the process it describes. In the grip of conflicting ideas and feelings, it is often impossible to think one’s way to clarity. Wisdom counsels not only waiting for clarity, but calling upon that faculty of mind that sees beyond the inner debate—a faculty that can clean the mind of the arguments that paralyze it. This book is about achieving that clarity and moving toward an experience of peace that is inherently contagious.
With gratitude and Aloha,

. . . the human beings (Native Americans), my son,

This book is about a philosophy, a technique, a process called Self I-dentity Through Ho‘oponopono®—simply referred to hereinafter as Ho‘oponopono. This term traditionally refers to an ancient Polynesian system of conflict resolution and forgiveness. Here, Hoʻoponopono refers to an inner process that is a natural development from its historical predecessor.
It is, first and foremost, a problem-solving strategy. What distinguishes it from most other such strategies is that it seeks to solve problems by working on oneself rather than on external circumstances. When using Ho‘oponopono, one finds that, as the self is brought into a state of balance and clarity, the external world is experienced as less problematic. In fact, problems are seen as opportunities to achieve greater balance and clarity. In addition, the ongoing practice of Ho‘oponopono can lead to a more harmonious experience of life, and the knowledge that one’s happiness is not dependent upon external events.
While this subject can stand on its own, for me its beauty and richness are enhanced by reference to history and cultural context. Our modern western mindset reduces our healing interventions to the active ingredient.
Yet, that ingredient in an herbal medicine, when extracted, synthesized and concentrated, brings daunting side effects in the absence of buffering influences supplied by the inactive
rejected plant components. So historical and cultural factors surrounding a practice add to a person’s ability to
