Foreword
The 15th anniversary of Léo Ferré’s death marks the rediscovery of one of the greatest personalities of French song and poetry.

will surely know that it’s about rediscovering a true apostle of music.

I
SONG
or Léo Ferré, a man who sings
One
My Way of 5 Songs
Chapter SeparatorFOR me, Léo Ferré, was a man who sang – otherwise said, not what I would call a singer , in the time when I was between 13 and 20 years old.
Léo Ferré, was Pretty kid, Paris blackguard, With time, The Poets, C’est extra, songs I knew and I could listen to on RTL or Europe 1 – the free radios
, the FM bandwidth not being popularized yet – without feeling the irresistible urge to change stations or cut the sound; this is the reason why I was saying I could listen to them. Brassens, Brel, Béart, Ferrat, Gainsbourg, Leclerc, Mouloudji, Moustaki, was the group of which Ferré was a part of: that of men who sing, not singers.
I can imagine I’m starting to raise a lot of eyebrows, not to mention shoulders. So I’ll try to clarify, to explain my goal.
These men who were singing were «committed singers»: this is the term with which I became acquainted at 16 years of age, thanks to the kindness of some school colleagues, who charitably instructed me in regards to the subject of this honorable singers’ caste. Before, I was totally ignorant. For me, singers were those of the RTL hit parade, presented at the time by André Thorent. I quote in bulk some names and some corresponding titles: Dave with Swann’s Way, Gérard Lenorman with Winter mornings, Patrick Juvet with Musica, C. Jérôme with Himalaya, Frédéric François with Come get lost in my arms, Michel Sardou with Love affliction and, in addition, thanks to my parents: John William with Lara’s song and The friends of song with The Comedians – which I would later learn, was a composition of Aznavour.
In short, this is what I liked to listen to, the ones to which I would remember the lyrics to with enthusiasm. I can’t resist the pleasure of quoting two verses:
– of Dave :
I would gladly go take a walk
Swann’s way
To see my first love again
Who gave me a rendezvous
Under the oak
And let herself be kissed on the cheek
– of Sardou :
It runs it runs
Love’s affliction
In the hearts of children from 7 to 77 years old
It sings it sings
The insolent river
Uniting in bed
Blond and grey hair
Then, one day – I was 14 years old –, I randomly heard on my favorite radio station, which was broadcasting a show called Stop or encore, another quatrain of intro:
Une rob’ de cuir comme un fuseau
Qu’aurait du chien sans l’faire exprès
Et dedans comme un matelot
Un’ fill’ qui tangue un air anglais
———
A dress of leather like a spindle
Qu’aurait du chien sans l’faire exprès
And inside, like a sailor is
A girl who sings an English air
I had just gotten acquainted with the 5th song, which would become part of my solid knowledge: C’est extra.
