About this ebook

Only For A While is the story of a lovingly created stuffed bear named Rosebud. Her journey begins in the arms of seven year old Hannah. Rosebud never dreamed she would ever be parted from Hannah, her best friend. She is content to stay on her bed and wait for her return each day. When Hannah leaves for college, she tells Rosebud she will only be gone for a while. Sad and lonely, Rosebud is delighted when a little girl enters Hannahs room and asks to borrow her for a while. Little does Rosebud know that she is about to go a long journey away from her beloved Hannah. Throughout her journey, a strong thread of hope that she will one day find Hannah again never wavers.

    Prologue

The late spring rising sun sent a beam of light through the front display window of NELLIE’S ANTIQUES AND USABLE JUNK SHOP. For a few minutes the sun rested upon an open dust-covered wooden box filled with old discarded toys. The box had been sitting in the same spot on the floor for a long time. The head of a stuffed giraffe drooped over the side of the box. Close to the giraffe were dolls in various shapes and sizes with dirty, dusty faces and matted hair. And, in one corner of the box, barely visible, rested an old stuffed bear.

The bear’s stuffing had become lumpy and much of it had escaped through tears and holes in the body. Her covering was stained and dirty; all of the printed pink rosebuds on her cloth body were faded or completely gone. Even some of her repair patches were frayed away to thin threads. Her once bright red satin heart had frayed to a heart-shaped fringe.

The warm sun slowly reached part of the bear’s face. It rested there for a brief moment, stirring a deep sigh from within her. She opened her eyes and tried to move, but it was pointless. The toys surrounding her rested heavily on her frail body, preventing her from moving.

As the sun continued on its journey, the bear sighed and drifted off to sleep for the thousandth time. Her thoughts began to mingle with her dreams and she was once again in the gentle hands of Mrs. Tucker, being created, stitch by stitch into a soft, cuddly bear for her daughter Hannah’s birthday. That was years… and… years ago.
