    JOSEPH S. MAXWELL

    Joseph Sprague Maxwell was born in Beaver Falls, PA on May 5, l891. He grew up in Chester, West Virginia and East Liverpool, Ohio, graduating from East Liverpool High School. He attended Muskingum College in New Concord, Ohio and graduated in 1912. He then went to Assuit, Egypt, under the auspices of the United Presbyterian Church of North America, to teach in a college there. After one year he returned to the US, where he attended and graduated from Pittsburgh Medical School. In 1919 he married Mary Frances McDougall from Chariton, Iowa. Together they went as missionaries to the Anglo Egyptian Sudan, as it was called then. This included a six month stay in London to study tropical medicine. In 1929 he and his family transferred to Ethiopia, where they remained until 1933, when they returned to the US. After a year of training in opthalmology in Philadelphia, and two years working in Kentucky, Dr. Maxwell settled in Fairmont, West Virginia, where he set up his private practice in 1936. He retired in 1948, moved to Florida, and remained in Kissimmee, Florida, until his death in 1985. He had four children.

      When we are compelled in one direction or the other we should always be aware of the divine nature of that force. The Lion by Dr. Joseph S. Maxwell was a story that would not rest quietly in the confines of Malcolm and Martha Vandevort’s den on the second story of their home on 50 acres overlooking Lake Wilhelm in north western Pennsylvania. How this book ended up in my hands is no accident and if anything, this is a cry for awareness that God is in all things. The spirit that wrote The Lion is the same spirit that delivers it to you at just the right moment in your life. Dr. Charles Van Dyne spent 50 years in the pulpit and for the last 10 years of his earthly ministry he mentored me and raised me up in the way I should go. He filled a void that we all long for in life and that is a father figure, a role model tethered to the holy of holy’s, something the world is in short supply of. Long before I met Chuck he had had a stroke, was blinded in one eye and walked with a cane, I happened onto one of his Sunday morning services and almost immediately noticed God’s hand in our chance meeting. On occasion we would have lunch but it was the Friday afternoon visits in his office at the church that encouraged me to reach for that which was beyond my grasp. It was Christmas Eve 2009 that folks started to gather at the church when Kim and I turned up the dead end street that led to the little church on the hill and noticed an ambulance. We parked the car and soon learned that Chuck had fallen on the stairs and hit his head. Suddenly our Christmas Eve service was without a minister and his wife whom played the piano and directed the choir would rush off to the hospital to be by his side. Quickly the elders gathered in the office to discuss the matter and with only minutes until the hour someone mentioned they saw a gentleman from the Salvation Army in the pews. Soon the fellow was contacted and agreed to speak for a few moments, one of the elders agreed to play the piano and the glory of the Lord began on schedule. The service was a beautiful thing though many never knew; Chuck was being life flighted to a Pittsburgh hospital where he would be pronounced dead early Christmas morning. The phone call came as Kim
