The Game is on...

Light and darkness...

All Kein wanted was to be devoured. As an orphan, she had been told since joining her school that it was very important that a house or clan devour her so when she met a creature promising to devour her, she was confused at first but then she was consoled that someone wanted her.

A world of monsters and a world of humans...

Loneliness can be a very strong emotion but it can also be a very strong motivator so even when a creature of the darkness invited her to come to her, innocence heeded the call. Kein began an adventure of heartache and joy as she walked the paths of shadow and light. She would discover what it was to be devoured as a dangerous game drew her into a deadly realm of wishes, revenge, hope, desire, love, and horror.

    Chapter Seventeen

Ice So Hot, Hate So Cold

    The scientist's lab...

    The stasis chamber room...

Minutes earlier, Kein ( Kīn ) had placed her hand on the stasis chamber and spoken with Mrs. Jekyll. Kein did so to save Dr. Jekyll. Something on or within the stasis chamber she came into contact with was slowly freezing her hand with ice so cold it felt like her hand was on fire. Even with the pain, Kein managed to save Dr. Jekyll by forcing Mr. Hyde to appear, and he wasn't too happy that she had disturbed Mrs. Jekyll.

You spoke to her? Mr. Hyde questioned as his eyes went wild with a rage that could shred her apart with its intensity. How is that possible? he asked as he turned and looked at the large cylinder full of blue liquid that was lit up like a nightlight in the dark room. His rage turned to desperation as he questioned, What did she say? Did she ask about me?

You lied before, Kein said and grunted for the pain as she grabbed her wrist, trying to stop the spread of the blue-white snowflakes that were inching up her arm. She had earlier removed the one glove that had safeguarded her against the emotions of the others, so she could examine her hand to see why it hurt so much. Kein was alarmed by what she saw especially since Fear had gone back to sleep, and she had no way of healing the unnatural injury. Kein said through her own concern, You do care about her.

Tell me! Mr. Hyde yelled as he turned once again and peered at the blonde woman suspended in the liquid. She was wearing a blue dress and appeared to be sleeping peacefully as she floated in the glowing liquid. What did she say?

I wasn't there long, Kein replied still in agonizing pain. I asked her if she remembered any of the key codes, and then she told me that she would like for me to come back.

You can talk to her by touching the chamber? he questioned, but then he didn’t wait on a reply. Mr. Hyde marched over to Kein, grabbed her by her right elbow, and dragged her to the stasis chamber.

Wait! Don’t! she shouted as she tried to resist. I can't right now... Please stop! Kein pleaded. Fear's not–

He dragged her across the room until they reached the stasis chamber. Mr. Hyde violently grabbed her injured right hand and forced her to touch the cylinder again.

Wait! Don't! she screamed as she struggled against him. I had my glove on before! I can't touch it barehanded!

Mr. Hyde was unmoved by her desperate pleas as one thing burned and raged through his enraged thinking. He took her bare hand and slapped it on the glass as he kept his on top of hers to keep her from escaping. Kein screamed, screamed in agony as the cold seared pain on top of the pain that she was already enduring. Mr. Hyde felt the intense cold even though all he was touching was her hand. He did have a high threshold for pain and easily ignored his own and the screaming woman’s extreme discomfort. Kein pulled and pulled, trying to free her hand that seemed to be freezing solid. She expected to see her arm turn a whitish blue as her hand slowly turned into a popsicle, but the flesh remained flesh and soft. It only turned blue with the intricate patterns of the snowflakes. Kein started to lose consciousness for the unbearable agony, but Mr. Hyde grabbed hold of her hair, bent her head back, and whispered in her ear.

Faint and I will gut you! I will keep your hand here until you have completely frozen or I have spoken to my wife. Bring Isabelle out so I can speak to her!

Mrs. Jekyll opened her eyes as if she had been startled from a dream. Kein continued to scream in agony as she collapsed to her knees and tried to pull herself free.

Stop this! Mrs. Jekyll shouted. Stop this right now! Can you not see that she is in pain?

You are alive, Mr. Hyde spoke as he reached out his other hand to touch the glass, but he stopped himself before he did. I always feared he kept your body alive but that your heart and mind were gone.

You are hurting her! Mrs. Jekyll screamed, paying no attention to what he was saying. The shrieks Kein screamed were like her own when she first woke in her trapped world. The wild man wasn’t listening to her, so Mrs. Jekyll screeched, Let go of her, beast! Let go of her, you fiendish brute!

Mr. Hyde immediately let go of Kein as his wife's hateful words hit him like a runaway carriage. Kein fell backward as she held onto her injured arm as if it had shattered.

I knew it, Mr. Hyde spoke. She hates me. She has always hated me.

A wail came out of his lips like that of a wounded animal, and then Dr. Jekyll reappeared and moved quickly to Kein's side.

I am sorry, Dr. Jekyll told her. Hyde can be so cruel. Quickly stand. I need to move you to the next room.

Kein nodded still close to fainting. She managed to stand and with his help, she hurried to the next room. A large in-ground pool with a glowing yellow liquid in it was in its center. He helped her walk to it and kneel beside it.

Place your hand in the pool. Actually, place your whole arm as far as you can. It should return it to normal, Dr. Jekyll instructed her.

She did as she was told, and the hand started to feel better right away.

You should not have done such a foolish thing, he scolded her.

Which foolish thing? Kein questioned as the fire in her hand ceased and was replaced by a throbbing pain. Talking to your wife or waking Mr. Hyde?

Both, he replied. What I would also like to know is how you were able to maintain contact with the chamber long enough to have a conversation with my wife?

It's a secret, Kein replied as she looked at her hand within the soothing yellow liquid. It had returned to normal, so she questioned, What is this liquid in this pool?

My own secret, he told her. Tell me your secret, and I will tell you mine.

Kein thought about Fear and the deadly game she was forced to play in the Mortem. She would have lost her life many times, competing on the Basement Level if not for what lived within her. Secrets could be helpful, but they also could be harmful.

Maybe I should share it and share it very soon, she stated. I can’t just yet. She looked at Dr. Jekyll and saw all the wildness had left his face. I guess I still need to ask two more questions. Kein stood as she made several fists with her hand, and then she asked, Is my hand really okay?

He gently took hold of her hand, and she pulled back from him still in the grips of terror Mr. Hyde had brought about within her being. She forced herself to move forward and allowed him to hold her hand as she said, Sorry. I’m still a little… jumpy.

No need to apologize, Dr. Jekyll stated as he inspected her hand with care, and then he told her, Your hand will be fine.

Thank you, Kein told him, and then she felt a little weird just standing there in silence, so she said, I actually need to get going. I have four more Residents to visit before the end of this day but before I go… tell me one thing. How long have I been gone?

Dr. Jekyll thought about it, and then he answered, Over a month, and I only know that because of my new routine. I stop before noon and have breakfast, and I have done that thirty-five days in a row by myself. Make sure you come tomorrow. Breakfast is better when shared. Dr. Jekyll made a face and then he said, Mr. Hyde wants to inform the both of us that we have forgotten about the bargain we made. He will be the one attending breakfast with you from now on, and at some point, I need to get a blood sample from you.

Oh… right, Kein spoke as she now dreaded coming back tomorrow and facing the madman. I’ll be here. She glanced at the steampunk grandfather clock and exclaimed before she ran off, Is that the time? I better hurry. I don’t have much time left to visit everyone else and see if they have unwelcome guests like Dr. Griffin. Having these unwelcome guests will cause me to have to take longer in each room.

Kein put her other glove back on as she quickly entered the hallway, considering the Invisible Man wasn’t the only guest Basement Level had. She wanted to make sure the rest of her family was safe.

    The vampire's parlor...

Kein burst in, ready for any kind of creature or thing that might attack her, but all she found was Mr. Bayard in the arms of a woman she'd never met before. They were embracing and kissing one another passionately.

Oh... Sorry... Sorry... Sorry... Kein rapidly spoke as she put up her hand to shield her eyes, and then she dashed back into the hallway. She quickly shut the door and then stood holding the doorknob for a long time as if she had forgotten something in the room and needed to go back in. I can't believe I'm doing this, she murmured and then barged back in.

Excuse me, she called out and was ignored. Kein cleared her throat and spoke much louder, Excuse me.

The woman, who was kissing the vampire, turned to her and glared at her as what looked like glowing saliva hung from her mouth and Mr. Bayard’s mouth like some sort of gooey web.

    That’s just nasty, Kein muttered.

The woman questioned her, Who are you and how did you get here? You aren’t one of the residents of Basement Level.

I’m Kein, and my status is… I’m… I won Opening.

A human… I would have selected you if I had known you survived. I heard the one human on Basement Level disappeared about a month ago.

Yeah… well… that’s a long story, Kein spoke, glanced at the vampire, and then asked her, Are you a succubus?

I am, and I am also surprised you would ask me such a thing. You are no ordinary human, are you?

I am a.., Kein began, and then she said, What I am isn’t important. What is important is that I need for you to leave the vampire alive. She looked at the gooey substance that still lingered between the succubus and the vampire’s mouths, and then Kein said, Your feeding saliva has turned clear. You have fed enough. All you are doing now is killing him.

I am taking him to the plains of ecstasy, the succubus told her. The vampire will not complain.

No, but I am, Kein told her. Release him and leave in peace. Dr. Griffin has already left as I had requested of him.

"Dr. Griffin would not leave until Dr. Jekyll
