—made him resonate with joy, and he made his mother’s devotion for Édith Piaf, and her talent, his own.

LETTER TO EDITH
Dear Édith,
I never knew you personally, of course, and I wasn’t even a fan while you were alive. Indeed, when you had to leave this world—leaving French music like an orphan without a mother—I was 3 years old. And yet, it is quite true, quite sincere to tell you that your music has rocked my childhood, like a cradle would a baby. Indeed, my mother, who had a magnificent voice, loved singing La vie en rose, Hymne à l’amour and many other works from your immortal oeuvre to me. Besides, she is always very fond of recalling the moving memory of my third year on this earth, which unfortunately coincided with your definitive departure: as a small boy, stirring and awakening, I played in my park my muted radio, which did not stop me from recognizing and listening to one of last—but not least—songs: Non, je ne regrette rien (literally: No, I regret nothing
).
Listen, Mom!
I said, then straightened out the whole of my small body. Listen, listen!
Nothing at all!"
As a little music lover, I very eloquently revealed in that pleasurable sound while that nothingness
resounded around me and in my head. Encouraging my good humour, my mother would increase the volume of the radio. In truth, that alone would have been enough make me wise!
Later, when I as a teenager, I admit that I let myself be more readily attracted by other music, of the kind that could hardly act as lullabies, including the rocks song of many English bands: the Beatles, the Stray Cats and the Rubettes, to name but a few. Had I forgotten you, Édith? Not entirely, even though the teenage years are an ungrateful ages in many ways. In truth, my sensitive and passionate airs—which emphasized all the fervor hidden within your small stature— reappeared in my memory only at the end of this troubled period.
Thus, in addition to the two titles mentioned above, I let myself become captivated by Padam… Padam…,

, L’accordéoniste and so many others. I also became familiar with the film Royal Affairs in Versailles, in which your character, the Woman of the People, sang Ça ira at the gate of the imposing castle.
Go see it! I exclaimed reverently, when addressing my relatives.
There’s a Piaf at the gate!" But, I assure you, I was not mocking you; rather, I was using an affectionate phrase to refer to the worthy representative of the people of Paris, whom you embodied so well.
I have so much to tell you, dear Édith. I shall continue on later.
