Life moves ever forward, just like a train. Sometimes we think we have everything set in place. Then life throws us a curve and in an instant plans are changed. But just like a train that can get back on track, we have the power within ourselves to recover, renew, and continue to move forward.

PREFACE
How do you define bliss
? Most people think of "bliss as a rapturous feeling associated with love, sex, or even great food. But bliss has another, deeper meaning.
The late Joseph Campbell, noted philosopher and student of religion, described bliss as a form of tranquility or calmness, a sense of being at peace with one’s self and the universe.
As an oncology nurse with over 35 years of experience in helping cancer patients, I have seen – all too often – how this disease and the fear that it evokes can rob a patient of the will to live. To be sure, cancer is serious and needs to be taken seriously. Patients should be guided by their health care professionals, be diligent about treatments regimens, and keep their physicians informed about how they are feeling and how they are responding to treatment. But a diagnosis of cancer does not mean that life is over and that the remainder of one’s days–whether long or short —should be not be lived to the fullest. To the contrary, a patient should view cancer as another chapter on the road of life –an unwanted chapter perhaps, but not one that should prevent the patient from living, from loving and from receiving love in return.
The first step is to achieve a state of bliss, a state of acceptance and calmness. You have the disease but it does not have you. You’ve had disappointments in life, including this diagnosis, but you’ve never let disappointments stop you before. Why now? There’s so much more that life can offer, and will offer, if you embrace it. Put the disappointment and fear to one side; accept that the disease is present and that you’re going to deal with it. Don’t focus on why
(as in why me?
); focus instead on what
(as in OK, I have the cancer.
) Now what do I want to do with the rest of my life? Are there things I always wanted to do? Friendships I wish I could revive? Love I’d like to find?
This is my theory of finding bliss during and after cancer. It sounds simple, almost childish, but it can and does work. I’ve seen hundreds of patients do miraculous things (including, in many cases, helping themselves to heal) after they accept the fact that they have cancer, make peace with themselves and the universe, and focus not on the why
but on the what
. This book is a tribute to them, their courage, and their success.
If there is bitterness in the heart, sugar in the mouth won’t make life sweeter.
Yiddish proverb (My grandmother Alice)
INTRODUCTION
The first person that I was aware of who had cancer was my grandmother. She never mentioned the word cancer to me, however, when I would sleep over at her house and see her get undress into her night gown, I would catch glimpses of the two scars across her chest.
My grandmother always looked beautiful. She always made sure to wear her special bra and girdle with the special clips for her stockings. She would put her earrings and her red lipstick on and go out. No one would suspect that her first breast cancer experience was in her early fifties, or that her second breast cancer experience would occur twenty years later.
As I got older, I took my grandmother to the special lingerie shops that sold special bras. Very rarely did she ever discuss her cancer experience with me. We spoke about her long auburn braids that she had as a child, and of how my grandfather fell in love with her and would wait for outside her apartment house.
Despite her cancer experiences, my grandmother led a full and active life. She was exceptional person—and lived to be ninety. She was able to celebrate joyous occasions, with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
In her own unique way my grandmother showed me how to move forward despite adversity; there is another life you can have without being totally consumed by a diagnosis of cancer.
The purpose of this book is to provide straightforward, practical help for people who have to cope with the difficult disease process of cancer. I hope that this book will enable readers to find some form of solace, as well as humor to get through their experiences of cancer.
For me, unknowingly, the process of seeing, beautiful, courageous and strong people coping with cancer started before I was born. The stage was already set for me to become an active participant in the process of helping people who experience cancer.
