Linda Atkinson

Linda Atkinson’s second book, OSCAR BY MY SIDE…The Story Of A Tiny Dachshund And The Girl Who Loved The Sea, is about the mysterious bond that can be shared between humans and animals, and sometimes, might even be …magical! In her latest book, she writes an entertaining and comical story based on her friendship with the owner of a miniature Dachshund, whose name really is “Oscar,” and how his ongoing shenanigans, starting from puppy hood, keep him in trouble at every turn. These capers are depicted as they actually happened. Atkinson writes knowledgably about the natural resources of her home state of Rhode Island, and her lead human character, “Rachel,” being a marine biologist, explores the coastline in and around Narragansett Bay. She writes about the summer resort areas of Watch Hill, Misquamicut, and other locations in Westerly, Rhode Island. Her inspiring narrative ends with guided suggestions for readers who are thinking of adopting a pet; and she presents a realistic approach to anyone considering taking on this responsibility.

    Acknowledgements

I would like to thank the actual Oscar and Rita (Rachel), whose unconventional adventures filled the pages of my journal for almost two years; ultimately evolving into, OSCAR BY MY SIDE…The Story Of A Tiny Dachshund And The Girl Who Loved The Sea.

I would be remiss without mentioning the renowned British author and veterinarian, James Herriot. He was my favorite childhood author, and his books fascinated and inspired me with his remarkable accounts of being a country veterinarian in England and Scotland.

In his celebrated book, All Things Bright and Beautiful, you can find this lovely quote:

    All things bright and beautiful,

    All creatures great and small,

    All things wise and wonderful,

The Lord God make them all.

    Cecil Frances Alexander 1818-1895

    Dedication

I dedicate this book to all the wonderful and caring people who have found their way to animal shelters, and adopted loving and faithful companions for themselves or for their children.

Growing up as an only child, my rescued pets brought me friendship and taught me responsibility, but most of all I discovered unconditional love from each and every one of those precious animals.

THANK YOU, to all of you who care! You have saved a life, ended suffering, and have given yourself the gift of unconditional love.

    With gratitude ~

    Linda

My name is Rachel Victoria Rafaneli. I’m a marine biologist living in Rhode Island in Southern New England; and this is the story of how one mischievous, miniature Dachshund changed everything in my world.

    This is our magical story…

    In the Beginning

My Aunt Rosalie wanted my parents to name me Rachele Rosalie Vittoria, but my mother said, no, I think it will be just, Rachel Victoria, a little bit American with a beautiful Italian last name to make us proud."

I grew up in Johnston, Rhode Island just outside of Providence in a very large Italian family. I had so many aunts, uncles and cousins it was like an on-going celebration at
